The Official Playstation Magazine reported that Sony has decided not to use a central online gaming service like Xbox Live for the PS3. Instead the PS3 online service will be similar to what we have today on the PS2.
This will come as bad news for many who had hoped for a unified system similar to Microsoft’s Xbox Live, which are one of the main selling points for the new Xbox 360. This means that gamers still have to keep track of multiple online accounts, and that it will be up to each and every publisher to decide what kind of online features their games will have. Though this gives the publisher more freedom, and could be an advantage for some games, many of us have been hoping for a unified online service for the PS3 and it can be somewhat hard to understand Sony’s decision, especially after Nintendo finally also have shown interest for online gaming. However, how this strategy will work out for Sony will first be known when the console is out, and it could prove to be less of a problem than many of us think. Add Comment  1 -

I personally canceled my live service as I liked the PS2 online games better. This also allows for better servers being used when companys upgrade for thier games. I for one was not looking forward to a monthly subscription to play the few games I do online. Don't forget that only 10% of the people that have XBOXs have xbox live accounts. I think this leaves sony in a good position that they can always impliment the online community at any time through a download or even a better more transparent system through the harddrive with Linux installed. 3 -

Unregistered - Indica 11.04.2005 10:25 first of all i cant stand ps2 online games there is too much lag and i use cable so its not that... live is flawless... i had my xbox when it first come out and my live was free even when they started charging... i myself wouldnt mind playing flawless games online for a small fee plus they have the silver accounts now too.... that 10% is bull crap i know alot of people who have live just not highspeed and use others connections and vise versa.... you can make the best of this news all you want by saying its free and it wont lag but i for a fact know if they dont improve nothing between the ps2 and ps3 online then noting will change it will still suck 6 -

This is a shock to me, I even looked up the source, it's from a site called gamesfirst.com and they said they've reported this from Official Playstation Magazine that sony has decided not to use a centralized online plan. I know I am a sony fan boy but it is hard for me to believe this, I want to see quotes from the artical. I want to read the whole artical so I can know exactly why sony would choose this decision. But I started to think, It would be very nice to have a unified online stratagy but sony still can have one without it. Besides having to register for every game to play online, the online play can still be good, the things ps2 needed for online play was a headset that worked for all games and a harddrive for downloadable content. Then it will be up to the deveopers to incoporate the abilty to find friends, stats, and download content and things like that. If sony does decide to go by this stratagy, they should really think it over because although ps3 online will be so much better than ps2 online, it won't compete with xbox live with the single gamertag across all games. I still can't beilive sony would not go with the unified online plan, but just give me a headset to talk, and some downloadable content and I'm good. I just feel that if sony Made a strong centralized online sevice that the ps3 would compete with 360 in every category. Because with the ps2 and xbox, xbox fanboys could brag about the graphics in games, and xbox live but if ps3 will have a unified online service the xbox fanboys will have nothing to brag about with the 360. The live servers maintained monitored and optimized to create the best online gaming experience possible on a console. With all the new enhancements to the service it will be even better on 360. $50.00 a year(not per month) is the cost of one game (not even one game now..darn next-gen price inflation). Cheating isn't nearly as rampant (any ever played Socom online?), Voice chat with every game, The games you can't play online have downloadable content (for the most part). Its a great service. With PS2 online...servers are almost always lagging, cheating is the norm, hardly any voice chat and only a handful of games support ps2online and even fewer of them are worth playing online. For both PS3 and X360 you will have to pay a fee for MMORPG's (unless msoft hooks us gamers up..since we are already paying) because that's how they have always been. PS2 online I believe I had it for a week before I sold my network adapter and play all my online games through xbox live exclusively. PS2's network was hot doo-doo..unfortunately it looks like PS3's is poised to be NEXT-GEN ultra powerful HOT DOO-DOO. Oh well there is always xbox live. I do want to play that DC comics MMORPG on PS3 though. As well as the Marvel MMORPG for x360. 33 -

