Those are the words of Kazunori Yamauchi, President, Polyphony Digital, VP Development SCEI, in a recent Q&A session held by Sony. Yes, this is straight from Sony’s PR department, but it should be said that much of what you read about the 360 have roots in the Xbox PR camp as well. So this is no better no worse, and frankly I don’t blame either side for trying. In fact, the ideal situation is that all three next-gen consoles succeed, and hoping for anything else is the same as wetting yourself to stay warm, and we all know the long-term outcome of that solution…

Unregistered - Mathoss 10.13.2005 12:56 Everybody is talking about NEXT-GEN, revolutions, a new gaming world... The only thing i see from XBOX and SONY is better graphics and physics. I wouldn't call that next-gen but upgrade. Nintendo is comming out with a nice idea with their remote but I still leave me hungry. I would love to see something new, i dont know something like an eyetoy that interacts with the game in a kind of emotion detector, something really revolutionary, or a least a new kind of game. Right now i consider theses are upgraded consoles not next gen. Better gfx, AI, online or physics are just not next-gen for me. I would love someone the convince me else. 13 -

But you call PS3's GPU next-gen, yet X360's isn't? They're the ones coming with new tech in their GPU, instead of PS3. Luckily PS3 still has the CPU and Blu-ray (which isn't that important if you have a HDD for example, still, it's pretty handy), but still: Try to at least stay a little realistic. They're both def. "Next-gen", though I get the feeling people think next-gen needs to come with innovative material in general. There was nothing "innovative" about the PS1 (Sega beat em to it), the MASTER DRIVE, Xbox, PS 2, GC, etc. Maybe some minor details, but nothing spectacular. So why expect it now? The only innovative thing is Revolution's controller, and we still will have to see if that even catches on. 18 -

The only difference I see in the PS3 as opposed to the XBOX 360 is the Cell processor. As far as graphics go I don't see one really having as huge advantage as some may like. The guy sounds like he knows what he's talking about and if true then yeah, I believe it will unlock new gateways in the way we play games in the near future. 45 -
Well Actually...Nodieza 10.14.2005 06:48 Actually you guys are wrong again about graphics. The modern Gpu's are so powerful that there isn't a processor or multicore processor that can maxamize them yet. For example, if you bought the new Nvidia GTX and have a 2 gig pentium 4 computer you still wouldn't be able to run games at 1600 x 1200 just because the cpu can't keep up or feed that powerful mofo video card enough info(maybe a supercomputer), it would run smooth but skip every 5 or 10 seconds to reload the cache and maybe even crash on the 2 gig. So in other words the better the processor the better the graphics CAN BE untill they maxamize the gpu, but I doubt that would happen since sony still hasn't maxamized the emotion engine yet and I am certain the xbox gpu can do better as well.Memory is also important, it is a true fact that if ps2 had as much memory as xbox they'd be producing very similar graphics because the emotion engine is quite powerful(it can produce HDR lighting and has been since I C O, which is one hell of and effect that most cpu gpu's can't even run yet) And as a side note anyone who says sony lied about there ps2 tech demos is a retard, am I the only one here who has seen them? The bouncer made those tech demos look bad, so stop listening to rumors and find out the facts... anywas also as a side note: why do you think it's such a big deal that ps3 games will be runnning at 1080P and 1080I? Because it requires one hell of a beastly processor to do so, never mind on 2 Outputs at once! So technicaly speaking if the cell is a better processor we may see better graphics sooner on the ps3 than 360 just because it'll be able to better utalize the gpu, even if it was the exact same as 360's. Also stop saying cell and multicore processors are the same! Have you ever heard of a multicore producing grapics on it's own? Does it provide for the sounds as oposed to 360's sound chip? While the 360 may be capable of producing the same "effects" I guarantee it couldn't run them at 1080P, wait a minute 360 cant run at 1080p... hmmm interestiing. Mgs 4 still has a while to go and I am sure they can add a few more "effects" in. It's funny how they have similar "effects" yet completly different engines, yet again I point out the polygon count, snakes hair has more polygons than a sing GOW character, HIS HAIR! stupid bump mapping, tricks everyone in to thinking they are looking at a well crafted character and I love how specific the word "effects" is... oh and here's another thing, that trailer was runing on an alpha kit, yes alpha, not even close to the ps3. Yet other thing, I can make an honest bet that nobody here saw the Mgs4 trailer in HD or at 60 FPS, well untill you do, you have no right to comment on it because damn it looks a million times better in HD, most of you dont even have an HD monitor. Also, the theoretical output of the RSX is not capable of playing a game such as the old Halo at 1080p either. It is is the math, it is physically impossible. Also, you're right about the MGS4 demo, it was running on alpha kits, so time will tell. I can't imagine it being a bad looking game come launch time, seeing as how it is one of the few good exclusives they still have left after everyone is jumping ship for the 360's better XNA development kit. 61 -

