Sony has earlier claimed that the PS3 console will play both PlayStation and PS2 games. However Sony spokesperson Reiko Sakamoto recently said to the IDG News Service that the PlayStation 3 might not be 100 per cent backwards compatible.
His comments came after Sony published a list of games which are not compatible with the new silver slimline PS2 console. So far 38 PSone and nine PS2 games were listed, including Tekken 5, Hitman: Contracts and Resident Evil. "We believe multiple factors are responsible," Sakamoto explained that the console has a new and different chipset which is not compatible with the way some software is programmed, that can for some games result in glitches such as hangs and slow game saves. They dismiss any bad news about the PS3 as lies, etc. It is almost like a religion for you people, based entirely on faith, facts be damned. In any event, I have to admit that I find myself experiencing a tremendous amount of glee in this news, given how Ken Kutaragi was attacking the Xbox 360 regarding backwards compatibility and boasting again and again how the PS3, because its compatibility would be "hardware based" and not "software based," would be 100% backwards compatible. When are you guys going to face the fact that, while the PS3 may be just as good of a system in many ways as the Xbox 360, it is not everything that Sony and Ken Kutaragi say it is. Most of you may be too young to remember the release of the PS2 (I remember the release of the Atari 2600, which gives you an idea of my experience in these matters). At E3 before the PS2 was released, Sony was displaying videos of almost identical quality to the videos it showed this year at E3 and TGS. In the end, the PS2 was never capable to achieving the CGI-level animations Sony was boasting. I honestly have no idea what the PS3 is capable of, or the Xbox 360 for that matter. As they say, the proof of the pudding will be in the tasting. But you have to realize that PS3 fans are being lied to on a regular basis by Sony. Right now we don’t have a very big staff for this site resulting in fewer news posts than we would have liked, but that should be just temporarily and we also have some new site features coming soon that will really help with keeping you all updated with PS3 news. So you think we should lie and change the article so that Reiko Sakamoto says that the PlayStation 3 will be 100 per cent backwards compatible just because that would be good news instead of bad news??? Out of over 8,000 PS-PS2 games, the PS2 doesn't support roughly 50-100 PS1 games. So what. Most of the games I've never played and never want to play anyway. I had no doubt the PS3 wouldn't be backwards compatible just because it's using an Nvidia chipset which I would imagine to be having some problems running games from the older Playstation format. This is most certainly not the end of the world. And as for WildAttorney. I laugh at you. Yeah, we're being lied to as Sony fans. So? You act as if you're convincing us that this is the first time some prolific company has ever lied to sell their product. I remember the demos released at the E3 involving the PS2 and you're wrong. Everything they showed has matched or trumped what they showed and in fact, a member of the IGN boards put a comprehensive post displaying aforementioned demos and screens from games such as MGS3, God of War, etc... so, if you wish I can dig that up and present it as evidence. Actually...Unregistered - Truth 10.27.2005 22:20 Since Microsoft has moved from an Nvidia chipset to an ATI chipset you can bet your ass that the amount of games able to be ported over will be extremely thin. In fact, I would say 15-20% is a fairly decent number. Mostly million dollar sellers and possible fan favorites down the road. Even through emulation, Microsoft is pretty much pulling money from their own pocket when it comes to making certain games backwards compatible. 34 -

Well here's a list off the top of my head. 1. dissapointing launch titles 2. pdz didn't seem to have good graphics ... much later I saw the hd in game trailer which changed that 3. first off thought the console looked odd and kind of ugly, but later liked it 4. I though full auto, doa, nfs, and some other games didn't have as impressive graphics as I hoped 5. I've said many many times that I didn't like some parts of MS's marketing strategy 6. dissapointed that the xbox 360 hardware was just improved current gen., nothing like the cell, which is just an improved processor, but still...ehh ---some of these views have changed, but i've still said them. ---also i've said over and over the xbox 360 is less powerful, but...you know the rest 42 -

There are some games on the ps1 that don't play on the ps2. Sony didn't lie, they realized that there might be a slight chance that the ps3 will not be 100 percent combatible with all games so if the ps3 comes out with a few games that don't work people won't say they were lying. Off topic, I have the game shadow of the colossus, I think it's broken because there are no colossi in the game. Well I only been playing for two hours but I haven't found nothing. Gears of War won't come out until 2006, I was really looking forward to playing that game, it really sucks that I'll have to wait until 2006 and 2007 for good games to come out. Everybody's making much ado about nothing. Sony will probably get the vast amount of titles up and running on the PS3 but there'll be a few problem titles that just won't work - that's still a damn sight more than the Xbox 360's 'list', if you can even call it that. One thing that puzzles me is why do people insist that the Revolution is going to be 'backwards compatible'? Downloading data from the internet and playing on it is nothing more than emulation of sorts - it doesn't require physical media to be inserted into the Revolution to be played on. Backwards compatibility on the PS3 is just an added bonus. I, for one, never played a PS1 game on my PS2. Maybe others did, but I cannot see the need for it at all seeing as it's going to cost Sony an arm and a leg to get right for the PS3. 46 -

