PS3 Still Set For a Spring 2006 Launch

Sir Howard Stringer, Chairman and CEO of Sony Corporation outlined details of Sony's proposed PS3 launch strategy in a meeting yesterday. Again all evidence point at a Spring 2006 launch in Japan and a world wide simultaneous release to follow shortly after.

“Yesterday, Sir Howard Stringer, Chairman and CEO of Sony Corporation outlined details of Sony's proposed PS3 launch strategy.Again confirming its release for Spring 2006 - with simultaneous worldwide release currently expected but unconfirmed, his presentation detailed impressive sales figures for other Sony Entertainment products, such as:

PSOne and PS2 have shipped nearly 200 million systems and more than 1.8 billion software units

PSP has shipped (not sold through) over 6 million hardware units

PSP just had the most successful product launch ever in Europe - 185,000 sales in 4 days

He then talked of a proposed group-wide effort to ensure the PS3's success, calling upon the combined efforts of the Entertainment Group - content and applications, the Home Electronics Group - software engineering, Blu Ray disc, optical pickup and drive and finally, The Semiconductor Group - Cell chip and others.

What makes this interesting is the chain events:

Phil Harrison is made Global Exec VP overseeing all of SCE's worldwide output

Sony's development studios are rebranded as a worldwide studio

20,000 jobs are canned across the company, 7,000 of which are in the UK

We can only assume that Stringer's aim here is the same as it was when he commanded a similar streamlining strategy during his time at MGM, where 9,000 jobs and $700 million in annual costs were cut, in aim to improve communication across the group's businesses.

Well that's good to know that it's not going to be a year and a Half away, and most of those people that lost their jobs was probly just temps to get the project done. My company does that, they hire a lot of people just for a short time until their not needed anymore.

Unregistered - QuietMan69 09.22.2005 09:28
Sony realized that it's going to take a beating (marketshare) this time around, so they have already started tighten their belt, 20K laid off, just so they can meet the $399 price point. And they don't have a launch title that is far along enough to be playable at the TGS. Man talk about being cought with your pants down

6 - Warning Signs?
Unregistered - Bored 09.22.2005 09:39
I don't know I have a bad feeling about this. Sony are now basically in the same sort of position that MS were following E3. Probably 6 or 7 months away from the same sort of simultaneous global launch the 360 is about to go through. As far as I know though there hasn't been the same volume of playable code made available to journalists if any. At and following E3 there was a non stop stream of updates and hands on reports for the 360 games but I haven't seen anything from Sony at all. Not all of the reports of the 360 were positive but at least there was some. The more I see of Sony's pre launch strategy the more I feel MS are forcing their hand, possibly against their better judgement. I guess none of us really know what's going on but from a business point of view if you're going to try and put people off buying the 360 cause the PS3 will be here soon at least give the something to wait for rather than the hardware itself. Hell there won't even be any Blueray DVD's in the shops to watch on it at this rate.

7 - You are right!!
Unregistered - QuiteMan69 09.22.2005 09:58
I guess that it is really hard to code for the PS3, why else would they not even have a playable demo, not even from the 1st party developers. Makes you wonder, it starting to look like 2006 is a pipe dream. You get lazy the compition makes you pay

This is great news. I am very glad the PS3 will be coming out on schedule. As far as xbox fanboys go, you faggots are very immature. I visited the affiliate site for xbox looking to see if there was anyone who was dissing the 360, and I didn't find one comment doing so. Apparently the people who play Sony's consoles
don't act like retarded little kids and talk about how much the PS3 will supposedly suck. I own a PS2 and an Xbox, and both systems are good. Both Sony and Microsoft deserve respect, so stop acting like kindergarteners.

#9 right both company's have done a good in their own way so everyone stop with the complaints a head evecutive of bungie who branched off to make wideload games said that ICO was impressive. My guess is that some gaming developers have respect for each other and that's how things should be in my book.