It is too costly and time consuming. 2- They are losing most exclusive developers. 3- They want to wait for a YEAR before releasing the PS3. 4- They are not showing enough to the consumer to compete with MS's PR dept. 5- They have an outdated Video card, which is technically inferior to ATi's video card in the 360. (If you want third party support for this statement, I can give you a link, or ten.) 6- Opinion polls already show the PS3 sliding in Japan. Add all this up, and Sony HAS to do something by next Fall, which is the actual release date of the PS3. I am thinking they might actually incoporate a more powerful video card, since the current video card is nothing but a slightly faster clocked 7800GT. I am guessing since the company is facing slowly slipping stock prices and investment delays, due to market doubt, they will pull an ace out of their sleeves to make this system a little more powerful than the 360. Back to the Developers (Yawn)Unregistered - Cynical Gamer 10.14.2005 16:46 Punk Street I'm pretty sure that the rumour about developers leaving the PS3 are true but we are looking at it from the wrong perspective. If you go video game shopping in Akihabara you see that there are hundreds of video games available on the PS2 that we will never even see a preview or a screenshot of here in the west. My main recollection was of the Simple2000 series of games. This series is made up of simple (funny given the series' name) games, cheaply made and sold. They seemed to cover all bases driving, action etc with quite a few point and click style forensic detective and legal games. Anyway I think it is these sort of boutique developers who are feeling the pinch in respect of the development requirements of the PS3. If Sony as stated require all games to be on Blu-ray to crack down on piracy the increased manufacturing costs will reduce their margins. Microsoft could buy a lot of goodwill in Japan by riding to the rescue. We don't have this sort of market here in the west so I think we were all a bit to eager to assume it was the bigger developers who were jumping ship. This won't have any effect on us here in the west but it could give Microsoft the foot in the door they so desperately need in japan. 74 -

It can show amazing graphics like Resident evil 4, Doom 3, and the new Farcry game like the others. So, whats wrong with it? The monitor I have is the " 19" MFM-HT95 HT-Series PC/TV " It costs a pretty penny but damn is it sweet. The 1080p rez is 1920 x 1080 like you said, but the rez on this monitor is native 720 but can go to 1080i. Plus ps3 can always down resoloution to 720 if you dont have a 1080p tv, so you can still buy that "viable option of 720p". #80 Your monitor is flashing 60 times per second, that's what 60hz is. frame rate is different in the fact that thats how many frames show up per flash, so in other words if you have it set to 60hz and are running a game at 85 FPS you wouldn't notice the extra 25 frames but at a refresh rate of 85 you would see the 85 frames flash per second, make sense? I set my monitor at 85hz because anything less hurts my eyes because I can see the spaces imbetween flashes. Talking out my arse? You guys are ignorant I swear. Guess so... 1) If Sony can't manufacture enough Cell chips fast enough, they can get some from IBM or Toshiba. 2) If Sony can't manufacture Blu-Ray drives fast enough, they can buy some from BenQ, Hitachi, LG, HP, Panasonic, Pioneer, and Samsung. Most likely Samsung though, because they have some arrangement with them. However, I'm sure that any of these companies would supply some Blu-Ray drives (at reduced or manufacturing cost) to Sony to make sure there are enough Playstation 3s, the device that will most likely propel Blu-Ray far ahead of HD-DVD. The only two things that should be worried about for shortages of a worldwide launch would be Blu-Ray drives and the Cell Processor. The GPU is being manufactured by Nvidia, which is just as capable of supplying high-end graphics cards as ATI is (if not more qualified). Bluetooth devices and li-ion batteries can be modified from Sony Ericsson cell phones. The list goes on... I'd just like to get somethings off my chest before I leave though. At the moment the Xbox 360 is the only real console out of the next gen systems (it's in production and people have had a chance to play on the final hardware). The PS3 is nothing but a prototype casing, an A4 sheet of numbers and some videos. The Revolution is a prototype casing and a controller. The fanboys might be sold on the numbers on that piece of paper and the videos but for me the PS3 won't be impressive untill I see it do something impressive. I find the Revolution more impressive than the PS3 at this point because at least the controller concept lets me imagine what sort of gameplay innovations they can produce. As I've said before I will own all 3 next gen consoles and I don't pick favourites. For me games do the talking and Sony seem to be a mute. 115 -

