The Japanese tech site PC Watch has just posted an interview with Masayuki Chatani, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.’s Chief Technology Officer. What makes this interview so interesting is his vision on how PS3 games will really set themselves apart from the games we play today by utilizing the true power of the CELL for generating truly dynamic game characters and game worlds. As I wrote in my article, The Future of Gaming”, imagine a game where all character animations are calculated in real-time, instead of pre-recorded sequences that are used in today’s games. How would this change games? Well, just imagine a version of Tekken where you would never see two identical punches. The power, performance, and speed of the punch would all be calculated in real-time. You can read the full interview below, however it is translated through Babelfish so there will be some strange sentences and typos.
Q. You must have a good reason to add 2 HDMI transmitters, what usage do you expect for dual HDMI? A. It’s purely because we wanted to add them. Since multi display expands gaming like a horizontally wide dual display or an extended game screen, we’ve wanted to add it at any cost. You don’t have to connect 2 HDTVs, a small sub-display is enough. Q. Does HDMI contain S/PDIFx6? A. Yes it’s totally compliant to the HDMI spec and audio output is assigned to it. Q. This is related to the OS too, when you have a communication tool (such as IM) in the firmware and play games talking with your buddies by the same tool, can you use a sub-display even in games that don’t support dual display? A. Yes. A communication tool is embedded in the firmware of course. You want to communicate while gaming, don’t you? You can popup a chat window in the main screen or in the sub screen. You know PSP has much more functions in the OS than PS2 does. Likewise, the PS3 system will be extended and evolved one, in which a communication tool via internet is included. Q. Judging from the message that you recommend PS3 as a digital media center, it’s very natural, in a sense, that it has an SD card slot. But as a default feature, in a Sony-branded product? It’s unprecedent, isn’t it? A. To begin with we expect use with a digital camera as you can see from the fact that it has a CF slot too. Also, SD card is in many devices including mobile phones. Users will be annoyed if media have to be converted except for memsticks. Of course you want to put save data in all media types, don’t you? Q. I can see you need those 3 slots to support digital cameras, but is it possible to put music purchased via EMD onto an SD card by this SD slot? A. It’s dependent on DRM rather than on the slot types. If you need Magic Gate, you have to use a memstick. All media types including memstick are equivalent except for such aspects. Q. In the spec sheet it has remote-control via IP network, what kind of usage is expected? A. Controlling a game via IP, or controlling PS3 via an IP-based remote controller. Q. It’s supposed to play BD-ROM video format, is it implemented on sale? A. Yes of course. The video application format is not finalized but almost done and HD video decoding is very easy for us. Interactive functions will also be implemented in software, just after it’s finalized. Q. The published PS3 diagram doesn’t contain a sound chip. A. This time it has no sound chip because Cell can generate all sounds. In the leaf demo in the event we create sound data by running a code to simulate sound of a leaf in a wind then assign it to 5.1 channels to synthesize surround sound. CELL has abundant processing power and can do sound processing with ease so it doesn’t need a dedicated chip to create a sound wave in the DSP style. Q. Gigabit Ethernet connectors are listed as In x 1 + Out x 2, what does it mean? Does it have router function and are they for WAN/LAN? Or do you use a special connection to connect multiple PS3s together? A. It has no router function. It’s supposed to be a switching hub internally, but I don’t know about the meaning of In/Out frankly so will answer about it at the next opportunity. Of course you can connect PS3s together. After it’s on sale, some will make a supercomputer by connecting many PS3s. Apparently Sony Picture Entertainment is considering to use PS3 in a rendering farm for movies. Q. For the connectors or the design, it looks very AV-oriented. It’s based on the PS2 design and just rounded, but when put horizontally it has the atmosphere of B&O (Bang & Olufsen) in the top-loading era. Is it strongly meant as one of AV products? A. When TVs in home get HD, we recognize PS3 as the standard in the HD era. Thus we made it to be able to play all 12cm-disc formats. Q. Considering power of CELL and GPU, the case size, and the internal power unit, it seems tough to manage heat. How is the noise? A. Since quietness is very important, our hardware team is trying to make it as quiet as possible. Of course it has all power-saving efforts in the chip-level. Though it’s not compared with PS2 yet, I’d like to make it more quiet in the final product. Q. The demo in the press conference suggested the possibility that physics simulation can change games. Though it has the aspect that it’s done to utilize the idiosyncrasy of CELL, I think whether PS3 can be an attractive game console or not is dependent on how it can achieve in this area. A. In PS3, in addition to the full HD output, the rendering quality per se is very high. But the more high-def and the more real it gets, the more wierd it’s felt when it animates with a strange manner that’s not experienced in a real life. For example it’s very uncomfortable if skin contours don’t change naturally when facial expression is changed in rendering a face through which even cutaneous sensasion is conveyed. It’s only an example, but on all occasions we have to actualize natural animation proportionally to improvement in graphics. In games it backfires if graphics improves while AI/simulation stays the same. Q. To which part of physics simulation does parallel processing by 7 SPEs contribute? A. So far, a simulation code in games had handled an in-game character as one rigid body. From now on more soft things such as human, plants and fluid can be represented more naturally. When you represent one character, you can generate natural animation and natural facial expression by spliting it into multiple parts and calculating them separately. Likewise in a car-race game each part can have a different behavior calculation. For example, how a car moves when left and right wheels are on different kinds of surface can be solved by calculating behavior of each part. Q. Physics simulation includes games such as Gran Turismo