Residents of Japan can soon enter Sony’s game creation competition. The contest is designed to give birth to new original projects for the PS2, PSP and PS3. The “Let’s Play a Game!” competition (also known as Yarouze or Net-Yaroze) has been running since 1995 with great success. Both professionals and amateurs can apply, and the successful candidate will enjoy complete support from Sony Japan, with all living and production expenses paid by the company, as well as access to equipment and software required to create the game. Sony will also help with putting toghter a development team for the project. Entrants must submit their entries via the “Let’s Play a Game!” website, which will be launched on November 1 2005. The 3 core in X360 can execute 2 ops per second, makeing 6 ops per second max for all cores running at max efficiency. How much of a jump in performance will say, the alpha dev kits ( used to run MGS4 ) versus the final dev kits released this December. I'm sure you know that the alpha dev kits were running 256MB of Rambus XDR RAM, an underclocked 2.4GHz Cell processor and "reportedly" using the Nvidia 7800 GTX GPU. So with this in mind, I ask the question again. How much of a leap in performance will the PS3 with an added 256MB of DDR3 RAM, 3.2GHz Cell processor and the RSX have? Personally, I think MGS4 was only a half if not less of what the PS3 is capable of. We haven't seen anything yet. 75 -

I'm admittedly not a huge fan of the Unreal engine. I just think it's really plastic looking as compared to what games like Lair or MGS4 have showcased. Don't get me wrong, it's a well designed engine and many developers will benefit from having it, I just personally don't like it all that much. About the others tools being included into the PS3. All I've really heard so far are the Unreal ( 3.0? ) engine, Havok physics engine and ProDG including some sort of decomplier that Sony has been working close with for the PS2 for some time now. My question is... how do these tools help in game development? Are they a key factor as some people are telling us, or do they just help the process along. Basically, is the PS3 a lost cause without the tools, as in, is it too hard to develop for on its own? One more thing. You didn't really anwser my first question. How much of a performance boost do you expect to see from the alpha dev kits to the ones released in December ( November for you I guess ). Thanks alot for your input by the way. The compiler is easier to use than PS2, Sony/IBM have made this easier for developers. As for the Doom3 engine, its up-to the developers to make character's/environment's look less plastic and more realistic, the engine itself is like a base unit which you work upon, all the elements are there but you still have to create the character's/environment's, the Engine just speeds thing up, its more like a building block, that's the best way to describe it. 79 -

The scary part is that everyone tells me that the PS3 is harder to program for than the Xbox360, and the tools are nowhere near the quality of Microsoft's. (hey guy's, stop production on next gen GTA, some guy on a forum doesn't like our game's) The E.E (Emotion engine) wasn't the problem, it was the lack of scratch pad ram (only 4mb) and system ram, that hurt PS2, I still think PS2 was great to work on though, and it learnt us a lot of great new programming ideas, PS3 is the same, there are a lot of new things to leans, that's why we like working for Sony. 133 -

xxxxxx 10.31.2005 18:55 I know I've said a million and one times the 360 is superior to the PS3, but recently I've done some studying on the 2 systems and it seems that the PS3 is better than the 360. Besides being technically superior in almost every way the PS3 also has a far larger customer base than does the 360 and only a moron would argue that. Also, if you realy take a good look at 360 game and Xbox games, you'll see that the 360 is not really nexgen, but instead an Xbox 1.5 of sorts. As of this weekend I have gotten a refund on my 360 preorder and am patiently waiting for PS3 preorders to start. I'm strongly advising you, the Xbox 360 is not what you think it will be. Cancel your orders if possible. 135 -
