Word on the net has it that Japanese game developers are leaving the PS3 at a rate worse than Nintendo’s GameCube era”. Kutaragi could be demanding too much greatness from developers, and with initial investment required for PS3 development reported to be as high as US $17.6 million some developers could now be leaving Sony in favour of Microsoft and their Xbox 360.
With the recent cancellation of Condemned for the PS3 and more and more developers announcing a preference for Xbox 360, claiming the PS3 architecture is too advanced and difficult to program for, certainly gives these latest rumors some credibility. It’s a recent article on Japanese site ZakZak that seems to be the source for these recent claims. Most believe it will be a decisive victory [for Sony], with the catch phrase “Don’t stop evolution”, much like Junichirou Koizumi’s election victory with his catchphrase “Don’t stop reformation.” However, another industry insider confided, “This is nothing but a nightmare for many Japanese software development companies.”
One of the reasons for this nightmare is soaring development costs.
The industry insider went on to say, “Kutaragi has said, ‘Please develop suitable software for PS3 - this software must not be of the same standard as PS2 software.’ Developing software for the PS3 from scratch will require an initial investment of at least 2 billion yen [US $17.6 million] [not including development costs]. To be honest on that site they said that the source was anonymous, if you don't believe me go check it out. Right now we don't know if that is true at all,so 360 fans please stay out of this, let Sony fans worry about that.When the PS2 was about to come out, there were rumors that it was difficult to produce for and that Sony was losing support in the end i don't know if that was true but i can say that Sony had and still have one hell of a support for the PS2. Common i mean what do these developpers want, Sony is aiming for realistic games, so expect the architecture of the PS3 to be totally different and difficult than those plastic doll graphs of the 360(not all game though but a good many). Humans are more complicated than any living other thing, so if the graphics are to approach Hollywood movies well for Christ's sake expect it to be different than the same old consoles with an upgraded graphic chips. I believe in Sony, i had 8 years with them now and i'm not even thinking of buying another console other than the PS3, so if Sony is to die so will I, God forbid. I think in the end just like the PS2 developpers will greatly embrace the change and still keep us #1. 22 -

They have to have known they would've priced a lot of companies out of development with that one. I have my doubts as to the authenticity of this one. Also, with the middleware that is being licensed, it's not starting completely from scratch, even though some articles say to "throw away your old code"--that was directed at both multicore machines, not just PS3. And with the PS2 having the difficult hardware to develop for, I think Sony is smarter than doing that twice. And, logically, if the developers are leaving due to his request to not make games that look like the PS2, does that mean they will make they will be making original XBOX-looking games if departing for the 360? I think not... If it is true, Sony will have really shot itself in the foot (still doubt it). PS3 fans, hang on. Not everything on the internet is credible (obviously). I haven't seen any HDTV, DLP/LCD/Plasma........ that can really handle the speeds the top of the line Video cards are producing. 1080p is nearly nonexistant and most HDTVs have a 60htz refresh rate. That is only 60 frames per second, piss poor preformance if you ask me. What is the use of having a 60" LCD if it can't handle the next gen systems. Have any "gosting" or "rainbow" problems with your monster tv? All I am trying to say is, the HDTVs of today are not ready for the next gen consoles. DO YOUR HOMEWORK BEFORE BUYING ONE FOR GAMING SONY loosing game developers, not good! But with the big dogs at sony talking $hit about XBOX360 and Nintendo products, what do you expect. You have no idea how programming a game is and what it implies.Both systems a RISC base computing none of them re-invented the weel. Bassically you can build a games on the tools already availlable and use the same source code on a different compliler to make it compatible, even bettween different platform (PS3,XBOX even PC). Of course if you want to get the maximum out of a system you must start from scratch and that is where it is expensive. But thoose tools from scratch wont come out until a year or so, just remember the difference in quality of games at launch (PS2 XBOX) of a console and what we see now... And for thoses who dont know how the market goes, software compagnies will pay the initial investment to develop thoses tools, even if the are expensive, because they are going to sell (and get money back on their investment) them to company who dont have the capital to invest in engine development. So bassically this is all bullcrap and if a company doesn't go with one or another platform it is more a political issue then an technicall issue. 68 -

Jesus ChristPunk Street 10.04.2005 12:58 Normally I don't want to start anything but some of you Xbox 360 fan boys or whatever you want to be called sound pretty pathetic and immature right now, I know the ps2 broke down for people but the Xbox is no better. I don't like flaming but the Xbox had its share of problems for people, I found a lot of links but I found a surprising forum on engadget about people having to send it to get fixed for free or using their own Cash to get it fixed. And some people got a cheap excuse from Microsoft customer service saying that it couldn't be repaired and having to send in cash to get your system repaired and not having it 100% functional pisses people off a lot. I'm not a fan boy and I don't take sides but if Microsoft made a mistake for some of their console then their no better than what Sony did with their console, so all of you do yourselves a favor and stop debating which console is better. When a console is made the company has to use a lot of money for parts and electronics to make each and every console fully functional, plus the premium edition pack for the Xbox 360 is $399 plus tax which would come up to $400 something dollars so that’s expensive too. Even if the system is expensive it's not going to stop people from buying whatever console they want and more people can still buy it later when the price goes down. Even without a good online service the games on the ps2 were good and some weren't the best but with the new system coming out all these rumors just amount to a bunch of BS if they aren't confirmed by the people themselves.