12 - Farewell I'm Off to Sunnier Climes
Unregistered - Bored 09.22.2005 12:08
This will be my last post on these forums bacause as my name suggests I'm quite frankly bored of it all.

In parting I'd just like to outline the precarious balance of the console market as I see it.

Sony while in the dominant position in terms of market share as we speak will be going into this generation with three consoles in production (PSP, PS2 & PS3). All three of these consoles is sold at a loss as is common in the console market. To offset these losses they need to sell a set number of games per console first to break even and then two turn a profit. So far so good but the PSP has so far in it's short life had the lowest game attach rate of any console so already it is proving a drain on their income stream. At the moment the success of PS2 allows them to absorn this. What happens though once the PS2 is phased out? How long will PS2 games continue to sell? Will PSP game sales pick up? Only time will tell. It is with the introduction of the PS3 that things become interesting. Looking at the specs of the PS3 and the market demographic (aggressive early adopters of new technology with high levels of disposable income) they will in my opinion be launching at a premium price point similar the the strategy of the original Xbox. However as MS learned when launching at this price point this demographic is also one of the most media and technology aware and are unlikely to purchase based on hype alone. While CELL and Blueray on paper give PS3 the next gen wow factor unless there is discernable evidence of this advantage straight out of the box Sony may find it's sales well under plan (again see the original launch of the Xbox) and have to reduce the price point accordingly. This then increases the loss suffered per console sold meaning the attach rates have to go up to compensate for this. This is where the other problem with their strategy arises the Blueray format itself. Blueray is an unproven format and as far as I can see the majority of early discs on this format will be PS3 games. This means that any teething problems with the format will affect the availability of PS3 games. It also means that the discs themselves will cost more to manufacture as the economies of scale associated with DVD manufacturing have not yet been achieved with this format. So straight away the manufacturing costs of the games goes up eroding profit margins unless you raise the price point. But raising the price point chokes off demand Catch 22. So following on from my earlier post it is important for Sony to get things right straigh from launch as things can spiral out of control before you know it. Remember having the highest market share only means you have the most to lose.

Sorry for the length of the post but I had to get it off my chest and to all of those just itching to label me an Xbox fanboy as I have been in the past. I wont be here to read your replies and I'm no fanboy just somone with a keen interest in gaming, technology in general and the markets.

Farewell and enjoy the next generation whatever brands on your box.

Shadow of the colossus has turned out to be a great game, however the controls were a slightly flaky but Sony gives game developers a lot of chances to bring out their potential that’s why I like the company.

Team ICO's has a long way to go to make even better games they have to work on the controls in their projects. Guerilla games project Killzone has a great story but the game play was moderately average but their expanding and they have potential since their young and fresh developers. Sony seems to be scouting game developers from across the world and that’s seems to be a good thing because getting fresh talent is good.

Microsoft needs to get fresh developers with potential like Bungie and they need the developers who made F.E.A.R, getting Japanese support from known developers is good but I think it doesn't solve the problem, theirs talent from all over the world.

I can think of a lot of countries that Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo could scout: Canada, America, South Korea, Europe, the Middle East, India, the continent of Africa, Russia, South America, Mexico, Central America, Vietnam, Israel, Jordan, Sri Lanka, Japan too, and so on.

Everything isn't so black and white to the standards of what most people think about a console, sometimes you need to think outside of the box to really get a good fine grip about how things work in the world.

You see people Ubisoft is a French Canadian Company in the province of Quebec and they made great games and a few not so good games like 183 ride or die, but that's not going to stop them from making good games.

Honestly this console war thing is a double edged sword because it's giving game developers a life time chance to bring out their potential little by little, however across every forum I hear this console is better than that console.

People stop the arguing already it's like a festering wound that won't heal and frankly it's disgusting do you really think the game developers for Microsoft and Sony hate each other.

If you love games you should be thanking the game developers because they have to make games and work day after day getting them on the shelves so they can get food on the table for their families and so people can enjoy them.