Some more answersWebmaster 10.28.2005 10:08 Yes this site is owned by the same people who own Xbox360News.com, as well as some other websites. Some that we will show you in the near future. At the moment we have limited resources, and since the Xbox 360 is launching before the PS3 we needed to put most of those resources into that site first. We do of course hope to make this site as active as the 360 site, but to do that we need to find some dediacated people who want write for this site. And that is not easy, most people do it for a week or two, and than after finding out how much work it is to keep a website updated with daily news articles they don't want to do it anymore. But again we have some new ideas on how we can fix this problem, more on that soon. Also for us only posting negative news about Sony, that is not true. If you read all the news posts so far you will see that we have posted plenty good news too. Again, as soon as we are done with the projcts that are today taking most of our time, we will take a hard look at this site to see what we can do to improve it. 54 -

Nothing is perfect. Respect the game for what it is. The few games that won't work you probably wont be playing in another year anyway and there will be so many new games out that you won't care about your old games they will truly be old news. There will be so many games that will be bc that you wouldnt really have a reason to complain then again if you are the one complaining at that time then it's not sony or microsoft its you. Be easy and enjoy your console. The 360 was having bc issues as well but that's nothin. I'm looking forward to so many new games and features with the new system that many of the old games will probabley collect dust on a shelf somewhere or i'll just fire up the old system in the basement and play with friends or whomever when the time comes. Basically it comes down to Sony wanting you to play and buy more games right? So, if the PS3 is your first console and you've already spent a huge amount of money on it and accompaning games... would you want to buy a PS2 to play it's games? No. You'd want to have the feature already instilled into your new console. It's all about practicality and c'mon, there's no negative to having backwards compatability. It get's Sony more money through people buying their previous systems games and allows new buyers to experience those games without having to buy the older hardware to play it. Plus, if you're like me, sometimes you like to go back and play games like Colony Wars, Twisted Metal 2, Suikoden II, FFVII, etc. Which I will be doing with the PS3 as well. 65 -

Here's an logical explanation from another person who does his homework: "I believe that KK is playing everyone to be a fool, here's why: PS3 will not be expensive: Kaz Hirai and Chatani said it would be 'competitive'), and I believe them over KK ("PS2 will be under $900"). When he said PS3 would be expensive he was laughing. They also told investors and partners that it will be less than 40 000yen ($368). Why will RSX cost more than R500? If anything it should be cheaper: no eDRAM, fixed royalties, no radical architecture (as yet....). Also the R500 is made up of two dies. Cell $6billion dev costs (including fabs) are split 3 ways to IBM Toshiba and Sony, HAVABlogbillion for Sony, thats $20 per cell, fixed dev costs (assuming 100 million cells made and sold, used just on PS3, not including PS4, TVs, PSP2, mobile phones etc). XeCPU will cost a similar amount to make as cell, because die sizes are not hugely different, extra transistors is not the defining factor in manufacturing costs, die size is. Plus Sony is one, if not the most experienced company in 90nm production (pioneered this production method more than 6 years ago with PS2), an area which MS and ATI have almost no experience in (the same goes for nVidia, which is the reason why they are using Sony's 90nm production method for the RSX). Another thing is that only 7 of the PS3 Cell's 8 SPEs are activated, meaning that if one SPE is malfunctioning Sony won't have to discard the CPU but just deactivate the malfunctioning SPE, unlike MS who will have to discharge their CPUs if just one of the PPC cores are malfunctioning. A wifi card costs $40 now, to a consumer, how much for Sony, at manufacturing costs? Less than half? Bluetooth is 2.4GHz tech, the same as the 360's system and will most likely be the same price to manufacture as X360 solution. Sony do not have to pay Ericsson (the creators of Bluetooth) royalties, as Sony own Ericsson, MS will have to Logitech. Blu-Ray is the only real cost and will not be $100 more, all it is is a violet laser as well as a red laser, there will be no huge change in manufacturing costs. Stand alone players will be a $1000, just like DVD players were when PS2 came out, and how much was PS2 at launch ($300). Another important thing is that Sony isn't alone in the BD R&D, all the biggest hardware companies (minus Toshiba) are sharing the R&D cost and experience in gaining the most cost-efficient production method. When the PS3 hits the shelves the production cost of BD drives will be much less than today and the money lost on the PS3 drives will be compensated by the gain from selling BD movies and 1080p TVs (HD-DVD only run 720p resolution meaning that Sony wouldn't be able to sell its 1080p TVs to people with HD-DVD players). Another important medium which needs mentioning is the memory-stick, the PS3 will make this medium much more common which will make more people buy Sony's memory-stick products like video-cams, car phones, MP3 players and so on. I cannot see what all the doom and gloom stories are based upon. If someone can point out where I am wrong with logic rather than speculation, please do. Please do not use analysts ideas, they do not know squat, (PS2 and PSP=$500 at launch)." At G4 tv during the tokyo game show and in game informer the excutives clearly stated that the ps3 controller and the console were concept designs so the final product's will be unknown as of next year. Also the game Developers are getting the new tools that they need, personaly I think that some of you guy's need to move on because hanging onto non-logical facts and leading people on is wrong, plus Famimatsu said it'll be below $400 dollars. Personally I think it's better for Sony to announce the things before the launch of the console because it's better to not lead people on and wait unitl the last moment to tell people what's going on with their product. 73 -