Tekken 5 could have been better it got a 4-5 on X-play and a 8.5 out of 10 on Game informer because it didn't have online play, Namco seriously needs to make tekken 6 as good as 1-3. I mean God of war got a 10 out of 10 in game informer magazine and on sites because Sana Monica Studio worked with what they had, they're are no short cuts or easy ways in life. Now that Sony is better prepared this time around all the developers can put their ideas and the things they wanted into the games for the new console because they were working on a schedule. Dave Jaffe the guy who made worked on God of War got promoted to Creative director of SCE Sana Monica Studio. He said in Game Informer that the games matter and who has the most fun experince playing, when you think about it he's right. The guy actually plays ps2 and xbox games and so do xbox game designers, some of you guys don't do justice for the game developers if you have to bad mouth a company for graphics. Itagaki is a just sad sap dushbag I don't really consider him a game developer if he has to say crap about the things namco did with tekken, but tekken does need to get back to it's roots though. Your right, the actual gameplay probably wont be 5 mil triangles on one character, that trailer was specificly designed to show how many polygons ps3 COULD push, plus it was on the alpha so 2mil polygons on the main character is quite possible in the actual game, but even so 10 textures if f'ing impressive, it doesn't matter how many polys you have after so many you wont notice the difference so they use textures to cut the poly count, so either way sony has the upper hand buddy and so hope you know polys and triangles are 2 different things, oh sorry I guess you knew that already... Kojima said so himself that theirs only some creativty left in Japan, I watch tv and they're are a lot of video game design colleges poping up one by one, once in a while a Japanese Developer will bring a good game overseas such as Team ICO. It seems to me japanese developers who make good games need to bring their games here or this trend will continue in the next generation of gaming, Sony probably saw this coming because their recruting game developers from all over the world. More European game developers and Koreans are starting to get into the field, and Australians are doing the same thing, seems to me the gaming business is in high demand these days. It's not like Sony can go to other places around the world to recruit game developers, supply and demand changes each generation, and if you can't learn to adapt your going to people lose out. It is a method that is done alot these days and as much as i'd like to think ps3 could push 5 mill in one character i don't think it could, still, 100,000+ polys and 10 textures in each character is still mighty impressive espescially when you compare it to GOW which is a flagship title for 360, espescially in terms of graphics, so its still all good 170 -