in which simulation precision per se is connected to the value of the game and games in which it’s just an assistant. How easy will it be for developers to use physics simulation as a tool? A. Of course there’ll be a vendor that can implement and tune simulation code. It always surprises us, entertainment software developers have very high skill. No matter how difficult some processing seems, they come up with a very fast code. One point is to supply a tuning tool to make use of their skill. The other point is, since there are middlewares for physics simulation, it can be easily implemented with them. In the case of PS2 it had taken some time until they got usable, but this time Havok and others are already in. For example, automatic generation of natural terrain or cloth simulation code are supplied. Q. Is the PS3 development environment different from that of PS2? A. Basically it doesn’t change very much. The target hardware, the regular development environment, and tools. The difference is Cg compiler and tools, OpenGL/ES support by the change to nVIDIA. Q. Is it the same kind of approach in performance tuning? A. Since we have performance analyzer tools for cache usage and bus usage that game developers have evaluated so far, we extend them further. We concentrate on tools to extract programmers power. Also, CELL has the function to emit processor usage statistics as a log. By using this, you can know detailed usage statistics of each core in CELL. Q. In regard to PS3, because few devkits are supplied, I hear 2 kinds of opinions. Some expect it’d be hard to extract performance and others are surprised as they can extract performance very easily in an actual development. How is it in the real development scene? A. To be honest, since it has so much margin in performance, we’ve heard no such feedback that it’s difficult to develop on it. Naturally it’s different from single-core programming, but it doesn’t add to man hours required for game development that much. I repeat it but entertainment programmers have tremendous ability. For example we showed the demo that renders London City, it’s not rendered in the GPU but the CELL does lighting and texture processing then outputs it to the frame buffer. Even without GPU, only CELL can create good enough 3D graphics. Q. A few years ago it seemed you were lost for how you use CELL in augmenting entertainment factors. Have you found the answer? A. As I told you here, physics calculation, simulation, and AI. The better graphics gets, the more often you see unnaturalness. To extract reality that matches graphics quality, programming abstract animation is not enough already. CELL exists to represent the worldview closer to nature. In future, expression in games will evolve into the different level from until now. Source: PC Watch and GameGeekNews Add Comment Nodieza 09.18.2005 09:52 wow, i think that this is more proof than ever that sony has the upper hand in gaming, even if (and i mean IF) they have worse graphicsb they still take home the gold with CELL, it's truly a beast, no way standard multicore processors can handle those tasks of a real time animation rendering, you know what all this mean? killzone trailer is even more so POSSIBLE, everyone was complaining that there were too many different animations and now they know that it CAN be pulled off. has it already been pulled off? doubt it. will it? most certainly. and for all those still complaining on the mgs4 trailer, I can't wait till the game comes out in the distant future so I can say "Ha told ya so, it's as awsome as the trailer was back on sept. 16, 2005" Peace out! Unregistered - Anonymous 09.18.2005 10:58 Sony better change there specs and put in 512mb of ram b/c with out it, all this cell stuff means nothing. Unregistered - Fish Man 09.18.2005 11:11 So basicly the Cell chip thing is a game graphics enhacer that's does psychics sound and so on. That's good, It seem souny though this through so they could work out the kinks when the ps3 comes out. Unregistered - Fish Man 09.18.2005 11:13 #2 be quiet your clueless on how it works as much as everyone else is right now. Unregistered - Anonymous Coward 09.18.2005 12:46 PS3 already has 512MB of ram you fool, its got 256MB of GDDR3 @ 700Mhz ram and 256MB of even quicker Rambus Ram, I think it runs at 2.4gig, so 256 + 256 = 512 and the ram can be shared. X360's Ram has a total of 512MB and it all runs at 700Mhz and is all the slower GDDR3 type Ram. Furious 09.18.2005 13:07 #2 Since you like discussing stats that you have new clue about... Let's discuss how the developers can utilize the cell and the PS3 platform. The current PS2 hardware is using roughly a 300 MHZ processor and the developers are capable of creating AAA titles like God of war, GT4 running at 1080i! & MGS2/3 and many more titles that contain high quality visuals. If these developers managed to squeeze this power out of a pathetic console with the "emotion engine" imagine what they can do with a "Cell" CPU with 7SPEs with 3.2GHz of power each... I do have a computer science degree, but I'm not an engineer so I can't speak directly to the hardware power, but any idiot can understand this is a tremendous jump in power. The developers are already familiar with developing with less imagine what they can do with more... Honestly the bar has been set for PS3 and it's extremely high, most hardcore gamers will expect a lot from the first batch of titles for the system. If Sony can't deliver on the tech demos and trailers shown today most hardcore gamers will not buy the console at launch, they will wait for a price drop. Also, casual gamers may have sticker shock when they see the $400+ price tag. Sony has a huge mountain to climb and as a gamer I hope they pull it off. Unregistered - Anonymous Coward 09.18.2005 13:32 Each of the SPE's has 256Kb of cache, which is seperate from the main Ram (256MB) and Graphics Ram (256MB). Even though the concept of the Emotion Engine is still there, useing a power PC solution with seperate SPE's doesnt seem as powerfull as if they had stuck with the original design and upgraded it, but anyway, they still won another award for most impressive processor, like they did with Emotion engine, when it was first shown. Unregistered - Anonymous Coward 09.18.2005 14:12 The reason they squeezed what they did out of PS2, with MGS3 and GT4 is because of the specialized engine's they used, GTA4 will be useing a specialized engine, which takes full advantage of the hardware. A non specialized engine produces good results, but not as good as an engine which has bee programmed to the metal for a specific console. M$ have their own people who have said in the past, this wont run on PS2 and they