If any of you guy's heard of Fatal Frame, the head creative director Shibata and his studio have been making games for the ps2 for quite some time, new studio's are opening for tecmo and not everyone will agree with Itagaki and team Ninja. I know this is old but John Carmack being 100% gung ho on the 360 doesn't mean everyone is in the same boat with him, like I said before one of the Id software developers said that they should see what all the consoles can do for the company. Carmack may be an genius but the Higher Up's decide what the company does and if their are internal problems because of his decision they can find someone else to do his job. I'm not saying that Carmack will be fired but people who don't pull their weight for the good of an company get fired or decide to leave for their own reasons, Alexander Seropian and Ex-bungie employess used to work for Bungie but decided to make wideload games for unorthodox gamers probably because they didn't want to hang onto Halo forever or something else. Ubisoft is has been making multiplatforms and exclusives for both consoles for the last past years they've expanded faster than any game developing company before them in the last 5 years and a lot of video game design programs, colleges, and so on have expanded in Quebec because of Ubisoft. Like I said Before I'm Canadian and when it comes to computer animation and design, Canada is an good environment with that stuff, I'm not saying Canada is the best place for game design talent but I've seen some pro's do wonders with Computer animation and video games. Koei Canada is new and they're making 7 projects besides Fatal Inertia so it's good to hear that new development teams from Canada are getting into the field because it makes me proud to hear it. Canadians are getting into the video game development field, Koei Canada is fairly new and they have an staff of 30 people right now but they plan to have an staff of 150 to 200 people in the years to come. Some of you fanboy's can say whatever you want about my country but Canada is my home and I love my country no matter what anybody say's about it, no country in the world is perfect and all those Canadian joke's don't bother me. Steve Job's is pretty stupid sometimes I bet whenever someone put's their foot in the door with something innovative for Apple the guy probably thinks it's a bad idea. Microsoft saying that the Xbox was the best console when the disk drive broke down was a big disapointment for their first try than the emotion chip, my ps2 works perfectly but if it didn't work properly I could go to Game Stop and they would send it Sony to get it fixed and I would get it back working brand new. People do yourselves a favor and don't listen to the big wigs because they don't work for either company and they don't know what their competition is doing with their products. The SPE and PPE units can interoperate fully in a cache-coherent shared-memory programming model. With respect to the SPE units, all DMA operations are cache-coherent. Conventional shared memory load instructions are replaced by the combination of a DMA operation from shared memory to local store, using an effective address in common with all PPE or SPE units assigned to this address space, and a load from local store to the register file. Conventional shared-memory store instructions are replaced by the combination of a store from the register file to the local store and a DMA operation from local store to shared memory, using an effective address in common with all PPE or SPE units assigned to this address space. Equivalents of the Power Architecture atomic update primitives (load with reservation and store conditional) are also provided on the SPE units by utilizing the DMA lock line commands. It is also not difficult to contemplate a compiler or interpreter that would manage part of the local store as a local cache for instructions and data obtained from shared memory. Ill finish with this: Asymmetric thread runtime model: In this extension to a familiar runtime model, threads can be scheduled to run on either the PPE or the SPEs, and threads interact with one another as they do in a conventional SMP. This model provides an excellent foundation for many Cell programming models by extending the thread or lightweight task models of a modern operating system to include processing units having different instruction sets such as the PPE and SPE. Various scheduling policies can then be applied to both the PPE and SPE threads to optimize performance and utilization. While full preemptive task switching on SPEs is supported for debugging, it is costly in terms of performance and resources during runtime, and FIFO run-to-completion models or lightweight cooperative yielding models can be employed for efficient task scheduling. But here is the beautiful thing about this sony is preparing to deliver an online service that will be as good as xbox live and maybe better. But the sony may have a trick up there sleeve, because they have something called the eyetoy and they can implement that into thier online plan. There is already a game you can get on the ps2 where you can view somebody else's video through the camera and when you mixed that with online play, you have something creative. In the end, I would suspect m$ to still have the best online experience but sony shouldn't be too far behind even if they do copy xbox live. You have your opinions and I have mine, I respect your opinions it's cool. No matter how well done a system is, it's nothing is the softeware isnt taking full advantage of it. And when the systems first drop, pretty much all the games will be sh!t, until the developers get a hold on the system. Like I said up top, the ps3 will no doubt be a nice system, I'm just rollin with the 360 this time around. And because of the ps3's architet design it'll be a while before developers can make the graphics and things look like what was promised and that goes for the 360 as well. They will be two hot systems. It's up to the software developers to get the most out of the systems. If they cut corners we as consumers will know but if they do their jobs well and really push the systems then we are in for some treats. I've actaully played the 360 for the first time today and the graphics looked great, however their is nothing next gen about it. (call of duty). You can see the systems power, but if the developers arent pushing it, it means nothing. Ps3 or 360. 189 -