Nintendo for example needs to pull up their A+ games for their console and listen to what the people want this time, Phoenix Wright the lawyer game on the DS is a pretty original game, which I find pretty good.

Nintendo needs to make more original games like they did with the Super Nintendo and they need to take this whole console thing seriously because the first two star fox games were amazing on the Super Nintendo and N64. Their new remote sized controller is a mystery but hopefully this time around they'll be able to start with a new clean slate in their hands and do a great job this time around.

Sorry for the Long Post but if anyone wants to throw hate messages at me then let them fly because I don't really care about all this console hate crap that everyone’s spouting, frankly it's a waste of energy.

15 - thank you
Maleficus the Great 09.22.2005 13:48
Thank you, #'s 12 and 14. Those were really good points. I believe that if Nintendo wants to stay in the console race, it needs to put out more original and more mature titles. I don't mean the GTA kind of mature, what I am talking about is games like Final Fantasy, MGS, and God of War. Older people are getting fed up with all these Mario sports games and Donkey Kongas. Mario, Donkey Kong, and the other old franchises are fine, but as long as Nintendo keeps making second rate games about them, support for their consoles will dwindle.

Unregistered - silverback 09.22.2005 14:48
I was just thinking that it is a little suspicious that there were no real game play demos at this year's TGS. E3 was about six months from the launch of the 360 and MS showed game play demos, why didn't Sony do the same thing for the PS3 at TGS? The only thing that Sony did was have a booth that showed the MGS trailer over and over again. If we are really looking at a spring launch we ought to be seeing much more game information than we are now. I mean there is almost nothing right now. I'm not bagging on Sony just suspicious about this anouncement.

19 - Last Message
Unregistered - The Truth/Fish Man 09.22.2005 15:36
This is my last message too, I'm sick and tired of this tireless debating, it's true what #12 said Sony will take a loss at first but every system and new electronics device on the market and the planet doesn't make good sales on their first time around it usually takes roughly a couple of months for sales to increase.

Sony and Nintendo are taking their time with their consoles so next year all the test and procedures on their systems hardware and software, will be at optimum efficiency that's what their doing. Seriously if their systems came out now it'll blow up in their faces, their giving the developers time too to adjust to the hardware which is essential for everyone.

Honestly I looked into the matter and the Blue Ray disc's are being tested as we speak in Sweden and other facilities, also the Cell has been worked on for several years by Sony, IBM, and Toshiba. These two new things are not being limited to just a console, their planning to use them in the world for mainstream technology and blue rays are receiving a lot of support.

I'm not judging #12 last message but some of the things he said were flawed, DVD players and Dvd's were expensive at first but now everyone has one, in the coming years for a product to sell, sometimes you have to take a chance or else nothing will change, sometimes people have their up comings and down comings but it doesn't stop them from being successful.

I believe this time around all three systems will be successful; Sony isn't stupid they know about the sales market more than anyone and they'll work things out this year and next year around for their console.

Listen people I'm being realistic about all this I'm not a fanboy or anything I'm putting everything into perspective and looking into the matter, DVD’s were expensive at first but now everyone is using them too. The fact of the matter is that you need to try something new in order to experience something if an individual limits their way of thinking even for me nothing's going to happen.

I play video games for fun and I'm not going to let a company’s history limit my way of thinking people. I think everyone should have an open mind to everything around them; I plan to purchase all three consoles when I have enough money from working. It's true I don't like Bill Gates and Microsoft but the games developers like Bungie and Bioware I respect because they know how to make games, so people stop the madness and wait until the system come out okay.