are right, but what they said was also misleading, they had used a specialized engine, basicaly its like pollyphony digital saying GT4 cannot run on Xbox and that would be true also as it uses a specialized engine. You cant port a game from a specialized engine, so anything made on one for its respected platform, will not run on other consoles. Unregistered - ninja0327 09.18.2005 14:57 sounds good news from sony and those who are going to buy ps3.but i wouldn't celebret yeat becuase non of the next-gen console have shown their true capabiltiies.that includes ps3, xbox360, and nintedo revolution.x360 is coming out first and their have an advantage. only six months ahead of sony but it may have major impact espially that they have strong lineup of games.and i don't expect to see the true power of the xbox360 at luanch but on the day sony luanches its ps3.sony will come showing off its new beast. but if its expensive no one is gonna buy exccept those who are despret. it may have good games but if their not epressive its gonna lose and if the games look identical to the x360 (in graphics)gaems then they have wasted all their preciuos time about their hardware and then comes nintedo the silent one, well i don't have much to say becuase they haven't released any ifor on their games and hardware. their not going anywere as people hoped they would so all look equal now expect their true power in 2008 enough said. Unregistered - Anonymous Coward 09.18.2005 15:31 I wouldnt bet on it, almost everyone I know is waiting for PS3, some people seem to be sticking by X360, but that is their choice. Me personaly I would go with PS3, its not hard to realize that I will be playing GT5, GTA4, MGS4 and a number of other top titles, all exclusive to PS3, what do people have to look forward to on X360? another Halo disapointment? and a new live experience with which to play no decent games on? I dont know why people with the thought of buying X360 dont go with a PC upgrade instead, PC will have almost all the games coming to PC anyway, due to the similar programing with XNA, so whats the point? My PC is up to date, I can already run stuff X360 can run. Furious 09.18.2005 15:51 #9 I agree with your PS3 comments concerning exclusive titles, but your 360 views sound flawed... The 360 at launch will eclispe any current PC hardware, we should not see anything on the same level until 2006... I agree a lot of titles on the 360 will appear on PC, but a lot of hardcore gamers that own PS2s are looking to upgrade now, the PS2 is really dated hardware. The hardcore PS2 gamers will upgrade to 360 for HDTV support and still plan on buying the PS3. All of the current XBox players will naturally upgrade. If the PS3 does not have an impressive launch line up (I doubt any of the AAA titles mentioned in your post will be launch titles)the hard core gamers will take a let's wait and see approach, because they will be content with their 360 hardware. If MS decides to drop the price on the 360 and have a strong library of titles it will give casual gamers something to think about. I doubt the PS3 will launch for less that $400 bucks. If MS plays their cards right Sony could have some huge hurdles to jump when they launch their console. Also, you have Nintendo with thier new controller and this could take some of the casual gamer market share (the let's wait and see approach). The next Gen war is far from over, hell it has not even started... Unregistered - Anonymous Coward 09.18.2005 16:11 Where is the true next gen support? useing a dated DVD drive is yours and Ms idea of takeing next gen to the HD era, with compression technology, which actualy runs slower and is not as high def as the real thing (HD-DVD/Blu-Ray) X360 or should I say M$ have took you for a game, they must think because you play games you can be convinced X360 is a true next gen system. Furious 09.18.2005 16:27 #12 I want to start by saying I plan on buying ALL the next gen consoles... You missed my point, I'm saying that Sony has to be on their game if they want to keep their current market share in the industry. The 360 is a powerful console open you eyes and look at the specs. I'm not an engineer and I doubt you are, but looking at the stats will at least let you know the consoles are a huge leap forward in processing power and memory. The 360 is truely a next gen console it supports High Def resolution and just because it does not support HDDVD or Blueray is a poor approach. I think we can all agree that the PS3 will be more powerful it should be considering it will launch 8 -12 months after the 360 launch. The first XBox was almost twice as powerful as the PS2, but it still lost the war... In MY OPINION hardcore PS2 gamers are considering the 360 and Sony will have to prove that they should wait or ensure them the PS3 is a must have console even if you own the 360. It's not an easy position to be in, look at the current war and XBox had to take that position and lost. I still believe the PS3 will have the marketshare globally, but the 360 may gain ground in the US. Unregistered - Anonymous Coward 09.18.2005 16:43 I know you want X360 to do well, hut the problem is, most of the Euoropean market, have voted for PS3, Japan are also wanting PS3, I believe (and I will post original figurs if required) X360 was shown as only haveing 2% of market share next gen in japan, with roughly 20% of Europeans wanting an X360. The faceplates are no super natural power, when it comes to PS3. Unregistered - ninja0327 09.18.2005 17:16 those statistics are useless. sony is under pressure that they might lose to microsoft.ms is serious about this next-gen console period .sony may have 62% of the globe market but if they don't have goood games to keep it at the top they might be in real truoble. the comfortable people now is nintendo becuase they know they systemm is gonna be successfull even if they not at the top.concerning those europeans who show strong support for the ps3 non of them own the system to make judgemnts ,they will change their mind once they the see xbox 360 on luanch. seriosly in 2006 you gonna buy resident evil 5 at whatever store. the first thing you gona do is look at the price of the ps3 and x360 surely you gonna go with x360 because its cheap and the game version are the same.THE battle HAS JUST BEGAN. Unregistered - Anonymous Coward 09.18.2005 17:47 I'm gonna look at what the games are like coming to the system, not what the system is like, PS3 has what I want, I'm not bothered about Xbox 360 live or whatever its called, I just want to play good games like: GT5, GTA4, MGS4, anything to do with naughty Dog and anything to do with Insomniac, from what I've seen, insomniac (creators of ratchet and clank) are makeing a FPS'er, and it looks quite good, I'm just waiting now to see what Naughty Dog are gonna bring to the table. Unregistered - Anonymous Coward 09.18.2005 18:00 It wasnt Sony who released those figures, you see what I mean, straight away Sony are to blame, why? because of the truth from the actual market place itself? 