As i have been reading for the past years anticipating for the new console i have discovered as i believe many of you also, that everything is just a Marketing plan for both sony and Microsoft. Naturally for a company to boast for it's product some things concerning the actual product have to be real. Monitoring the market it is not possible for sony to be 100% compatible with ps2 and ps1 games as the new chipset involved will have difficulties processing along with the vga from nvidia which introduces a whole new architecture including the fact that previous games were programmed in a different way. You shouldn't fight with each other on matters like these especially when we don't have the real product infront of us. It's natural for companies as i said to boast their products particulary when both companies are trying to win the Market. Anyway i hope you guys stop fighting and just lay back and wait for things to unleash. And another thing. I have noticed that an xbox owner will buy an xbox360 and a ps2 owner will do the same by purchasing a ps3. The reason is just simple. you learn with something you continue with something similar that won't need any adjusting period. Personally i will buy a ps3 but not for its hardware specs, but just because i believe the ps3 will offer me the gaming experience i was looking for. this includes everything from looks controller and variety of games. 211 -

ViviciousNodieza 10.31.2005 16:58 In case you didn't check out the other post on the different article Vivicious and others (some of which had cruel comments which I will ignore because they are too dumb to even register), sorry if I was confusing, no you can't visually SEE the difference between 60 and 120 frames when a Tv can only flash, 30 (or 60, depending on HD or not) BUT if or when that tv that can display 120fps comes out, no you still wont SEE the difference but your eyes will be much less irritated, (especially those use to cpu monitors and high refresh rates) and they will be "decieved" into seeing smoother flowing images, Nintendo was talking about stuff like that a while ago saying how much your mind consciencely doensn't like to stare at a tv when you play a game and they were thinking up ways to fix that and I believe this will be a step in that direction, like I said anything below 85fps/85hz on something that can display 200fps/hz (cpu monitor)kills ME, the mouse rectile looks like it's blinking and everything looks flickery, if you stare really close at a monitor and stare at white or gray you can see the flickers even at 85hz, my girlfriend can't tell the difference, but I know many who can and so can I... but on a TV 30fps is fine for me, but 120 would be neat. Sorry if I seemed harsh on that last post, I just didn't agree with your opinion that Ken is crazy, I think it's cool he's trying to push the envelope, even if it's excessive, at least ps3 isn't just an "upgrade." I had the day off and I spent the entire day at the local gamestop and spent some real time with the 360 and I gotta admit. I really really like it. Call of duty 2, and Kameo is what I was playing and A few other guys were playing the original xbox situated right next to it then we'd switch up and there is a huuuuuge difference in the two. Call of duty was so much fun and the controls were perfect. I still couldnt get into the king kong game I hate the camera. Then I had to remember that those were only demos the final product would be better. Yes microsoft has done a spectacular job with the 360. I really really enjoyed it. Kameo was alot of fun too once I start to figure out certain things. I cannot wait to get mine and the high def tv did a wonderful job displaying the images the lightening was terrific. Yes the 360 is allll that. I had the whole day to just play it and enjoy it and that I did. 215 -
