A story is making its way around cyberspace today at lighting speed, with the worrying message that Sony is planning to prevent people from playing pre-owned games on their PS3. The source of this rumor is a patent document that Sony holds on a technology which can prevent games from being played on any other machine than the game first was played on. "A device and method for protection of legitimate software against used software and counterfeit software in recording media. The device includes a disk is set in a main unit. A specific title code is read, and if this title code has been registered, the main unit shifts to a normal operation. If the code has not been registered, verification software is initiated, PG detection is performed, and when a PG pattern and verification data match, the code is registered in the COCT. If matching does not occur, the disk is processed as illegitimate software." It was adressed by epics Mark Rein that Blueway could also force people to buy copyprotected telivisons to play blue ray stuff. Lets look at the facts.. 1.) Piracy takes away from Sony's profits. If this software prevents copies of games being made or played on the PS3 then will be willing to try it, if the used market suffers from it...so be it. 2.) Sony does not make any profit from the sale of used games, only new sales. When retailers buy new games they buy them from the manufacturers..ie..sony, microsoft, namco..etc. Used games are purchased from the consumer, and then resold from the store. Imagine how much more money Sony would make if everyone had to buy NEW PS3 games and accessories? 3.) Finally trade-in/used game sales are not allowed in Japan. This is one of the reasons Famitsu is so popular and respected. Once you buy a game in japan you are stuck with it, so people look to Famitsu's reviews so that they don't buy something that completely sucks. This system has been in place for a long time and japanese gamers still support them, why not make it mandatory for ps3? Hurray for Blu-Ray huh? Like I said this more than likely is not gonna happen, but it is a very real possibility. Unless PS3's are all connected to each other at all times via some wireless connection that spans the globe I would say the easy thing to do would be don't connect your PS3 to the net. Unless there is some mandatory registration thing that sony has built into the "all-powerful" cell processor. Probably won't happen..but it could happen. 7 -

Hey, did you guys know that, sony is soliciting logitech to come up with a design for the ps3 controller? Now I really like the 360's controller and it's also made by logitech if im not mistaken. Sony knows that the concept design didn't go over well. But i'm thinking, why logitech? That means sony must have really liked what logitech has done with the 360 controller. They sell games, DVD's CD's etc. The real reason there is no real market for trade in is the aggressive nature of discounting over there. Buy any game on launch day and expect to pay full price. I say that because they needed to give the software developers time to make the games and get used to the equipment. I will never buy a first gen system, they are always too buggy. there is no point in saying 360 is better than PS3 because no one knows yet, nor is there a point in saying the PS3 is going to waylay the 360, as much as I would like it it is doubtful, sony is hurting, and hurting bad... they are looking at things all wrong they think their rights are being abused and so they are taking some drastic measures in the whole DRM front, if they would focus more on content instead of how to protect their content they wouldn't be hurting as bad. any-hoo I hope sony does come out on top just because I hate M$. TruthUnregistered - sony sucks 11.13.2005 03:54 I've seen and played the 360 as well and I loved it, no the demos arent good at all but it doesnt take away from the system cause the games will get better soon enough. Those demos pretty much sucked, but the 360 is still great. Sony is trash rehashed titles no thanks. Ms definitely could have done better with the demo disks. But it's still more than what sony is offering. These people have soooo much faith in the ps3 considering the ps3 does not exist it's in development and the specs could and would change and not really for the better, and yes they are having major whoas with the cell processor and it may not run the numbers like they wanted, the 360 is up and running at the specs announced. On top of that the ps3 maybe dalayed 07 or 08 who the hell will wait that long just because it says sony certainly not me. Nov 22, 2005 people will be enjoying thier systems and Dec 25, 2005 alot of people will recieve them as gifts. By the time spring 06 comes the game support and quality would start to pick up and people will be online and its just a beautiful thing, and you will still be on this site comparing specs, and looking at mgs4 movies, how lame, thats dumb retarded. By the time the ps3 does launch if it ever launches, the 360 would have had a price drop or two which would make it even more attractive, come on now use your brains no one give a f*ck about sony. You read your psm magazines and let that stuff into your minds and you believe it when in reality its all marketing, case and point. I was reading in the psm magazine about some game show some months back, they showed a asian woman sitting in an area designated for the xbox 360 with a controller in her hand looking into the camera, and behind her were like 4 people around a monitor or something, and the caption read sony's ps3 was the life of the party even tho sony only displayed movies and no real game footage, now im thinking how is that the life of the party, to be honest the lady in the pic probably was asked to take that pic before the party started it just didnt look right, you have a fully functional system and hi def tv, with no one playing and 4 people in the back alledgly look at sony footage, total bs. Now, I was watching G4 (I know... I have no idea why) and a developer was on with the crew of G4 and talking about the next generation of consoles. He went on about how good the 360 is to develop for and bla bla bla... then the guy asked if he thinks the PS3 will be a better machine. This is the funny part. He avoided the question... saying that the PS3 has extra time and will have stronger technology... but the 360 is a fine machine. This makes it obvious that he wants to sell his games now and did not want to sway anyone into not buying a 360. However, he could not say that the 360 was just as powerful or comment on how much better the PS3 will be. It was kinda like going to buy a computer and you say to the sales guy: "isn't a new processor comming out that is twice as fast next week" and the sales guy says...