You mention GT4, but then PS3. I can't really follow what you're getting at. If you mean the graphics in games for current gen consoles, then there will always be exceptions. Some developers are incredibly good at getting the most of out of consoles (PS 2 had GT4 and God of War to name two titles.) God of War looks great, but it's mostly the artistic prowess of the developer that makes it look good, as it's nowhere near the graphical quality of games like Ninja Gaiden or even Kingdom of Heroes. (It doesn't have to be of course, as the gameplay is top notch, I own all 3.) GT4 is harder to compare to Xbox, as the closest Xbox racing release to GT4 is Forza. You'll see that half of the people that have played both will find the graphics of one better, the other half will disagree. It comes down to opinion, even the difference between 30 FPS and 60 FPS is still debateable. The difference between the two is 0,03 seconds (the brain's average response time is 300 ms.), you'd actually only really notice the difference if you payed attention to objects flashing by at very high speeds, it's more a preconcieved idea that the one looks so different. 60 fps might give you the illusion of fluid motion, compared to 30, but we can't really prove that at the moment, though I'm sure developers have tested the idea. Anyway, back to Forza and GT4. I don't really enjoy Forza that much, as I prefer GT4. But the detail in Forza is quite a bit higher if you have the proper equipment (Standard AV cable actually doesn't show off the graphical tech of Forza completely) but doesn't feel as good (Because it's only 30 fps, and GT4 is 60 fps? Anyway, making a comment like that is to show you you shouldn't always follow the hype, which I state afterwards. So it's all pretty coinciding info actually. The Lair movie is pretty obvious, if you need a link I'm sure you can find one if you just use google or the like (I scanned the first page, couldn't find anything and pretty much gave up). I think I remember reading it at a site like guru3d.com which are pretty reliable tech sites. But to save you the trouble, just look at the video. Nothing much happens for longer than a few seconds, and the real detailed shots only have max 2 char's on screen. But when you see the dragon flying towards the group of other dragons, the two fighting, etc. You can see the enormous frame drop, and this is pre-rendered with the "ingame" engine available, running on the alpha kits (that didn't contain actual PS3 hardware, thus the "non exsistant dev kits" remark from before.) Also, don't try throwing remarks back in my face: "the only thing I am trying to do is give the ps3 fans the news this website wont offer and instead I have to waste my time explaining my logic to kids like you." As you were acting pretty childish, which is the only reason I mentioned it. Concerning "links" to substantiate claims, I didn't say I wouldn't do that. Which is just about exactly the same as GT3, besides a few driving missions. -Still no damage to be noted. This made the SP experience a bit tedious at times, as you can just bump pass cars, smash into walls and clip corner railings to create a fast time. (Not very realistic on that part.) -The AI wasn't improved one bit, something that personally was quite disapointing as I wasn't really impressed with the AI in the GT series to begin with. -The car choices...They managed to haul in some more cars, but nowhere near the notable cars we really wanted. (European and American especially. Think of Lambo, Ferrari, Thunderbrd, Impala SS, mazerati, Mustang, etc.) Yet they do have 20 dif. versions of the NSX for example. It's awesome to have 700 cars, but they kind of cheat us a little bit. But certain things you are talking about were def. different than GT3, though alot of the car engine sounds were already in GT3. I still love that game, but these are just certain things that made me feel it was an upgraded GT3. 227 -

This goes the same for the ps3. From what ive seen between the two systems games they are not that graphically diferent.( for the xbox 360 fans that think that the mgs4 demo wasnt real... it was). Ive seen all kinds of game demos from both systems and they are equall. The only difference is the type of games that they have. For instance, some people try to compare kameo v.s mgs4 based on reality when most of us know that kameo isnt meant to look real.Gears of war is one of the best games that will be coming out for the xbox 360 and it is up to par with mgs4. grand tourismo is just as great as project gotham racing too. Be open minded about all three of the systems. Besides, its not in the system, its in the games. Think about it would you rather buy the xbox 360 with all your favorite games or would you buy the ps3 with all of the games you hate. Enough with all the "rushed" console moaning and complaining, even though you've dressed it up differently. Half ass developers like Namco (yes, I'm sorry to say they've really gone downhill in my opinion), Neversoft and certain EA studios have games working on the same engine (multiplatform) as the current gen version while just cranking up the detail a bit. This is also typical console launch behaviour. Companies like Bungie, Bizarre, Bethesda (Even started developing for the X360 (Or the Xbox2 as it was known) before it was announced, instead of porting the PC version.), Konami, Capcom and others however show that it doesn't always have to be that way at launch, and thank God for them and several other developers. The amount of medium/poor quality titles in the upcoming X360 launch is incredibly low compared to every other console launch to date, with just about every genre containing a potential hit. It's def. going to be the strongest lineup in a console launch ever (Look up other launches if you don't believe me, you'd be surprised. Don't forget to seperate Japan and North America/Europe on several consoles.), that is...untill PS3 comes along? You never know. :-) 298 -

