There have been a lot of rumors “flying” around lately suggesting that Sony has redesigned the PS3 controller. The controversial design has been met with quite a bit of scepticism, and I guess with good reason. What was wrong with the good old dual shock? Anyway, according to Famitsu magazine, a Sony corporate executive has now denied rumours that a redesigned PS3 controller would be unveiled at CES, in Las Vegas, in January. The article states that the PS3 controller might undergo "minor changes”, but not a complete redesign.
Maybe they have tried to throw it away but it kept coming back?..h…e…h….e….Now if that astounding joke doesn't win me the “lamest blog joke of the year” prize I will be mighty disappointed.  Add Comment  1 -

Sure we're used to the dual shock, but some 3rd party vendor will make a knock off dual shock if you really have to have one. Let's applaud sony for trying something new. 2 -

Havoc 11.17.2005 15:00 When they say minor changes they should make the handles shorter, and do something about the shoulder buttons, put them more to the side and make it more broader not rounder. It looks like if you have small hands, you wouldn't be able to reach the shoulder buttons. 5 -

I've gotten very used to the PS1 and PS2 controllers, so I like the familiarity of the button selection. I also think they have improved the design to be more comfortable and the wireless will be a nice touch. I hate seeing the cords strung out all over the floor. I think the negatism toward the controller is unjust and uncalled for. It looks like a cool design, I just hope the button in the middle is for turning on and off the PS3. It sucks having to get up and turn the console on or off. The vocal minority have made the controller seem awful, but it looks promising to me. 7 -

PS3--Seems like it would slip from your hands, no triggers, smaller shoulder buttons which should be better, I don't know how big this controller is but I hope you won't have trouble reaching in. In my opinion they should of stuck closer to the original format. Xbox 360--Already declared from many famous game informers/G4TV/Attack of the Show to be the greatest controller by far, very light, triggers and 2 shoulders, all around very comfy. And that's not coming from my experience but from reviews so don't think I'm being a fanboy. Overall once PS3 starts letting people touch and review the controller I believe that it will clearly be #2 and probably stay there. It's OK, this is only the controller But this is two down for Sony 1. No Online -(don't even mention crappy self made servers or porting) 2. Second Best controller 16 -

Medaitor 11.17.2005 16:54 Controller prefrence is a matter of opinion. I personally don't really like the feel of the new xbox controller (don't get me wrong it's 10 times better than the old one). I am dissapointed that they are not compleatly redoing the ps3 controller because I wanted something totaly new. Considering many people (myself included) can go from a mouse and keybord to a gamepad I think people can get used to a slighly longer and more rounded ps2 controller. 18 -

For Sony to NOT change the design does show me that they are willing to 'try something new' or are being innovative ... it shows that they are a hardheaded company that indeed does not listen to its fans. For all we know it could well be the most comfortable controller ever made, It has no 'corners' as such which could well make for a very easy hold, not stressing out your hands and allowing for smooth gameplay. Because you've already given a joystick a name-the boomerang. How many other companies have a name for a joystick? The insults have actually promoted the joystick, because people have JUDGED a controller based SOLELY on pictures because they think it looks funny. I, on the hand, think it has alot of promise. I prefer the layout to stay consistent so I don't have to start over after 10 years of a ceratin layout. The new design looks sleek and like earlier, I'm stoked about the bluetooth wireless controllers. The joystick looks like it could be alot more comfortable. To be fair, there are some concerns. How big is the controller? How will the angled D-Pad layout actually play? Will it be comfortable? And will the wireless remote actually respond on time? Trying not to be judgemental before actually USING the joystick. BTW, cool site. I love all the PS3 news. 31 -