2% Japan 20% Europe that is going on actual questionaires within the terrotories, US wasn't in the servey, simply because most US people would have opted for the X360, just because it supported a format which is about to die, DVD. Unregistered - Anonymous Coward 09.18.2005 20:13 I'll be waiting for PS3. As long as I can play my NCAA/Madden and a few FPS, I'm happy. I'm also hoping for a Command-&-Conquer since it will also have a keyboard/mouse combo. M$ is scared to death they may lose again--which looks very possible, as I bet a lot of folks will wait for PS3, unless they're die-hard XBOX fans--not a bad thing, but I prefer Sony specifically against M$. I'm hoping the Linux for PS3 includes a basic Office suite, so you can browse & do all basic things someone needs a PC for, without Windows Vista & the upgrade price. I think the average user is tired of the Windows update cycle--they want to turn it on and have it work, with the functionality they need--multimedia, games, basic Office functions. I can see not upgrading my PC or Windows version for a very long time. And THAT scares M$ to death! XBOX fanboys, don't even bother--write back when you're old enough to drive. Unregistered - Anonymous Coward 09.18.2005 20:40 PS3 in a big hole, they've nothing much to show for so far. I'm not going to wait for something that exist only on payper and big talk. It's gonna be weak and feeble when it comes out. Sony can't use window because they don't own it. If they want to use it, sony might need to pay royalty for MS or something, funny situation. Funny how some of you hate MS, but you end up using MS products. Good for MS. Unregistered - Anonymous Coward 09.18.2005 21:03 I'm not useing M$ products, I much prefere Linux, same as M$ when they have a seriouse worm problem, yes M$ hid behind Linux servers until they sorted all the shitty worms out, M$ are excelent, wonder what they would have done if they managed to kick Linux out before the worms attacked? Unregistered - Master 09.18.2005 21:11 Quite simply, that GPU for the Xbox 360 is going to have to be something if it's going to beat the RSX (the GPU for the PS3). It's still in development, and already posting core clock speed faster than the Geforce 7800, the fastest GPU out there. Never mind that the CELL can proccess most graphics by it's self. Plus the RSX is hooked up directly to the CELL, a connecting that will allow it to prosseses graphics with extreme ease. The nature of the CELL's SPE's allows it to accelarate prosseses such as graphics, and it is completely campatible with all bit speeds up to 64. Can you say the same for the 360's proccesor? I think not! The CELL works in ways that have not been seen before in the computer industry. If you want a small comparison of it's power... the CELL's prossesing power is 256 GFLOPS ( if you don't know what that means, it's ok to say that the higher the better). The 500th computer on the top 500 supercomputer list has a full prossesing power of 800 GFLOPS, that's with GPU and all. This might look one sided, but it really is. I'm actually a hardcore Xbox gammer, all the way. But I look at the facts, and the PS3 has got the 360 beaten in every avenue. The only factor that's left up for grabs is the quality of the games made. The PS3 has an early advantage with the better system, and if they take there time to make the first wave of game, then they'll have it in the bag. For information that's easy to understand on the CELL prossesor, go to www.blachford.info/computer/Cell/Cell0_v2.html Unregistered - Anonymous Coward 09.18.2005 21:23 To # 19 again, I thought I'd post a little more just incase you weren't aware of M$. M$ was in court with Linux because they didnt agree on them giving their operating system away for free, basicaly they were trying to put Linux out of buisiness by takeing them to court (court costs cost a bomb) M$ came accross alot of worm attacks to its windows users and had to hide behind Linux survers (Great stuff they try put them out of buisiness then rely on them to protect them) until they made a patch for the problem to protect themselves and their customers (service pack 2 was born) I dont think I need to explain any further. Furious 09.18.2005 22:42 Very informative article, I wonder how long it will take for developers to truely harness the multicore multi threading enviornment, only time will tell... Based on the goals and info from team Kojima regarding MGS4 perhaps sooner than later. Unregistered - Silverback 09.19.2005 00:01 When it comes right down to it what is going to make the biggest difference I think in the future sales of the consoles is the price. We can talk all day long about how much more powerful the on paper specs are for the PS3 but the most powerful system is not going to sell if the price is not right. Additionally, consumers are going to need to see an obvious difference between to two to be convinced to spend the considerably more money the PS3 is supposed to cost. I for one, don't think the difference is going to be that noticable. At least not noticable enough to convince casual gamers to spend $200 more, or whatever it is going to const, for the console. (Blue Ray alone will probably add at least $100 to the price) That, folks is what I think is going to make the biggest difference. Those of us on this forum really don't make up the majority of gamers and as such though we might spend the money on a launch console no matter what the cost most consumers won't. By the way I don't think that blue ray will be much of advantage for Sony at least for the first 2-3 years. The simple fact is that the technology is ahead of the market. We might need the format for high def but most consumers are not ready for it. I think that MS's decision to not go with HD DVD or whatever was a good move for them. How can you say that Europe will go with Sony when the cost of the PS3 is supposed to be so high. Everything over there is crazy expensive. The 360 will take North America and Europe but will hardly make a dent in the Japanese market. Say what you will MS has done too many things right this time around. They have a console that will probably be close in power to the PS3, much better priced, no lack of great games, the best live service, the first mover advantage, and a very strong momentum going from the last generation. The only thing Sony has that MS does