Those are the words of Kazunori Yamauchi, President, Polyphony Digital, VP Development SCEI, in a recent Q&A session held by Sony. Yes, this is straight from Sony’s PR department, but it should be said that much of what you read about the 360 have roots in the Xbox PR camp as well. So this is no better no worse, and frankly I don’t blame either side for trying. In fact, the ideal situation is that all three next-gen consoles succeed, and hoping for anything else is the same as wetting yourself to stay warm, and we all know the long-term outcome of that solution…

Unregistered - Mathoss 10.13.2005 12:56 Everybody is talking about NEXT-GEN, revolutions, a new gaming world... The only thing i see from XBOX and SONY is better graphics and physics. I wouldn't call that next-gen but upgrade. Nintendo is comming out with a nice idea with their remote but I still leave me hungry. I would love to see something new, i dont know something like an eyetoy that interacts with the game in a kind of emotion detector, something really revolutionary, or a least a new kind of game. Right now i consider theses are upgraded consoles not next gen. Better gfx, AI, online or physics are just not next-gen for me. I would love someone the convince me else. 13 -

But you call PS3's GPU next-gen, yet X360's isn't? They're the ones coming with new tech in their GPU, instead of PS3. Luckily PS3 still has the CPU and Blu-ray (which isn't that important if you have a HDD for example, still, it's pretty handy), but still: Try to at least stay a little realistic. They're both def. "Next-gen", though I get the feeling people think next-gen needs to come with innovative material in general. There was nothing "innovative" about the PS1 (Sega beat em to it), the MASTER DRIVE, Xbox, PS 2, GC, etc. Maybe some minor details, but nothing spectacular. So why expect it now? The only innovative thing is Revolution's controller, and we still will have to see if that even catches on. 18 -

The only difference I see in the PS3 as opposed to the XBOX 360 is the Cell processor. As far as graphics go I don't see one really having as huge advantage as some may like. The guy sounds like he knows what he's talking about and if true then yeah, I believe it will unlock new gateways in the way we play games in the near future. 45 -
Well Actually...Nodieza 10.14.2005 06:48 Actually you guys are wrong again about graphics. The modern Gpu's are so powerful that there isn't a processor or multicore processor that can maxamize them yet. For example, if you bought the new Nvidia GTX and have a 2 gig pentium 4 computer you still wouldn't be able to run games at 1600 x 1200 just because the cpu can't keep up or feed that powerful mofo video card enough info(maybe a supercomputer), it would run smooth but skip every 5 or 10 seconds to reload the cache and maybe even crash on the 2 gig. So in other words the better the processor the better the graphics CAN BE untill they maxamize the gpu, but I doubt that would happen since sony still hasn't maxamized the emotion engine yet and I am certain the xbox gpu can do better as well.Memory is also important, it is a true fact that if ps2 had as much memory as xbox they'd be producing very similar graphics because the emotion engine is quite powerful(it can produce HDR lighting and has been since I C O, which is one hell of and effect that most cpu gpu's can't even run yet) And as a side note anyone who says sony lied about there ps2 tech demos is a retard, am I the only one here who has seen them? The bouncer made those tech demos look bad, so stop listening to rumors and find out the facts... anywas also as a side note: why do you think it's such a big deal that ps3 games will be runnning at 1080P and 1080I? Because it requires one hell of a beastly processor to do so, never mind on 2 Outputs at once! So technicaly speaking if the cell is a better processor we may see better graphics sooner on the ps3 than 360 just because it'll be able to better utalize the gpu, even if it was the exact same as 360's. Also stop saying cell and multicore processors are the same! Have you ever heard of a multicore producing grapics on it's own? Does it provide for the sounds as oposed to 360's sound chip? While the 360 may be capable of producing the same "effects" I guarantee it couldn't run them at 1080P, wait a minute 360 cant run at 1080p... hmmm interestiing. Mgs 4 still has a while to go and I am sure they can add a few more "effects" in. It's funny how they have similar "effects" yet completly different engines, yet again I point out the polygon count, snakes hair has more polygons than a sing GOW character, HIS HAIR! stupid bump mapping, tricks everyone in to thinking they are looking at a well crafted character and I love how specific the word "effects" is... oh and here's another thing, that trailer was runing on an alpha kit, yes alpha, not even close to the ps3. Yet other thing, I can make an honest bet that nobody here saw the Mgs4 trailer in HD or at 60 FPS, well untill you do, you have no right to comment on it because damn it looks a million times better in HD, most of you dont even have an HD monitor. Also, the theoretical output of the RSX is not capable of playing a game such as the old Halo at 1080p either. It is is the math, it is physically impossible. Also, you're right about the MGS4 demo, it was running on alpha kits, so time will tell. I can't imagine it being a bad looking game come launch time, seeing as how it is one of the few good exclusives they still have left after everyone is jumping ship for the 360's better XNA development kit. 61 -