Patrick 11.17.2005 18:55 Good, I like the look of this new controller, looks sleek and well made, looks like the top left and right buttoms will be very comfortable since it conforms to the natural curve your fingers have when relaxed. Make all the fun you want but I think its very nice, I have an older computer control by logitech called the Wingman and its shapped just like this. Its very comfortable and nice to use, it even has the long handles. Oh and I threw it once,... didnt come back. Didnt break either, thank goodness. Dont throw your xbox controller though, not only will it also not come back, but it will either break into several pieces or just get mad, curse at you and make something up about Sony. Go PS3 34 -
to comment 22Havoc 11.17.2005 19:12 Did kojima actually say that the Xbox 360 can easily handle any PS3 game, when he said that he could of did mgs4 for the 360 he is saying that he could of chose to do it for the 360, but he chose to do it for the ps3 because everybody else at konami is doing 360 titles right know and the ps3 will be the new system. That demo can probably run on the 360 but he didn't say anything about consoles being equal, or 360 can do anything the ps3 can do, he just said he could of chose to do mgs4 for the 360. If kojima doesn't push the ps3 to the limits with mgs4 and he probably won't because it's his first ps3 title, then the full mgs4 game could probably run on 360 If it can't than that would be a shame. It doesn't matter anyway it's not going to be on the 360. 35 -

PC fans stop trying, why are you on a console site if all you want to do is click the mouse and press on the keyboard. Console games specifically push and match that system, don't compare specs because it doesn't matter on the level of ps3, xbox 360, and pc. 38 -

As far as the 360 being able to support ps3 games, the hardwear developed for the ps3 is brand new, of course the game developers are going to hold back on trying to utilize it's full potential without knowing how far they can push it. after it has been out for a while and game studios are more familiar with it, then the games will start using the full extent of the hardware. that is the point where the 360 will most likely not be able to handle ps3 games even "in theory" unless MS desides to make some kind of add on for the 360, which they most likely will do since the 360 is pretty much just a gaming PC in a box. whatever 360 fans can enjoy their halo. 40 -

PAUL CERULA 11.18.2005 00:17 I know what Sony did, they basically thought that by picking a 3d shape and plopping a few buttons on it would somehow be much better than what they have. This is worse than gamecubes idea of just randomly throwing buttons down on a peice of paper and making a controller with that layout. Yeah these are harsh and fictional comments but you get what I mean. Nintendo thought by radically changing their design they would jump start a stagnant console, but I doubt that the REV. will outsell the Gamecube, just come close. And according to the pres. of Nin. they would abandone the console if so. By the time it comes out both other consoles will be cheaper. In the end imagine yourself with this ps3 controller, do you think it will grip or rest into your hand and not slip. It's a freaking smooth surface all around. The buttons look generic, yeah it doesn't matter, but you can't deny the fact that sony's dualshock had less quality than MS-S controller. That dual shock just felt like...well, a cheap peice of a japanese toy. That's what sony did after WW2, was resupply incredible amounts of very junky and cheap toys to the U.S.. And we agreed cause we bombed them. I'm not saying that it will perform less, or it reflects the ps3 consoles performance. Just that it this doesn't look comfortable, reasonable, formidable to your hand, or not cheap. This is it folks, you ps3 fanboys will have to get used to this thing so naturally your going to ignore all unpartisan and reasonable approaches to all Sony's products. 45 -

Anyway, they've got the super awesome systems, the great games, great processors and graphics cards, everything. But why do they need to make such huge changes to their controllers?! Nintendo is just out of their minds with their controller. Microsoft has a wacky controller (I've held it, and played the Call of duty 2 demo with it.) but its probably the best of the three, and Sony has just...gone over the top. Its like an N64 controller without the third leg/handle thing. It looks incredibly painful, annoying, and not that great. You know how to turn you need the right analog stick, and to walk and stuff you need the left? Well, it was always easy to walk with the left analog stick, shoot with R1, put your finger on whatever button you needed to press at the time and keep it their while moving the right analog stick with the end of your thumb (Or at least thats how I did it. Like, spin and aim with your thumb on the right analog stick, and press the buttons. Hard to explain, but you know what I'm talking about.) and play like normal. But look at this things design. You'll have to bend your thumb in horrible ways to reach the right analog stick, and if you need to spin and throw a grenade with say, square, you're dead. Its going to be /hard/ to do multitasking like that with this things desingn. 49 -