not is larger last gen. market share and Blue Ray. But customers are only loyal if it is to their advantage and it must be clear. This next generation it will not be. The game differences are minimal because so many previous exclusive titles for PS2 are no longer exclusive to their system while MS has a ton of great exclusives. In the end I think the two companys will be neck and neck for marketshare which is right where we want them to be. Result, we win. Unregistered - Truth 09.19.2005 00:15 I'll let someone else tear your stupid fanboy ass a new hole because I have work in five hours and don't have the mental capacity at the moment to muster a good argument that doesn't consist of any less than 100 "fucking piece of shit fanboy" in it. It's really unprofessional as a business man,and for towards the developers I mean sure Sony wants money too but at least their not saying their games are going to devert sales of a system, I mean Microsoft wasn't going to license psychonauts when it was done. If it weren't for Majesco an Original thinking Gamemaker like Tim Shaffer would be lost I mean psychonauts is good even though it's a bit strange, well anyways I'll buy three systems. In the end I think the two companys will be neck and neck for marketshare which is right where we want them to be. Result, we win." This is all your opinion, true, however you play it off like it is fact when it most certainly is not. The exclusives are more even in the next-generation, but Sony still has the distinct advantage. And again, Swami Silverback pulls his mysterious psychic abilites on us by speaking for all of us consumers. If that were true then carrying over to the next generation Sony and the PS3 would dominate again. Your logic. I'm sorry, but your "personal opinions" have no weight behind them and sound awfully fanboyish in nature to me. However, that's just my "personal opinion" )) Unregistered - Next-Gen Fan 09.19.2005 03:34 How can you say that he is a fanboy. First off He said that in the end we all win!!! That means Sony fans, Microsoft fans, and Nintendo Fans win. All the Next-Gen Consoles have something unique about them. PS3 is really focus on raw power (meaning realistic worlds and environments). Microsoft is focus on great solo gameplay and Online gameplay. Nintendo is focus on the Past and Future of games. That's what he means when he said "IN THE END WE ALL WIN" because each of the consoles give the hardcore gamer what they want!!! From the way you sound you want the Playstation 3, and that's cool. But you got some out there that consider the Xbox 360 or the Nintendo Revolution. Me, I want all of them, so you can call me Next-gen Fan!!! Unregistered - Anonymous Coward 09.19.2005 04:51 Who has the most cash in the bank, Sony or MS? You know who already so stop kidding yourself. You can't compare a pond to an ocean. MS means big business, they are not some Sega Dreamcast like some of you said they are going to be. Darn, they has so much money they could buy Sony. In this next generation of consoles, the table could turn. Maybe Sony will be the next Dreamcast, who know? How many playable demos did MS put out so people could enjoy and play at TGS? I heard there were over 80. How many did Sony put playable demos so the puplic can see and play at TGS? I heard nada. MS is good and ready, they are well equipped with all the money and resource to take them along way. They are here to stay, baby. If you think they are going to die like the Dreamcast, that just to show you that you don't know what you're talking about. So don't underestimate your oponent, Sony. You got caught oversleeping and you are running late. So there isn't anything you can do now, but to admit that you are late with everything. You snooz, you could lose this one. Dragon 09.19.2005 05:21 Nice article still in all im getting all three consoles and beside if we get another dreamcast it's gonna be Nintendo because so far i have only seen Them self digging their own grave but don't get to cacky maybe they will burry both sony and M$ alive in the grave ^^ :D i hope none of the companys goes down. Nodieza 09.19.2005 06:55 Everyone please stop saying blue ray is going to be exspensive, it's just a normal laser that uses a different spectrum of light! Since sony orders them at such mass quantities it costs them about $5 a blu ray laser, and the physical drive itself couldn't cost much more so $100 for a blu ray drive (for sony) is stupid thinking, maybe the games will cost more because of blu ray, but not the drive! Unregistered - Fish Man 09.19.2005 09:10 #31 I'm not naive it's kinda obvious that sony and mircosoft want money, whatever gave you the idea that I'm naive, I said "sure sony wants money too", anyways what if Halo 3 doesn't come out when the ps3 comes out. I think alot Xbox fanboys will be pretty pissed off that the game they enjoy isn't out next year in spring. Bungie is the developer behind the game they'll know when it's done not the head hancho, how many hours do you think the developers put into Halo 1 and 2.I'm not mad or anything but Bill Gates has been in the business world for years I thought the guy would act as an proper business man. Unregistered - Gotabebetter 09.19.2005 09:18 Well lets look at it this way new systems come out what around every 5+ years I guess? But what if PC's worked like that, to where new new ones only came out every 5+ years? If I was was to tell you that a new computer was coming out with everything state of the art all the cool stuff. You would most likely buy it, because you know it's got all the best things and in 5 or more years you will have used it and got what you paid for out of it. But lets say I told you that in less then a year we are coming out with a slightly better system, with a few better things that will make it a little more advanced. Well damn I can save up a little longer now and just wait for the better one plus and I have five or more years later to get the next new system. I want the best so I'm just going to wait to get it. Unregistered - silverback 09.19.2005 09:20 Once again another example of a blind fanboy. Just because I believe that MS is going to do very well does not mean that I worship them like you seem to do to Sony. We can squable all day over my different opinions but I would like to just address the premises of my little, or should I say lengthy, post. Sorry about that. Anyway, my premise was that I feel that price will be one of the major and most influential of differences in the consoles. Sure we won't know what the final price will be until launch but if Sony is to be believed, and your right if you say that believability is a problem with them, then the we all will have to work