Merrill Lynch has released a new breakdown of next generation hardware component costs suggesting that Xbox 360 could be selling at half the price of PS3 in the latter half of 2006.The report includes estimated breakdown of hardware costs by component and shipping predictions. Manufacturing costs has been the main factor. Here are some quotes from the report. "…The PS3 will not only be significantly more costly than Xbox 360 at launch, but will continue to operate at a cost disadvantage for several years. … We think that the Xbox 360 could be selling at half the price of PS3 in the latter half of 2006." "…Our analysis indicates that Microsoft has a significant advantage in terms of cost. Taking Sony's weakened financial condition and Microsoft's deep pockets into consideration, we conclude that Microsoft's Xbox 360 should emerge as the early winner in the next round of the game console wars." "Competitive pricing [for Microsoft] could hurt margins for Microsoft in the near term, but we think that Microsoft has the potential to exit 2006 with an installed base of 10 million units, with all that implies for more profitable software sales for 2007." It mostly comes down to what type of games you like. If you like tried and true 1st person shooters I would suggest the Xbox 360. If you like stealth games I would go with the PS3. Do some reserch to find out which systems seem to favor the genre that intrests you. Also if online is everything to you the xbox 360 has a great service (for a monthly fee) and would probably be the best chioce but i would wait until sony reveals more about the online service for the PS3. Finally asking "PLEASE HELP WITH OPINIONS" is asking for a flame war. 6 -

Unoriginal and cheap hardware always depreciates in value very quickly. Every year the 360 will be due for a price drop. This has always been Microsoft’s strategy, to capture as much of the market very quickly. That's why the system has nothing new to offer. Opinions....Retard 11.03.2005 18:46 Either way you look at this... Someone is liable to attack my opinion on this... Xbox360 is a decent machine, nothing against them; Only thing questionable is the future proofness of it--be fully determined... Triple-Core processing is semi-top notch, only thing keeping it from the top is because this has been done before many times; so it isn't exactly revolutionary. Mircosoft in a way is playing it safe by giving most standards- i.e. DVD format, standard wireless, Hard drive, ATi's Custom chip (AKA R520 which is the PC version), Xbox Live setup (BLADE).. which is all good and everything. Sony on the other hand seems to be trying to evade less typical hardware with Blu-Ray, BlueTooth, Gigabyte connection, RSX (G70 Tech w/SLi like traits), and well Ultrasharp 1080p (which is amazing since there are only a handful of TV's with that capiblity), Some Sorta online plans (vauge details),and what seems to be a semi-full backwards capiblity--i think if i'm getting PS3, I'm going to play PS3 games... But He11! these are only opinions ... None of this is hardcore facts... and i'm sure all the systems will pull through (the systems arn't out yet to determine anything!) *One thing though, i saw the sadest thing the other day. I heard something about an Xbox 360 on eBay; i checked it out sure thing there are Xbox's there. 4 hours left with 80+ bids it was at ID="MainNewsBlogCom",644.. I think a better comparison would be if X360 is a mustang then ps3 would be a mustang cobra. Cobra has more power than a regular mustang and is more expensive while a mustang has decent power and is more pocketbook friendly. This whole yugo thing is bias fanboy talk at its best. The truth of matter is that both consoles will be great. Both will have great graphics, both will have great games. True msoft has built the 360 with the idea of keeping costs down, most console developers do. Sony's mission with ps3 isn't to sell games, they want to sell TV's and sound systems. They have never been shy in stating this. So they want their Cell to be in their TV's, DVD players, Stereos..etc. They decided to go more expensive, more power to them. Looking at all the things they plan to incorporate cell in...the cell doesn't look like that big of an expense. Hopefully since sony put all this money in they will build the ps3 a little better than PS2, cuz PS2 were crap as far as their manufacturing. The only reason sony sold 30 million plus ps2's is because they break or stop reading dvd-rom games or blue-disc games or dvd movies. My DVD players konked in, and the PS2 now plays DVD's better than most DVD players out there. We have not even begin to see what overheating issues and crap will hit the first wave of 360's. The PS2's will drop in price, be bundled with a couple of nice titles - which will make a good buy this season. I will wait for the 360 / PS3 / Revo to be out before getting a next gen system - although I am leaning towards the PS3 to get a cheap Blu-Ray player and a Revo for the innovative controller. As for the 360 to be half the price, well, then why are you buying a 360 now? If you want one, just wait a couple of months for the first glitches to sort itself out and get one for half price when the PS3 launch. Getting one now, when it seems that MS is rushing it out to get the "first mover" advantage is a bit of a risk. If you are sold on the 360 - just hold on to your bucks for a couple of months until the price drops and the graphic card overheating is confirmed to not be a problem. Unregistered - Silverback 11.08.2005 10:49 In answer to your question about which to get and then reading the following responses it is clear that most of them are ignorant and/or heavily biased towards Sony, not