If you can imagine holding it for a second, I predict it would be quite comfortable and easy to operate. It is not as prominent as the PS2 controller, in that the all the buttons look smooth, less conspicuous and the whole 'joystick' is generally all flat. It may be the angle but the analog sticks look smaller too. I'm sure the designers have carried out numerous tests on practicality/flexibility and design and that they a good idea of what they're doing. 54 -

My opinionMathoss 11.18.2005 09:23 I thinks it is ugly as hell... I really dont like what it looks like... Silver boomerang looks unfinished. BUT Ergonomically speaking is seems pretty good. For thoses who are wondering want the 2 long end is all about: it is to fit to different size of hand. Personnaly with dualshock I was always wishing for an extra inch on the 2 ends. As stated by someone before it looks like one of the wingman controllers that, I must say, was pretty confortable. Just dont judge appearence and wait until you have tryed it for a couple of hours. And remember you are suppose to look at the screen when you play not at your controler, so who cares if it is ugly as long as it is comfortable. 57 -

If you have you would notice how small the space is to fit your hands, that because of smaller hands that asins have so if this controller is supposed to be for them first and us second then what makes you think people with smaller hands would make something to big to use? I currently own all three current gen systems. When the PS2 it came out was the shizz and still is in a lot of ways. The gamecube pissed me off, because the controller sucked compared to the N64 and they never came out with plenty of good games (there were a few; zelda, RE's, metroid). The XBOX really introduced me to what a great system and great SERVICE is all about. The games and controller struggled at the beginning, but once they got the hang of it and introduced LIVE, then that is when my allegiance went to them. TRUST ME...I wan't to be impressed by the PS3 and Revolution, but everything I've seen so far has been depressing, with the exception of a couple of amazing cut-scene footage. 90 -