many extra hours because it will be so expensive. It is supposed to be an uber computer right. This being so explain me how all this amazing hardware is supposed to be cheap. There is no way it can come anywere near what the 360 is supposed to cost, that is unless they take a huge loss. Not only will the cost of the hardware be more expensive but the games themselves will have to go up to cover the initial switch of manufacturing facilities to Blue Ray. This by the way seems to be the prevailing opinion out there so that is what I am going on. If all this is true, and yes you are right , if, then sales can only be hampered for Sony. Seriously hampered in places like Europe. Look I will be buying the system no matter what the price because I love gaming. But you simply don't have the best interest of gaming in mind if you really hope that MS is put out business. And my comment that "we win" was actually intended to mean all gamers not 360 fans. Unregistered - AS 09.19.2005 09:28 #35 who really care who has more money I don't really think anyones going to lose in the console war. And no one's expecting Mircosoft to drop out, anyways I'm pretty sure that sony and nintendo want to take their time with their consoles, thats probably why they didn't have any ps3 and revolution games availble to play. And why the hell would mircrosoft want to buy out sony, who in the right mind would buy out another company so their console could win. Unregistered - Silverback 09.19.2005 09:32 Only a company that already has a virtual monopoly and I'm sure would like to expand it. Unregistered - thereby 09.19.2005 09:53 Has anyone every seen that Comercial of the guy that just got a new Computer and it's the best one on the market and he's on his way home with it and he stops at a red light to see the Bilboard being changed with the newer version? It's funny that's what x-box fans will be doing when all the demos and shit come out for the PS3 after they just finished spending all the money on that new outdated system. The Cell is going to stop X-box, into the ground Sony isn't stupid they won't be losing money by switching to blu-ray most of their new dvd player and computers plus IBM will be using the Cell and Graphics hardware. They built their own faciltys to make their own chips and Hardware so it would cost lest to make and then they can make all they want for their other products. Just like M$, Sony doesn't do just one thing they sell computers DVD players Cameras, TV's, Games, movies, Phones, radios, etc. etc.. etc... These people arn't stupid they have been in this a lot longer then M$ and they know what to do and how to do it. M$ knows that if they had waited to release their system at the some time or around the same as PS3 then it would fail worse then it's going to now. But what I'm wordering is if they are releasing theirs now then how many corners did they cut to get ahead of sony? How good is this hardware and software their just sending out to the fans. I mean the system might be powerful but they seemed eager to get it out asap before sony got their first playable demos out. Something just doesn't seem right to me. Like their hiding something and just want to get it out before anyone notices it.... Oh well I didn't have anything else to say or do so I just wrote that up... Later Unregistered - Anonymous Coward 09.19.2005 13:54 Sorry for taking that "we win" coment out of context then silverback. Without a challange things become stagnant and that's something we absolutely do not want to see as gamers. Unregistered - Scythe 09.19.2005 14:12 Imagine if it was just Nintendo vs PlayStation, All the time it wouldn't be as good as it is now. Unregistered - The Truth(posted from another forum) 09.19.2005 17:39 http://www.joystiq.com/entry/1234000900043452/ by rog27 Some of you are not engaging in too much fore-thought here. And you all obviously are not business people. In the business world, Microsoft is what we consider a aggressor of monopolistic tendancy. They try to buy out every market they buy into. Eliminating competition doesn't do anyone any good. And just because they translate an online element from the already existing PC Market does not make them innovators in any way. Microsoft has been ripping off other people's ideas for way too long now, and it is scary. The fact is that Microsoft has held the PC market back from 20 years further innovation. If there are no opportunities for competition to emerge (Operating Systems, Internet Browsers, Etc.) of course Microsoft's solutions will appear to be the best. They also happen to be the only solutions. You think XBOX Live is the greatest and it may be, but things could have been so much better. Unfortunately, no one else has been able to penetrate the PC inter-connectivity market because Microsoft has locked them out. Thus, no one has had the prior experience MS has had and the reason for that is just not a good one. The reason things are not better - Microsoft. It is an unethical and irresponsible company that has bought its way through litigation deeming it a monopoly. You cannot deny these facts. Maybe you just don't care because you are shallow idiots like most other Americans (now you know why other countries hate us). You are receptive to the marketing machine and don't look any deeper into anything. Think before you assume the basis which I make my arguement. Sony is a Kiritstu. It is the nature of large Japanese corporations to operate in this fashion. They do not lock others out of their markets. They are very competitive - but not greedy in a monopolistic fashion. They do not badmouth other consoles and other companies. So far this has been a one way bitching war with Microsoft doing all the whining. There are a couple of reasons why; (1) the very idea that large Japanese corporations operate "fairly" in the business world and don't try and squash their competition is a joke. I have read a little, and I ephasize the word little, about Japanese business practices and your post just doesn't seem born out by history, at least in the global market, (2) I seem to think that the most sensational console war remarks have been make by the likes of Ken Kutaragi. That of course isn't to say that MS is without fault, but come on, get back to reality. I for one think Ken's comments are highly amusing and hope he keeps them up. Unregistered - silverback 09.19.2005 23:34 While the machine will kick some serious butt the shell design sure as hell doesn't, a George Forman grill it does resemble. Unregistered - silverback 09.19.2005 23:35 oops that was #56, sorry Unregistered - Master 09.20.2005 00:14 Learn the facts before posting! Please! Some of you have my respect, because you really