#27, your an idiot, Business is Business and this is gaming. Sony said it will come out in spring and now they are still saying it. Every business loses money here and there but they make money here and there and they go through cut backs and growth. Thats just the way it works. You 360 fans are just afraid Sony will rip xbox a new butt hole so your saying all this crap. But its ok, Be afraid, you have good reason. Oh and for the retard that said stuff about blu-ray. I read the Article ryu and what you dont seem to know is what exactly Sony is. They may have lost money in electronics but they are much more than that. They are consumer electronics including television, digital cameras and camcorders, mobile audio and personal computers; Semiconductors; Electronic Components; PlayStation; Gaming (online); Music, Movies, and TV Program Content; and there are others. They own alot of companies that dont go by the name Sony. The US Government has laid off far more and is still laying off, but doesnt that mean they are hurting or may go out of business? Nope just restructuring, oh and I know this cause I am a Gov employee. You read one article and think you can get on here and tell people why Sony is doing this and that. You dont know your ass from your head. Take a years and study read hard and read alot and maybe youll learn as much as I have forgotten, which isnt much.

Unregistered - Truth 09.23.2005 02:18
I like how people are trying to make it out as if Sony is tumbling down some pit of despair and are going to be bankrupt soon or something because of a few losses and job cuts. Every company loses profits, case in point, Microsoft's XBOX has not made a profit to date. It's sold for an OVERWHELMING loss in the console market. Yes, like I said, every company takes a loss, but only Microsoft has yet to make a single dollar in profit thus far.

For those saying Blu-Ray is in trouble I point you to UMD. As you can plainly see Sony is extremely well at introducing new mediums into the market ( aside from Betamax ). I have no doubt Sony will do as they did with the UMD format and sign up production labels left and right. So, don't start worrying quite yet on that flopping.

I like XBOX, Gamecube, amd the PS2. Do I own the former two consoles, no, I have my friends if I want to play Halo or RE4 and they have me andmy PS2 if they want to play GT4 or God of War. Do we squabble over which has better graphics and more RAM? Hell no because we each know each system has it's strong and weak points. As does everything else in the known universe. Why the hell would you want to be a fanboy in this day and age when this is quite literally the Golden Age of gaming? I fail to see the logic in only playing one system or staying loyal to one brand when there's so many different sources of entertainment out there. If you only focus on one then you aren't a true gamer, as the same goes with if you only focus on graphics. Sometimes I wonder how gaming has survived for so long with such an abundance of closed minded little kids. Then I remember for every one of you simpletons posting, "EAT SHIT XBOY YOU BILL COCK LOVING SHIT TURD!" there's a thousand more intelligent, open-minded gamers out there.

All I'm trying to say is open your god damn minds a little and try to enjoy gaming before fucktards like Hilary Clinton or Jack Thompson have their way with us and ban them entirely. It's people who say the aforementioned profanity laced comment that make these anit-gamers have material to work with. If you're a Playstation fanboy then try Halo, Panzer Dragoon Orta or Fable, if you're a XBOX fanboy or Gamecube fanboy play God of War, MGS3 or Zone of the Enders 2. It's not possible to hate EVERY game a system has, there has to be something you want to play. So take a chill pill, go rent the system you don't have at a local Blockbuster or borrow it from a friend, rent or borrow a few games and sit down and play. Be a gamer, not a hater. As haters always lose in the long run.

37 - Blu-Ray
Unregistered - AV Fan 09.23.2005 05:09
Speaking as an AV fan neither HD DVD or Blu-Ray is losing "steam or ground" to the other as neither really had any to start with. There are many reasons for this but mainly no one want's to take sides in a war the end result may be the pleasure of having to buy titles you already own on DVD for the third time if you back the loser.

The general consensus seems to be that future proofing your system at the moment is to risky and it's better to wait 2 or 3 years until a clear leader has emerged before backing a format.

You may want to deny it but Sony is posting losses that would be a lot higher were it not for the success of the Playstation brand. They have also likely deferred the R&D costs for Blu-Ray thus further reducing the losses posted this year.

Sony can't afford for Blu-Ray not to be the dominant format of the next generation which is why it is trying to generate some momentum for it by including it in the PS3. It isn't doing it because it loves Playstation owners and it wants them to have the absolute best next generation experience it is doing it for purely commercial reasons.