It is too costly and time consuming. 2- They are losing most exclusive developers. 3- They want to wait for a YEAR before releasing the PS3. 4- They are not showing enough to the consumer to compete with MS's PR dept. 5- They have an outdated Video card, which is technically inferior to ATi's video card in the 360. (If you want third party support for this statement, I can give you a link, or ten.) 6- Opinion polls already show the PS3 sliding in Japan. Add all this up, and Sony HAS to do something by next Fall, which is the actual release date of the PS3. I am thinking they might actually incoporate a more powerful video card, since the current video card is nothing but a slightly faster clocked 7800GT. I am guessing since the company is facing slowly slipping stock prices and investment delays, due to market doubt, they will pull an ace out of their sleeves to make this system a little more powerful than the 360. Back to the Developers (Yawn)Unregistered - Cynical Gamer 10.14.2005 16:46 Punk Street I'm pretty sure that the rumour about developers leaving the PS3 are true but we are looking at it from the wrong perspective. If you go video game shopping in Akihabara you see that there are hundreds of video games available on the PS2 that we will never even see a preview or a screenshot of here in the west. My main recollection was of the Simple2000 series of games. This series is made up of simple (funny given the series' name) games, cheaply made and sold. They seemed to cover all bases driving, action etc with quite a few point and click style forensic detective and legal games. Anyway I think it is these sort of boutique developers who are feeling the pinch in respect of the development requirements of the PS3. If Sony as stated require all games to be on Blu-ray to crack down on piracy the increased manufacturing costs will reduce their margins. Microsoft could buy a lot of goodwill in Japan by riding to the rescue. We don't have this sort of market here in the west so I think we were all a bit to eager to assume it was the bigger developers who were jumping ship. This won't have any effect on us here in the west but it could give Microsoft the foot in the door they so desperately need in japan. 74 -

It can show amazing graphics like Resident evil 4, Doom 3, and the new Farcry game like the others. So, whats wrong with it? Can I still have Next-gen effects and such with my TV? Because I simply can't shell over 2000$ for a TV that will make my games run smoother, unless of course I have to. The monitor I have is the " 19" MFM-HT95 HT-Series PC/TV " It costs a pretty penny but damn is it sweet. The 1080p rez is 1920 x 1080 like you said, but the rez on this monitor is native 720 but can go to 1080i. Plus ps3 can always down resoloution to 720 if you dont have a 1080p tv, so you can still buy that "viable option of 720p". #80 Your monitor is flashing 60 times per second, that's what 60hz is. frame rate is different in the fact that thats how many frames show up per flash, so in other words if you have it set to 60hz and are running a game at 85 FPS you wouldn't notice the extra 25 frames but at a refresh rate of 85 you would see the 85 frames flash per second, make sense? I set my monitor at 85hz because anything less hurts my eyes because I can see the spaces imbetween flashes. Talking out my arse? You guys are ignorant I swear. Guess so... 1) If Sony can't manufacture enough Cell chips fast enough, they can get some from IBM or Toshiba. 2) If Sony can't manufacture Blu-Ray drives fast enough, they can buy some from BenQ, Hitachi, LG, HP, Panasonic, Pioneer, and Samsung. Most likely Samsung though, because they have some arrangement with them. However, I'm sure that any of these companies would supply some Blu-Ray drives (at reduced or manufacturing cost) to Sony to make sure there are enough Playstation 3s, the device that will most likely propel Blu-Ray far ahead of HD-DVD. The only two things that should be worried about for shortages of a worldwide launch would be Blu-Ray drives and the Cell Processor. The GPU is being manufactured by Nvidia, which is just as capable of supplying high-end graphics cards as ATI is (if not more qualified). Bluetooth devices and li-ion batteries can be modified from Sony Ericsson cell phones. The list goes on... I'd just like to get somethings off my chest before I leave though. At the moment the Xbox 360 is the only real console out of the next gen systems (it's in production and people have had a chance to play on the final hardware). The PS3 is nothing but a prototype casing, an A4 sheet of numbers and some videos. The Revolution is a prototype casing and a controller. The fanboys might be sold on the numbers on that piece of paper and the videos but for me the PS3 won't be impressive untill I see it do something impressive. I find the Revolution more impressive than the PS3 at this point because at least the controller concept lets me imagine what sort of gameplay innovations they can produce. As I've said before I will own all 3 next gen consoles and I don't pick favourites. For me games do the talking and Sony seem to be a mute. 115 -