The handles are long and more spread out than the PS3 controller and the wingman itself as you can see is bigger, but I have one and its very comfortable to hold, the handles look to long but the ends barely stick out from your grip. There are 2 buttons on the top of the wingman but are cut into the back at about the same place the left and right buttons for the PS3 controller are at, so if you cut the wingmans top into a curve it would place those buttons at about the same place as the PS3 buttons. Also to the idiots who say it will fall out of your grip you must be really weak. First console I owned was a ps2, i fell into the fad 3. I switched to xbox because ps2 and the controller were cheap plastic and wouldn't work occassionally. Also the titles I wanted like the GTA's, halo, and many others were on the xbox. AND OF COURSE LIVE. 2. Yes I have complimented the ps3 but not much because they've given nothing but stats and animated videos of what they expect the ps3 to reach by then. 3. I'm still unsure about what game(1 or 2) to get...probably pdz or cod2 4. Sony's controller is not next gen, all they did was pick a 3d shape and put the same button format on it. They didn't enhance a much needed dual shock with triggers, new buttons, or dare I say comfort. You don't have to hold to know that grabbing a smooth circular surface doesn't grip into your hand. Maybe if it was more "U" shaped rather than banana. 5. I chose the xbox 360 for its very close performance(NOT AN ISSUE), games, and LIVE. Everything else is insignificant, don't buy the ps3 just because you had its predicessors. 5. My opinions are VERY RARELY responded to with evidence, intelligence, and basically anything more than a brainless spout of frustration from a ps3 sheep. It's a given I will buy the PS3 at launch can't wait! Time to get to the point, the 360 launch is turning into a disaster... The MS hype is at an all time high as expected, but I'm sure someone in the marketing department is going to get canned before the end of the year. I believe the Chief Marketing Officer for Xbox was the same head of marketing for Sega during the Dreamcast fiasco. First, Microsoft decides to give the first playable demos to Walmart and the console settings are not configured properly for display resulting in poor visual quality in some cases looking worse than XBox games. Last time I checked hardcore gamers don't shop at Walmart, it would have made more sense to have the demos at game retailers who would have ensured the console was displayed properly and further hyped the console. Second, the price point for the 360 is off you want this console to be household friendly, but it's priced at $399 for the premium price point. I did not mention the core package, because you don't get backward compatibility so when little Billy get's his core system for Christmas; he will get the core system, because his parents won't know to buy the version with the HARD DRIVE! As a result little Billy's Christmas will be ruined (no Halo 2 at 720P). Plus, what the fuk $40 bucks for a second wired controller, I thought rape was illegal in all 50 states! Now that leads me to the console shortage my EB games is only getting 12 consoles at launch now that's pathetic so all the hard core gamers who reserved consoles months ago bend over, because your not getting your launch console, go to Curcuit city and stand in line with the masses and by the way they may get 60 consoles per store! Now let's talk about the launch titles overall the launch is not bad a nice variety of games, but no real "next-gen" killer launch title like Halo 3. I think the only title built from the ground up for the 360 is Project Gotham racing. All the other tiles are on current consoles or PC. Since MS is hyping the term "next-gen", expectations are high and the casual gamer will not see the jump from the current AAA titles and the 360 launch titles. Honestly, MS could have waited to the spring of 06 to release and had a strong line-up for launch really showcasing next-gen. The PS3 is not launching in the US until winter 06 (if you think it's coming any earlier you're on crack)This would have given them a 6 month headstart to gain market share. If MS did not have unbelievable amounts of cash to burn I would think this could be another Dreamcast, but since they already lost 4 BILLION bucks this current gen they will not jump out of the next-gen early, too much to lose... Hopefully the 360 will be successful we need them to keep Sony honest, but this is a hell of a start. Both will be good, comfortable and great to play with. Some will poke fun at the boomerang, banana or whatever name they come up with for the PS3 controller. If the controller was designed for the XBox360 the same twits would rave about the "revolutionary design" and claim that it would be the best thing since sliced bread. That is just how people reason. The controller looks like sh*te because it is the XBox controller and I dont like the Xbox, or it looks sh*te because it is the PS3 controller and I dont like Sony. But in my opinion - there is not much to choose between PS3 and the XBox360 controller. The one that fascinates me is the Revolution controller. I'm not trying to be insulting, but most Walmart employees are not too tech savy and do not have the same level of enthusiasm as game retailers. I called my Walmart and the guy in the electronics section sounded confused when I asked if they had a 360 demo. I guess he had never heard of the 360, LMAO. I decided to go to Walmart and see for myself and the store had a kiosk that was configured incorrectly and I tried to explain to the store clerk and was told the MS rep would have to come fix it... Also, the price point for the 360 is not appealing for the masses. We are currently in hard economic times and most parents and casual gamers are not prepard to pay $299 or $399 for a piece of electronics unless they are blown away by performance. I would say 1 or 2 of the launch titles have the quality to really impress the casual gamer, but you really do need a High Def TV to appreciate the 360 graphics. Madden got some bad reviews, 7.4 out of 10, and the graphics got a 8. How lame is that. Also, Call of Duty 2 review says, it looks just as good as the high end PC version of it. Thats not next-gen. NBA 2K6 looks okay too, but the reviews said, the players look like porcelin. Now its up to Sony to take us to the next-gen. I hope they can deliver on their promise. 162 -

Realtime isn't CGI this is good definition: An event in a game that occurs right when it is happening. Nearly everything in all games occurs in real time, except for the CG or FMV sequences. Many people debate whether Metal Gear Solid 2's cut scenes occur in real time or not. Since the graphics need to be calculated by the PS2's CPU, the cut scenes are indeed real-time. If it were FMV, than all the PS2 would have to do is stream the movie from the disc, rather create it from scratch. If you Xbox fanboys want to pretend like you always do that having a good controller and a online service is going to give the xbox 360 an advantage then you haven't learned a single thing about video games. I plan to buy the 360 and the Ps3 but if Ms doesn't do anything to impress me the consumer with great games, I'm not going to be too happy with what they have in store if this continues like this next year. 171 -