entirely unpredictable since this is a fanboy site. Anyways, just a few thoughts for you: (1) every independant, qualified analyst that I have read has indicated that the two systems raw ability to render games is so close that it is essentially a non issue when desiding whether one system has better hardware than the other; (2) the PS2's advantage in a larger number of games with more variety will largely be negated this time around as the 360 has a huge amount of Japanese dev support and it will be launching first which means that by the time the PS3 is released in North American and Europe there most likely will be at least 100 games available with plenty more to come. All the other peripheral claims by both consoles regarding iPod hook ups etc are probably going come for both systems so they are a non issues. And anyone who tells you that you have to get the PS3 because it supports 1080p is just kidding themselves unless they are planning on buying a television that is cutting edge technology that isn't even on the market yet and will be very expensive. The 360 supports all the currentl hd formats and unlike the PS3 it is maditory that the devs support at lest 720p for every game. So really as far as I can see it there are really only two things that make either console stand out: (1) the PS3 will offer Blue Ray hd dvd and, (2) the xbox 360 offers far and away the best live experience. I for one am not buying a gaming machine for its dvd player but for the experience that comes with the features available and the games it offers. For me Blue Ray is simply a convenience, I won't have to get up and change dvds since most games will probably be released on the 360 on multiple discs. But in truth who really cares? No one plays a game all the way through in one sitting and so having to get up once or twice in 10-20+ hour experience is no big deal. For me MS's live experience and the community it is creating has way more benifits than a dvd format and so if I had to chose one console I would go for the Xbox 360. Fortunately that won't happen and I will buy all the consoles for this next generation. So since at this point we really can't tell any clear difference between the systems, please fanboys don't tell me that the PS3 will be this or that for sure since non of us really know at this point, you will just have to wait and go with the one that gives you the experience you want, ie games and what kind of live experience you want. 110 -

I waited in line @ Walmart from 3'oclock in the afternoon until midnight to get the sold-out-everywhere PS2. After waiting for all that time I get it home, open her up and I find a nice sized gash in the bottom of my system. 300 F****** dollars pissed down the drain! I can't take it back, there are none to exchange it for and I don't want to wait until after xmas to get a new one right. So I keep it and 4 months later this hoopty piece of shizzle craps out on me. Sony has some of the worst quality control of all time. That's why their stock has taken such a hit and their products have diminished in quality. I will wait to get a PS3 until all the 1st gen bugs are worked out. Sony needs their launch more than M$FT does. 2. Bought an Xbox and after 3 weeks of play the drive just stopped. Luckily I bought it from a game crazy and got the warranty for it. I can't believe these billion dollar corporations can get away with selling shoddy wares. The consumer needs to stand up for themself and let these a**h**l* smiley glad hands get their s**t together. So it's not just M$FT pal its all of em and Sony is more guilty than most others. who caresUnregistered - Kell 11.13.2005 19:44 not sure if this thread is still alive but im bored so i'll post. id like to think im fairly impartial but... lets look at some facts. sony have been in the console marekt since 94, have secured (through both fair and foul play) some of the best games developers around, have a fanbase three or four times that of xbox, and have a games library easily three or four times that of xbox. apprently (ps3 not out yet so who knows) ps3 will be fully backwards compatible, x360 will only be compatible with the most popular xbox games. x360 however will be cheaper and comes out a few months earlier, offers a better online experience (and b4 sonyfan boys send me hate mail, the current xbox live is doing better than the ps2's online scene)and is probabily going to be a hell of a lot easier to mod (from looking at all the rumours about protection on the ps3), so i think it really comes down to the games. i've got a Ps1, n64, DreamCast, and an xbox. like all gamers here (like it or not xbots) i started on PS1 which was king at the time, then got suckered in by n64 bcoz it was *supposedly* better, b4 realising just how pathetic nintendo are, releasing kiddie game after cutesy japanese kiddie game, with a polygon performance that makes the old ataris feel proud. then DC launched and rather than wait for a Ps2, i opted for Dc hoping the games wouldnt be so buggy as the Ps1 game library... oh dear lord, the DC.. brillaint as it supposedly is, has some of the worst quaility games ever, and WTF was chu chu rocket? not wanting to go back to sony with my tail between my legs, i brought an xbox instead of ps2. at first the better graphics and faster loading times kept me happy, untill i finished halo that is... lets face it, all xbox really has is halo :( which was SUPPOSED to be xbox only, but low and behold !! now i can play it on my PC. im sick to death of playing SEGA GT instead of playing Gran tourismo.... sick to death of playing Dead or alive instead of playing Tekken (bouncing boobs dont make a fighting game)... and what decent RPG's does xbox have ???