So now the ongoing success and reputation of the Playstation brand are linked to the successful implememtation of Blu-Ray and vice versa. It's a gamble it might pay off or it might not. But I'm a gambler too and I'm going to call Sony's bluff and see if they can do well at their initial price point. If not and the price needs readjusting I'll be there with a cheaper console and an I told you so expression.

Peace.

You may think its HD, but the fact is, its compressed = lower quality than real HD, a bit like MP3 compaired to original CD quality.

I thought the whole point of blu-ray was that it enough storage space so you wouldn't have to compress data.

I thought you meant you already have HD useing a DVD drive, yes blu-ray holds more and uses less compression, but still uses compression, as a non compressed film would be larger than 200gig at least.

I dont think we will see uncompressed films until the holographic drive becomes available.

54 - BIG NEWS
Unregistered - Edward R. Murrow 09.23.2005 16:22
Sony Corp Chief Executive Howard Stringer on Thursday called on the ailing electronics and entertainment giant to "be like the Russians defending Moscow against Napoleon" as he unveiled a broad restructuring plan.

But many analysts say Sony remains a company besieged by rivals that have outflanked it in the Digital Age. Cutting 10,000 jobs, closing manufacturing plants and trimming product lines will do little, they say, if Sony can't develop the sort of innovative gadgets that were once its stock in trade.

In his first major action since taking over Sony in June, Stringer acknowledged that nimbler rivals had eaten away at Sony's dominance in key businesses such as televisions and portable audio.

And he pledged to break down the "silos" of business divisions that have existed for much of the company's 59 years as a consumer electronics icon and galvanize its vast resources to once again create "champion products."

"Sony operates today with a fragmented structure that has impeded communication and success," he told a crowd of 500 analysts and journalists in a Tokyo hotel ballroom. Although the company makes movies as well as the devices that play them, it has been largely unsuccessful at making its divisions work together.

Sony, renowned for its Walkman music players and Trinitron television sets, has been overtaken in recent years by low-cost Chinese TVs and Apple Computer Inc.'s iPod music players.

Because electronics account for about 70% of Sony's $67 billion in annual revenue, Stringer described turning around the division as "our No. 1 priority."

To achieve that, Stringer plans to cut 6.6% of Sony's global workforce, shutter 11 of its 65 manufacturing plants and divest the company of real estate and stock assets valued at about ID="MainNewsBlogCom".1 billion. In addition, Stringer also promised to kill or scale back 15 of the 130 product categories and 20% of the about 3,000 models it currently sells.

Stringer declined to identify which businesses or products Sony would phase out, but analysts said the company might give more detail Sept. 30 when it holds another news conference in New York.

The restructuring, projected to cost ID="MainNewsBlogCom".9 billion and be completed by March 2008, is expected to trim annual expenses by 200 billion yen, or ID="MainNewsBlogCom".8 billion.

For the current fiscal year, Sony said, restructuring charges will result in a loss of $90 million, contrasted with the company's previous forecast of a $90-million profit.

Sony's shares lost HAVABlog.02 to $33.95 on the New York Stock Exchange, reflecting skepticism of analysts who questioned how Stringer's plan differed from previous efforts to revive Sony.

The most recent, dubbed Transformation 60, eliminated 20,000 jobs in the last two years.

"We all went through this more than a year ago," said Richard Doherty, an analyst with Envisioneering Group. "There isn't a radical difference between what was said today and what was said last year under a different chairman and CEO."

The Welsh-born Stringer, Sony's first non-Japanese CEO, faced similar doubts in Tokyo.

But Stringer arrives not just with the advantage of his own successful track record as the head of Sony's U.S. operations but also insulated by the staggering success in Japan of Nissan boss Carlos Ghosn, the first foreign chief executive to troubleshoot a crippled Japanese corporate icon back to health.