It seems every time one of the systems have a disadvantage all the fans rabidly defend the systems fault. Such as the 360 not supporting Blu Ray or HD-DVD clearly a disadvantage, but xbots will die telling you there is no advantage to having extra disc space, which is an idiotic thing to say. "I believe that KK is playing everyone to be a fool, here's why: PS3 will not be expensive: Kaz Hirai and Chatani said it would be 'competitive'), and I believe them over KK ("PS2 will be under $900"). When he said PS3 would be expensive he was laughing. They also told investors and partners that it will be less than 40 000yen ($368). Why will RSX cost more than R500? If anything it should be cheaper: no eDRAM, fixed royalties, no radical architecture (as yet....). Also the R500 is made up of two dies. Cell $6billion dev costs (including fabs) are split 3 ways to IBM Toshiba and Sony, HAVABlogbillion for Sony, thats $20 per cell, fixed dev costs (assuming 100 million cells made and sold, used just on PS3, not including PS4, TVs, PSP2, mobile phones etc). XeCPU will cost a similar amount to make as cell, because die sizes are not hugely different, extra transistors is not the defining factor in manufacturing costs, die size is. Plus Sony is one, if not the most experienced company in 90nm production (pioneered this production method more than 6 years ago with PS2), an area which MS and ATI have almost no experience in (the same goes for nVidia, which is the reason why they are using Sony's 90nm production method for the RSX). Another thing is that only 7 of the PS3 Cell's 8 SPEs are activated, meaning that if one SPE is malfunctioning Sony won't have to discard the CPU but just deactivate the malfunctioning SPE, unlike MS who will have to discharge their CPUs if just one of the PPC cores are malfunctioning. A wifi card costs $40 now, to a consumer, how much for Sony, at manufacturing costs? Less than half? Bluetooth is 2.4GHz tech, the same as the 360's system and will most likely be the same price to manufacture as X360 solution. Sony do not have to pay Ericsson (the creators of Bluetooth) royalties, as Sony own Ericsson, MS will have to Logitech. Blu-Ray is the only real cost and will not be $100 more, all it is is a violet laser as well as a red laser, there will be no huge change in manufacturing costs. Stand alone players will be a $1000, just like DVD players were when PS2 came out, and how much was PS2 at launch ($300). Another important thing is that Sony isn't alone in the BD R&D, all the biggest hardware companies (minus Toshiba) are sharing the R&D cost and experience in gaining the most cost-efficient production method. When the PS3 hits the shelves the production cost of BD drives will be much less than today and the money lost on the PS3 drives will be compensated by the gain from selling BD movies and 1080p TVs (HD-DVD only run 720p resolution meaning that Sony wouldn't be able to sell its 1080p TVs to people with HD-DVD players). Another important medium which needs mentioning is the memory-stick, the PS3 will make this medium much more common which will make more people buy Sony's memory-stick products like video-cams, car phones, MP3 players and so on. I cannot see what all the doom and gloom stories are based upon. If someone can point out where I am wrong with logic rather than speculation, please do. Please do not use analysts ideas, they do not know squat, (PS2 and PSP=$500 at launch)." The controller and the console were only concept designs plus that guy carmack was talking about the old tools, the new tools arrived in october, and the unreal Engine and game Embryo 2.1 is going to make game development easier. This announcement may not be legit, because I'm sure Sony understands online gaming is going to be a huge part of nextgen gaming. I'm just tired of hearing people say PS2 does not have online games. Don't get me wrong the XBox service is more robust and the XBox had more online enabled games, but the PS2 offered online options with most of their sports titles and Socom 1-3 had a huge online community with headset support. Honestly, I don't like the idea of having to pay for online services, but I do like downloadable game content. Also, having a universal friends list is nice, but not absolutely neccessary. If Sony pushes the developers to enable online gaming with their titles and offer downloadable content via the hard drive for free we have no real worries. I think the XB360 online strategy is nice, but not a system seller I can do all of the extra features via my PC. In conclusion I just played the 360 demo on a HD display and was impressed, but not floored by the visuals. I think both consoles have a bright future, but the PS3 is without a doubt nextgen and I highly doubt they completely ignore online play. Peace. 120 -