know what your saying. The thing is I don't know much about the Revolution. I havent found much about it. But the 360 and PS3 are in my field. For hardware they both have alot of improvments. The prossesors: all say it striaght out, the 360's isn't bad, but the CELL kills it in every possible way you can imagine. The graphics prossesors: agian both beasts of a peice of hardware, but the RSX (PS3 prossesor) has been in development for less ime, and has already posted beter preformance. Ram: they both have 512, 360 has GDDR3, so does the PS3. The reason that I mentioned ram is because only 256 of the PS3 is GDDR3, the other half id XDR DRam, a new type that posts speeds well over 10 times that of the GDDR ram. The PS# uses Blue-Ray, what is blue-ray? If you want to know it is the way the disks are made. They are encoded with a bleu laser, and although I don't know why, this adds alot of space to the disks. A Blue-Ray disk can hold over 50 Gigs of data on a single disk, at better quality than none compressed disks today. The 360 is just a highly compressed disk formate. So Blue-Ray will be able to make an impact on the PS3 games even though it won't be in mainstream for a while. To wrap this up, the PS3 has the 360 beat in hardware. If you look at the actual tested specs, not thereoretical stuff, the PS3 hardware destroys the 360. But! Software if even more important. And with the PS3 running a form of Lenix instead of windows (and God knows the problems windows faces), the PS3 wins agian. So lets recap. The 360 is a nice improvement, but it's just that, an upgraded system. The PS3 has created 3 completely new types of equipment: the CELL, the RSX (the graphics card that is incorparated directly into the CELL), and the XDR DRam. It also uses Blue-Ray. Nevermind the fact that it's loaded full of ports and all. The PS3 is a revolution while the 360 is just an upgrade. I made sound one sided but it's the trueth. Actually I am a harcore XBox gamer, and was going for the 360 until I saw the facts. I know I missed some stuff because it's far to late, but it's a start. Sorry! for the long post. www.blachford.info/computer/Cell/Cell0_v2.html www.rambus.com/products/xdr/xdimm.aspx There is a couple of sites dealing with the CELL and the XDR (XDIMM_ Ram configuration. Unregistered - The Truth 09.20.2005 11:33 #57 That wasn't my post this was a psot from another forum from some user called Rog27 on "www.joystick.com" and frankly I put it up to point out how things are getting out of hand and he's right microsoft buy's out small computer companys. I'm not saying that Ken Kusaragi is a saint or anything, but how are other computer companys that start out small suppose to thrive if microsoft buys them out before they have a chance to put anything innovative out on the market. I mean microsoft started out significantly small and Gates isn't really giving people a chance to start out in the computer world like he did, frankly it's disgusting and this isn't really about the Xbox it's more about his business ethics. Unregistered - The Truth 09.20.2005 11:44 Actually blue ray discs are more than what you think check this link on wikipedia.I'm not trying to start any arguments about the next gen consoles. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_ray Unregistered - Scythe 09.20.2005 11:57 I'm sorry but if it was the other way around and X-box was using Blu-Ray Drives instead and the PS wasn't every X-box fan would be bragging about how PS is using old school shit and how MS is using only the most advanced stuff in the 360. It all comes down to who has what and well the 360 doesn't have it this time PS does. Also if certain games are made for the PS3 then if the company doesn't have to go back and redo the game to work on a HDDVD rom then wouldn't the game be better since they don't have to worry so much on not having enough space on the Blu-Ray disc? Look at what x-box(1) had, it had games the playstation didn't because it could support them and the playstation couldn't, so this time the Playstation will be the one with the more advanced games and more detailed games. Unregistered - Fish Man 09.20.2005 12:24 I'm not defending any system but as a gamer the Xbox should have had more of an variety of games instead of upgraded games from the Playstion 2 but they have variety on the Xbox 360 now I guess. The playstation 2 should of been easier for developers to make games on but they fixed that problem with the ps3 on this link http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,121916,00.asp and in the future it'll probably benefit the game developers. The gamecube should of had more adult oriented games, hopefully the Nintendo will fix that problem. In the end all three consoles had they're srengths and weaknesses. Unregistered - Bored 09.21.2005 08:53 Although Sony is the dominant player in the console business going into this generation of gaming it doesn't have a monopoly yet and no rational person seriously believes they will have one. The ten year cycle is their business model for the revenue stream the PS3 will generate. If they were in fact a monopolist then you would seriously expect not to see PS4 until around this time as they drained every possible penny from the market place before releasing the next generation. However the presence of Microsoft and Nintendo (and possibly some new entrants, or the return of old favourires who knows) will affect their plans. It's also likely that a portion of this plan will be dependant only on royalty from software following the cessation of hardware production which in turn will follow a period of parallel production of both the PS3 and PS4. In summary they were not saying they had created a piece of hardware so powerful there would be no need for a successor in the next 10 years but merely that they believed they could make money from it for 10 years. Not the same thing, not at all. Unregistered - Anonymous Coward 09.21.2005 09:31 For all those people saying that the lifespan of the ps3 will be ten years, wake up. PC's will surpass consoles in two years at the most. Microsoft will come out with a new console in 5 years that will blow the ps3 away, prompting sony to come out with a new console to rival the newer microsoft console. And GOW does look really good ingame. Your just in denial fanboy. Unregistered - Truth 09.21.2005 17:08 Perhaps PC's will catch up to the graphics being displayed on the PS3 in roughly two years, however they won't begin to touch the Cell processor for years. Unless Sony decides to incorporate them into PC's and such. I don't see they doing that anytime soon as that would allow Microsoft to get their grubby little hands on it. Unregistered - Anonymous Coward 