Citing Apple's example of linking its iPod player and its iTunes music store, Stringer said, "Apple would not have sold its devices if they didn't have their agreements with music companies. Sony did not do that, even though we own the music business."

He pointed to the company's PlayStation Portable hand-held game device as a model of cross-company cooperation. Although the PSP is primarily a game console, it also plays movies and music. And its ability to connect to the Internet gives Sony a platform to sell digital entertainment on the go.

Analysts said Stringer had the right idea.

"Creating a seamless link between the device and the service is crucial," said Mike McGuire, an analyst with Gartner Inc. "That's what Apple has done, and that's what Sony wants to do with the PSP. Consumers are nothing if not foragers of digital content. With the PSP, you can connect to the Internet, browse and download content other than games."

Making that work, though, will be difficult.

"Previous management understood what needed to be changed, but they were unable to make it happen," said Mark Stahlman, an analyst with Caris & Co. "To actually make these changes is a massive challenge. It can't be done quickly. There will be people who will resist. There's no avoiding a good deal of internal conflict."

Analysts applauded Stringer's focus on the highly profitable PlayStation division. The company is planning to launch its next-generation PlayStation 3 console in the spring.

"Given the fact that PS3 means much more than just video gaming, it's going to be important to all their media studios," said P.J. McNealy, an analyst at American Technology Research. "This comes at a time when all internal content — whether or not it's music, movies or games — will be important to the PS3. It's the promise of the vertical, which Sony has had for many years but has never really delivered on."

Stringer also targeted the company's television business, which saw sales drop 21% in the quarter ended June 30 as low-cost competitors grabbed market share in the fast-growing flat-panel business. The poor showing contributed to a $330-million loss in the company's electronics unit that quarter.

Sony promised that its TV business would be profitable by March 2007 and to deliver a 4% overall profit margin in its electronics business by March 2008. But analysts said the targets might be unrealistic.

"The forecast seems optimistic because so many factors are out of Sony's control," Doherty, of Envisioneering, said.

"They can't control retail prices, for example. Today, Sony's TVs are one-third less than they were a year ago. And still, their products are 40% more expensive than the other brands. That's a disaster. And there's no indication that things will get better."

Others were more willing to give Sony the benefit of the doubt.

"Basically, the direction they laid out is good," said Mitsuhiro Osawa, an analyst with Mizuho Investors Securities in Tokyo. "This Christmas will be the first big test, with products like televisions and the new Walkman. We'll see in January if they've cleared the first hurdle."

55 - someone said Blu-ray didnt have much support, Wrong, they have most of the support.
Patrick 09.23.2005 18:40
I didnt even bring it up this time but since it came up.Movie Studios currently supporting the Blu-Ray disc format include:
Sony Pictures, MGM, Columbia Pictures, Tri star Pictures, United Artist, Orion Pictures, Screen Gems, and Triumph Films (all owned by Sony)
Sony also distributes films for Destinantion Films and Revolution Studios.
also supporting Blu-ray is Hollywood Pictures Home Video, Touchstone Home Entertainment, Miramax Home Entertainment, Dimension Home Video, Buena Vista Motion Pictues, Walt Disney Pictures and Television, (all owned by Walt Disney)
Lions Gate Films and Artisan Entertainment (owned by Lions gate)
and Twentieth Century Fox all support Blu-ray. Now Electronic companies supporting blu-ray includes: Apple, Dell, Mitsubishi, Thompson, CyberLink, Hitachi, HP, JVC, LG, Nero, Panasonic, Philips, Pioneer, Samsung, Sharp, Sonic, Sony, TDK, Yamaha and Verbatim and there are many others these are just the major ones. Also Universal Music group is supporting Blu-ray. Universal is the worlds leading music Company. Now, at the recent and world's largest consumer electronics and IT show Blu-ray had lots of companies showing their products including CyberLink, DTS, Hitachi, HP, JVC, LG, Nero, Panasonic, Philips, Pioneer, Samsung, Sharp, Sonic, Sony, TDK, Yamaha and Verbatim. Hd-dvd had 2, yep thats right 2 companies which were toshiba and nec and the toshiba hd-dvd player barely worked. Hd-dvd has now been pushed back to spring of 06 and many say wont even make it out. SO HD-DVD is as said above LOSING STEAM AND LOSING GROUND IN A VERY BAD WAY. Some of you wont even know when the switch from dvd to the hybrid dvd/bd-dvd will take place since JVC was showcasing their BD/DVD hybrid media (33.5GB), which was developed to ease the transition from DVD to Blu-ray by creating a disc that will play in both BD players and DVD players. The hybrid disc is basically a single-layer BD-ROM (25GB) and a dual-layer DVD-ROM (8.5GB) in the same disc, which can be read in both players as the Blu-ray layer is transparent to the red laser used in a conventional DVD player. Any questions?