OMG!!!!! and i'm not making this up either... u can read this for urself on both 1up.com and Gamespot.com Cutomers are reporting that there systems was going through bouts of freezes, malfunctioning and spontaneous turn offs and restarts during play of PGR3, PDZ, Call of Duty, King Kong and Condemded :CO, and in some cases a few games were unplayable because the machine hard drive wouldn't work. And this is for real, the proof is written all over the system...why wouldn't it come as no surprise that this would happen? after all they rushed this system on the market... it's been released up to 6 month ahead of both Sony and nintendo, clearly they had the option to wait and release the system around the time of next year summer or even spring, heck maybe even fall, so they can run proper test on the system and maybe solve what ever bugs the system might have, and perhaps then the system would "truely be Next Gen" as they hype us all up. u can rest assure that u wont find this problem with nieter Nintendo or Sony, all three companies started there Next Gen system development around the same time but one had to rush... and look what that cause... thats why the cliche' says "slow and steady wins the race" i guess MS wasn't payin attention to the "Rabbit and the turtle" right now this isn't looking good for MS because hearing this is really giving potential coustomers who already had doubt about the system like my self to not bother them self with it... if MS doesn't pull a rabbit out of the hat or have a serious miracle they are gonna have to pull back their what's already begining to look like a "failiure" of a system and become 3rd party developers for both nintendo and sony... because it really is looking like either Sony or Nintendo will cast away MS's Dream like Dreamcast and be on top this round in the Next gen Console wars end transmission>>.... 190 -

X360 SucksUnregistered - DjC4 11.26.2005 16:06 I am a video game tester for a major video game company. i have been on 2 X60 launch titles. The controllers ARE comfy BUT! the joysticks break FAST. VERY fast first the get this weird litty fibers cause of the 4 grip dots ont hem. then they start to wear down. within a month-two months of solid gaming one of the dots will rip off and it will start to fall apart. it's totaly unacceptable, i highly recomnd waiting till 3rd party clones come out. 192 -

MS isn't even going to do a recall for all the systems that have bugs so those unlucky ones who have the system with bugs cant do enjoy their console to it's fullest untill this launch hype is done and over with... and in regards to the PS2 having bugs i dont recall really here much of any bugs in the system from what i've read the system played like it was soppose to, and it was the same for the Gamecube and the same with the original xbox so u really arent saying much... as far as shortages go for the PS2 it wasn't even 10 percent as bad as this, at least video game distributer and local stores got a decent amount of consoles (200-300) so they can properly satisfy there consumers on launch day even though the system got sound out in many retailers on the first couple of days it just means sony was doing agood job with it's marketing scheme... as did nintendo and even the first xbox. so ur not justifying ur claim really... Now some may say that this is an almost "suicidal Feat" while others may say it's what sony has been doing ever since it first came out with its PS1 --> make products that revolutionize the gaming industry. Of course, a major downside to judging things by abstract images online is that many products can look completely different if the photo is taken from the wrong angle or with no contrast. This is why I have gone out of my way to find as many different images of the ps3 controller as I can. I agree with most who say if you have small hands you wont even be able to reach the shoulder buttons. ?Unregistered - jay 04.12.2006 18:11 I was wondering about the wireless controller, because the ps2 wireless controller the buttons would stick alot. Everyone loves to pick up the wireless and play from a distance, but after a while they ask for the originals everytime different people, times, and places this seems to always happen. So I hope that the new remote control buttons dont stick and with the shape change, I hope the R2 and L2 buttons are not lower on the controller pad and keep it like the original ps and ps2 remote. Also make it shorter whats neccessary about the longness? unless extra chips and etc are needed in it to work with the better grpahics or whatever. thanx peace Add Comment |