Next up seems to be the Revolution’s price: will it really be as low as $99? Recent rumors surfacing on the internet seem to suggest that this is quite possible. The argument in favor of this price point is that the Revolution will be the least powerful of the three consoles, and will require game developers to significantly modify games in order to achieve cross-platform playability due to the Revolution’s unique controller and reduced power. However, since Nintendo is largely reliant on exclusive titles, their choice to go for “lightweight” hardware may work to their advantage by making the console easier to develop for. But could it sell for $99? Examining recent comments made by Nintendo president Saturo Iwata seems to indicate that this is possible. In an interview with television network G4, Iwata conceded that Nintendo’s next generation console would be less powerful, saying, “If you are just going to compare the spec sheets and spec numbers, Revolution may not have an equal or higher number as the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360.” He went on to say that he wished to expand the gaming population with the launch of the Revolution, attracting non-gamers to the world of gaming by way of its intuitive new controller, and, it would seem, a lower price tag. AINT IT FUNNYUnregistered - AINT IT FUNNY 10.15.2005 08:04 aint it funny how all the ps3 fanboys say sh1t like " i dont like the games for the 360 , nothing new , and the all look boring" then go on to rave about 3 games for the ps3 ie mgs4 dmc 4 and vision granturisimo . 3 games that are not new and that are very boring. i also find it funny when they say that halo is sh1t (without ever playing it) then go on to claim every new fps for their sony console a halo beater. do you realise how dumb you sound ??? another funny one is how they say the 360 gfx are worse than the xbox ???? haha thats so funny . and just how great the ps3 is (without ever seeing any thing running on it or playing it) you guys crack me up i think they should hold a ps3 comedy night and all the fanboys get up on stage that would be the funnyiest thing ever. 117 -
To # 115WarHawk 10.15.2005 08:19 Nintendo systems are in the past, the reason I say that is because, their games haven't grown up with the generation of people that was playing their systems back in the day. Revolution will be just the same, another kiddy console, most people today buy a console that the whole family can use, Mum, Dad, Son and Daughter, Nintendo only really caters for 2 of those, the kids. No offence to Nintendo followers, I used to own NES and SNES, didn't bother with N64, as I was growing too old for the games the system offered. 118 -
WarHawk 10.15.2005 08:33 Warhawk, I-8, Motorstorm and Lair are some new games for PS3 and whatever new title Naughty Dog comes up with. I tell you what is funny though, I just got a game today thats just come out on PC and its also for X360, Brother in Arms Earned in Blood. there's lots more new titles for X360 coming to PC, so I and alot of people on here dont need a 360 to play 360 games, I'll be getting PS3 for its exclusive content. 119 -

Until Next YearPunk Street 10.15.2005 09:26 I'm getting tired of the flamming on this site all this sticking and stabbing at each other is rather boring, Sony's being hush-hush about their console so they won't make the same mistake they made before. Right now they're planning all their cards and the games are in development so until next year when it's February at the Akihabara ps3 convention or whatever it is they'll keep quiet on their console this year. Nintendo's controller reminds me of the light gun and that control glove it better not be a failure because they've been screwing up lately, no offense nintendo fanboys but they need to step up this time, I truly hope they deliver this time. The MG4 demo was running on a early alpha dev kit, so who knows what the actual games will look like when they're on the complete ps3 consoles , so anyways you guys can flame o |