#55 I think they were talking about customer support. You can have all the movie producers in the world on your side but if no one buys your player you won't make any profit on it.

I sometimes wonder if the people on this forum actually read the posts they reply to. I get the feeling if they can't find something to counter what was said they just twist it around until it fits something they have found.

Don't be so defensive and argumentative everyone there's room for other viewpoints than your own and copying press releases that everyone has read anyway won't change peoples minds.

Seeing as how microdicks said it, I am not surprise that it says 360 is better. Oh and thats old anyway, new real info shows just the opposite. PS3 rules!

#60 You are a retard... again... and that is putting it lightly, I DARE you to quote the opening paragraphs of that article IGN wrote. But SINCE you are a retard I can't count on you to do even that, so I'll do it for you:

"We decided to put this Microsoft-provided information up undigested. Thus, enclosed is a Microsoft-made comparitive analysis. We have not altered, added, or tinkered with the data. We have not interpreted the specs. We have cut and pasted this information from the email into our site and formatted it. Make of it what you will, but be clear we know Microsoft has clearly slanted this info, and we're not endorsing it, just printing their version. There is a difference."

Notice the line that says "Microsoft has clearly slanted this info" also note this was back at e3 and the ps3 dev kits were just being released... hmm I smell bullshit! Forgive my being so straightfoward but somebody had to do it. Peace!

BLU RAY IS POINTLESS AND JUST ONE OF THE MANY THINGS SONY IS THROWING IN TO MAKE THE PS3 SEEM NEXT GEN. YOUR GOING TO END UP PAYING 500-600 to get the ps3, hard drive, and other accesories. PS3 people will suffer the bad choice of getting blu ray and blue tooth. Both seem cool and revolutionary but they don't offer anything better to the consumer but a futuristic title. Who cares if you may have to switch a hd dvd disk, it's still way cheaper. PS3 is not worth a couple hundred more for their small increase in performance.

64 - Nobody really knows yet....
Nodieza 09.30.2005 07:00
No offense dude but untill the pricing is revealed your comment is irrelevent. But at least sony is offering ONE OPTION, unlike 360 who is trying to screw ppl over. Imagine this, Mommy buys Johnny the cheaper 360 for christmas because it's cheaper (duh) but then: oh no Johnny needs hard drive, johhny needs this and that and all the other "upgrades" Mommy is angry now because if she had known, she would've bought the exspensive one and saved money (sounds redundent ne?)... I just think it's stupid that's all but ppl are right ps3, xbox 360 both beasts of systems but the xbox games don't appeal towards me.. it's american action games, sure they're expanding their horizon with Rpg's etc.... but hey if you like that then thats your schtick and cool for you man. Peace! P.S. Blu ray is totally worth the extra money just for the scratch resistant coating it has. Gonna be cool. Not as exspensive as you think either.

65 - Are you Thinking?
Unregistered - PS3Player 09.30.2005 16:34
"Bluray disc is pointless" shut the fuck up you sound like a mentally rearted guy. If it wasn't for the PS2 DVD would not have been so popular, so think Sony for that, and by the way since it's so early, it might not seem that the Bluray is beneficial, but it will be in the long run. Think before you post your nonsense on the web.