09.22.2005 08:12 Fortunately it wasn't just Sony that developed the cell. Thank god IBM and I think Toshiba helped. We should see them in pc pretty soon, if they are as good as everyone is boasting. Unregistered - Truth 09.23.2005 18:27 Considering that Sony pretty much owns the rights to almost all the technology in the Cell chip, most importantly the state of the art semi-conductor technology I would be hard pressed to say that either IBM or Toshiba could just license the chips for use in PC's without Sony's consent. Unregistered - OldSchoolGamer 09.24.2005 10:00 Dont bother saying "that one is better than the other." Stuff thats written on paper is like reading the shit stain on toilet paper. Furious 09.24.2005 17:39 #81 I should have known when your post was in all CAPS it would be worthless... I would like to start by saying the Emotion Engine has fulfilled the initial tech demos displayed during the PS2 Launch and in some ways surpased the demos. If you don't believe me check out some of the PS2 Demo footage (http://ps2movies.ign.com/media/news/video/ps2demos/psx2_3.mpg)The character design in MGS3 is on par with the Tecmo girl demo, God of War & GT4 running in 1080i looks better than any of the PS2 prelaunch footage shown. I just included a link for one demo, you should do a google search to see more. Also, remember the PS2 is running with roughly a 300MHz processor. The XBox is about twice as powerful as the PS2 if you look at the specs, but the games do not look twice as good. Anyone remember developers saying the XBox was the easier development platform. Now before you say I'm pro Sony I own the XBox and have my 360 on preorder. I'm just trying to prove a point, the hardware is important but software development is always the most important variable. Both consoles will be monsters from a power perspective, but the PS3 has the most potential when you review the specs. It's simple math 7 cores running at 3.2GHz (I would say 8, but 1 core is for redundancy) compared to 360 having 3 cores running at 3.2GHz. I understand it's not exactly that easy of an comparision, but if the developers write their software for the SPEs it is a fair comparison. Perhaps you should review this article on Cell development and architecture. (http://www.blachford.info/computer/Cell/Cell3_v2.html) After you review the article you can discuss the Cell with a little more knowledge. The next gen war is not going to be based on hardware, it will be based on software how will the developers get the power out of the consoles. The PS2 had great AAA titles because GT4, MGS, GTA had engines developed from the ground up for the PS2 pulling all the power from the console. In the next gen war the only titles we will see truely using the consoles potential are exclusive titles built from the ground up to use the Cell/SPE achitecture. The titles from EA and other developers for multi-platforms will look great, but will not offer mind blowing graphics or special effects. The Gears of War game looks amazing, but it's only using one core on the 360! We should really see some amazing games in the years to come... Sorry about the long post, but I had to school #81 on his ignorant comments. Peace... Nodieza 09.28.2005 21:55 Thank you for being honest and not an ass about it like most ppl here. I suppose you are right, 10 years is wishful thinking but still not impossible, especially outdoing computers within the same price range as a ps3 (whatever price that is max $500) It's going to be a while before we see cell replace the standard mobo combo, and multi processors, multithreading isn't so great, friend spent thousands on a multicore cpu and it's only so successful but not worth the extra money... sorry getting off topic. As long as cpu's are running with Windows in the backround I say good luck computers, I think they've finally met there match this generation and will take a while for a computer alternative that's affordable. My best reguards and thank you for having a real conversation. Unregistered - GUY 09.29.2005 10:35 Do you even know who did the comparission? A man called Major Nelson. It just looks to shake out that way with the launch lead and the widely accepted price advantage. All the while sony maintains their fanbase and alot of the hardcore will stick with them because of the hardware specs and bluray (I dont care what anyone says, HD Movies will move this console). I think this generation more than any other will see a larger influx of multiple console households (I know mine will be one). And IN MY OPINION, the games truly will not be that much different graphically or functionally. Both MS fanboys and Sony fanboys need to realize that, and if you think otherwise your dreaming. Both systems are full of new technology. One may have an edge here and the other there, but get over yourselves and your ridiculous love of one and realize we are all benefitting when both companies succeed. Go take a look man, stop posting nonsense on the web. Unregistered - Anonymous Coward 10.02.2005 20:20 Your just a perfect example of a blinded biased person. I like both systems and both are VERY impressive. Quit telling me I am posting nonsense on the web..your the fool here. Both systems have displayed some of the most incredible visuals on a gaming console ever. Notice I say BOTH, its obvious that all you can interpret about gaming is totally non-objective. To be honest I dont know why I even replied to your post, its obvious you cannot see things objectivley or have an intelligent thing to say. Unregistered - PS3Player 10.03.2005 19:47 Long live Sony, loyalty to the end, the ones who went away shall come back when the light hits them in the arriving war, time will tell it all. Believe in the PS3, is belief in reality.Long live Sony, loyalty to the end. xxxxxx 10.31.2005 18:59 I know I've said a million and one times the 360 is superior to the PS3, but recently I've done some studying on the 2 systems and it seems that the PS3 is better than the 360. Besides being technically superior in almost every way the PS3 also has a far larger customer base than does the 360 and only a moron would argue that. Also, if you realy take a good look at 360 game and Xbox games, you'll see that the 360 is not really nexgen, but instead an Xbox 1.5 of sorts. As of this weekend I have gotten a refund on my 360 preorder and am patiently waiting for PS3 preorders to start. I'm strongly advising you, the Xbox 360 is not what you think it will be. Cancel your orders if possible. xxxxxx 10.31.2005 18:59 I know I've said a million and one times the 360 is superior to the PS3, but recently I've done some studying on the 2 systems and it seems that the PS3 is better than the 360.
