| Playstation 3 video games are today being developed
by most of the larger game companies. Compared to PC games Playstation
3 games requires more resources and the production costs of some
of the games can be as high as the budget for a big movie production.
In general console games are more expensive to develop than PC games
due to the high standard Sony requires from the developers to protect
the Playstation brand.
Because of the computing power that the Playstation 3 hardware
offers, developers will be able to give the Playstation 3 video
games a level of realism that has never before been seen in games.
(Note : the Xbox 360 and the Nintendo Revolution will also achieve
similar results to the Playstation 3.) Playstation 3 will be able
to simulate real world physics which the developers can integrate
into the gameplay, much like we saw in Half Life 2 to but taken
even a few steps further. Imagine you play a Playstation 3 racing
game, and you hit the wall in 200 Mph. Not only will parts from
you car fly all over the screen, but the Playstation 3 will be able
to simulate how the car will bend just like in a real car crash.
So what will this level of realism do to the concept of video games?
Hopefully we will see games based around new concepts not seen on
the earlier consoles. Many developers will want to use all this
new computing power to create games that not only look better visually,
but that also plays very different from today’s games and
can offer a new gaming experience for the player. Sport games for
example have always opted for realism. This genre will definitely
get a whole new dimension on the Playstation 3. Hopefully developers
will also remember that some of the best games ever made are simple
games based around simple concepts.