66 -
Unregistered - Anonymous Coward 10.01.2005 00:25
Alright first off realize that ps3 is not cheap or equivilant to the 360. As rumored and somewhat proven the console, controller, and cables/accessories will be around 400 dollars, no hard drive, no headset. Ok then we have it's counterpart from Micrsoft that includes all that ps3 does plus what I said it didn't. The hard drive that sony will not have is going to cost +80-100, and that's for the majority of serious and mediocre players. And as suspected the ps3 will have little difference in graphical improvement and general performance for their more expensive console. Sony online will be blown out of the water by xbox 360. I will admit an almost definate graphics superiority from sony but it is not worth the 100 more dollars. Also when sony is clearly beaten in other console areas. Also what kind of games could the ps3 offer americans but MGS4 and sports games. Before you choose which console make sure you weigh which games would be the best for you because the graphics difference will be almost unnoticable. PLEASE BEFORE BUYING TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THAT MAYBE YOU DIDN'T HITCH YOUR WAGON TO THE BEST COMPANY.

67 -
Unregistered - Anonymous Coward 10.01.2005 10:14
As long as you hitch it to the PS3 you can be sure its the BEST. PS2 games far out numbered the xbox and far outsold the xbox. I like Xbox but have no doubt that PS3 will be superior. Beside Microsoft doesnt even know what they are talking about, The said some untruths about Blu-ray, so Dell and Hewlett Packard (the 2 largest computer makers in the world) had to set the record straight and put Microsoft and intel in their places and told how superior Blu-ray is compared to hd-dvd. Its a shame microsoft isnt interested in giving people the very best.

JAPANESE GAMES SUCK SO MUCH, hack and slash games that make you do combos is retarted and repetative. People who play those games should be ashamed of themself. Exspecially when outcast anti-social nerds who believe that wear japanese clothes. DONT GET THE PS3 JUST BECAUSE IT CAN PERFORM SLIGHTLY BETTER THAN THE XBOX 360. XBOX 360 GAMES ARE ENOUGH REASON TO GET IT.

BLU RAY OFFERS NO CONCEIVABLE BENEFIT WORTH THE COST....SONY IS AN IDIOT. WHO CARES IF YOU CAN STORE 3-2 TIMES MORE INFORMATION ON BLU RAY. WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO PUT 4 GAMES ON ONE BLU RAY DISC. YOU GUYS DON'T LOOK AT THE USEFULLNESS FACTOR JUST THINK THAT SONY WILL LEAD YOU TO THE TOP WITH EXPENSIVE PARTS, BUT WILL ONLY JACK OF THE PRICE.

70 -
Unregistered - Anonymous Coward 10.02.2005 11:56
Listen just cause you cant afford something doesnt mean its bad. Blu-ray is and will be awesome. All the extra space will be filled in the future, Things are changing quickly with technology and graphics, so the space will be needed. Besides until Sony offically gives their price you have no idea what it will cost, so just keep your mouth shut till then.

Having loyalty to a company, like Sony, is as dumb as being a trusting German citizen during the 1930-40s. Think about let yourself experience new products instead of blindly following Sony because you used their products before. This is more prevalent with Nintendo outcasts.

I know I've said a million and one times the 360 is superior to the PS3, but recently I've done some studying on the 2 systems and it seems that the PS3 is better than the 360. Besides being technically superior in almost every way the PS3 also has a far larger customer base than does the 360 and only a moron would argue that. Also, if you realy take a good look at 360 game and Xbox games, you'll see that the 360 is not really nexgen, but instead an Xbox 1.5 of sorts. As of this weekend I have gotten a refund on my 360 preorder and am patiently waiting for PS3 preorders to start. I'm strongly advising you, the Xbox 360 is not what you think it will be. Cancel your orders if possible.