R500 has 48 piplines, but can only do vertex shadeing alone or pixel shadeing alone, it cant do both at the same time, so for a true comparison, the 48 piplines have to be halved so you can judge the speed of how the chip will perform. the chip will be of similar speed to a 24 pipline GPU, because it can only do vertex shadeing alone or pixel shadeing alone, the embedded 10MB dram speeds the process up, which will make the GPU run at similar speeds to the RSX which has 32 pixel and vertex shaders combined and can do both types of shadeing at the same time, so the number of pipes stays at 32. There is no other simpler way to explain this, so I hope you all understand what I'm saying. Unless the specs for the PS3 GPU change, then I'm affraid both RSX and the X360 GPU are equal, at least they look that way to me. 345 -

The X360 GPU in theory has the equivelent number of pipes to a 24 pipe GPU, as I explained why earlier. RSX has 32 pipes compaired to X360's 24 pipes, but the RSX also has to do anti aliasing and the other stuff the 10MB frame buffer does in X360, or does it? this is why I said earlier PS3 may have a slight graphical edge, because the Cell chip in PS3 has graphical capabilities, in other words PS3's Cell chip could do anti aliasing and some effects, giving PS3 a graphical advantage, but like I also said, I'm not so sure if it will be that noticeable. The only thing people can do now is sit back and wait and see what both systems can do, at the end of the day its the developers who have to make these systems perform at optimal performance. 348 -

But Realisticly the games are going to look pretty much the same for the first years because the amount of time and money implied to get that power may not be worthed. Also the multi-platform games will be the same on each console or with small difference, wich wont change the gameplay and the trill of that game. The PS3 might have an edge when it comes to blu-ray if ever this becomes the new HD movie standard but nothing is sure. Games are made from needs if the market get big enough for RPG on XBOX games developper will make some for it and probably Sony has plan for on-line FPS since it works so well for MS. For my part I work all day and have friends on the week-end so I won't be playing enough to justified buying 2 or 3 console, so I will wait for PS3 to go out (anyway the first games that come out are always crapy so i won't miss anything not buying a 360)and see what they come up with. The later infamous PS2 consoles to be shipped broke down incredibly easily, even the Slim version from not too long ago. I've known quite a few of people with problems with their PS2, especially if too much dust get's in it you're screwed, it seems very sensitive. But I don't know anyone with a problem with their Xbox, myself included. I've never had a problem with my PS2 either though, so I guess it all comes down to coincidence. The only next-gen title I know of that's coming out (on any next-gen platform, including future PC games) that can really be called original so far (Because of it's blending of genres) would have to be Condemned. That's it. And even then it's a bit iffy. And in the far future Spore of course, nothing is more original than that game. I think it's safe to say that if Will Wright delivers what he has shown, it should be the greatest selling game of all time, easily. And trust me when I say I'm def. not one to overhype games or the like. It's just too incredible. For anyone that hasn't seen anything about it, Will Wright's presentation from somewhere earlier this year still is available. Just a quick register (Don't even have to confirm through e-mail or anything like that) and you can check it out. A hefty hour presentation, but trust me; if you're into gaming in general the whole hour is a necessity, and it def. doesn't get boring. (By which I mean the parts in between when he's showing nothing, he has a great and inventive mind.) I won't say what it's about for the people who haven't seen it, as when I watched it for the first time, I was in pretty much complete shock by the end. I used to spend hours contemplating just such a game some years back, and someone is finally trying to back this unrealistic dream to frutition.
