You heard us right, just a few days before the games is to be shown at Tokyo Game Show, some screenshots of Metal Gear Solid 4 can be found in the newest issue of Famitsu, and needless to say this game look spectacular! We will report back on MGS4 as soon as we learn more later this week at TGS. For now take a look at these screens, enjoy!

Update: Gamespot has posted some more info about MGS4

While it's only a matter of days before Konami shows off its first real trailer of Metal Gear Solid 4 at the Tokyo Game Show, the latest issue of Famitsu disclosed preliminary details on what event attendees will be seeing. As gamers may expect, the trailer will show how Metal Gear Solid 4 will be the most realistic-looking MGS yet, thanks to the PlayStation 3's high-quality graphics.

But the greatest change in Metal Gear Solid 4 may not be on its surface. In what may come as a huge surprise to gamers, screenshots in Famitsu show a character resembling series hero Solid Snake--as an elderly man with gray hair, wrinkles, and a moustache. Though the older man hasn't been confirmed as Solid Snake, he seems to have all the hero's trademarks, including a gray bandana, muscular physique, and the habit of smoking cigarettes. The man wears a mechanical patch on his left eye (making him look similar to Metal Gear Solid 2's Solidus Snake), which seems to be a high-tech scope connected to his new small mech partner, Metal Gear Mark II. Metal Gear Mark II looks identical to the robot that appeared in Konami's classic game Snatcher, one of Kojima's early works. A screenshot from another scene shows a man resembling Otakon, who looks like he's in his thirties or forties.

Other screenshots hint that Metal Gear Solid 4 will take place in a desolated, futuristic city rather than in a jungle like Metal Gear Solid 3. Soldiers, tanks, and two-legged mechs are seen on the roads. Talking to Famitsu, Director Kojima confirmed that Metal Gear Solid 4 will take place in a war zone. The game will feature multiple countries waging external wars and suffering from internal strife. Kojima plans to add realism to the relationships between Snake and the countries to make it more than just a simple character-enemy relationship. For example, if Snake kills a soldier from one country, he may end up allying with its opponent.

Director Kojima says that he hopes to make Metal Gear Solid 4 more "natural" than previous installments in the series. With the hardware shift to PlayStation 3, the developers will be able to give natural motions and facial expressions to the characters--eliminating the need for exclamation points to appear above soldiers' heads when they recognize something.

During E3, Kojima said that he wants to develop elements that aren't "visible by the eye" in Metal Gear Solid 4. He revealed to Famitsu his plans to include "mind games," which will have opponents' concentration depend on their mental condition. For example, soldiers may become weaker if they get intimidated.

bah! This doesn't do us any good at all :-( They're just cutscene graphics or something at best, come on guys, we want ingame action. Hopefully we'll get to see some real stuff at TGS, same with DMC 4. I'm stoked, let's hope they keep most of this stuff to themselves, it's nice to look at, but doesn't tell us anything about the game itself.

Looks pretty good for a PS3 game.MGS used to be one of my favorite games. Hopefully they have enough sense to put it on the Xbox360 or it's gonna be a failure.

PS3 isn't even made yet. How can they even show pictures of what they hope it looks like. Hell I can show a picture of me with six pack abs, but in reality I have four pack. This game is lame!

Wow, Snake is Old. Has to happen sometime even to a CGI character ;). But yeah, these are pre-rendered things most likely. Show us a couple of in-game scenes and then we shall judge.

8 - WAKE UP ALREADY
Unregistered - Nodieza 09.14.2005 16:45
Jesus christ people, wake up, didn't you read the other articles? Obviously this is real time, "Real Time Trailer Showing At TGS" Hmm I wonder what these screens are from? Maybe the real time trailer? Hmm sounds good to me. You guys are stupid havn't you seen the actual running game of "Gundam"? obviously not Stop reading team xbox articles and start getting info from more than one source. The MGS 4 is real time and running on dev kits. So please wake up and get the correct info before you start bitching and spreading rumors. It's real! now let it soak in, good now accept that Mgs4 is going to rule. Good Job kids.

Thank you #8. Some people are so in denial that the PS3 will shadow the XBOX 360 that they just can't wrap their pathetic fanboys minds around the facts that are laid out in front of them in plain view.

Konami, and more specifically Hideo Kojima does not lie. His footage for both MGS2: Sons of Liberty and MGS3: Snake Eater were both scoffed at as pre-rendered and... liek oh ma gawd, gues what, he promised and fucking delivered. In some cases surpassing.

So please. Keep your god damn, no-brain having, negative ass, blatantly fanboy comments to yourself. Thank you, and good night.

Sorry #3, it's confirmed to be PS3 exclusive out of the big dog Hideo Kojima's mouth himself.

Most likely he'll make a game tailored to the XBOX and Gamecube crowd though sometime later on after MGS4.

Like I said...they're cutscene graphics, and MGS has always used realtime graphics in their cutscenes. It still isn't showing us ingame material, you can always make games look better if you're just making realtime movies, that's why I want to see ingame stuff!

"Like I said...they're cutscene graphics, and MGS has always used realtime graphics in their cutscenes. It still isn't showing us ingame material, you can always make games look better if you're just making realtime movies, that's why I want to see ingame stuff!" ------ Do you know how stupid you just made yourself sound? I mean really. If MGS has always used realtime graphics in their cutscenes then wouldn't that signify that the graphics we're seeing in realtime as that's the only think MGS uses?! Your logic by the way. And again, I point to the statement I made that Kojima has always met if not surpassed all the videos he has shown for all his previous MGS games.

17 - who said anything about cutscenes?
Unregistered - Anonymous Coward 09.15.2005 00:20
Shut the hell up!raving on like you know shit, your one of those guys who types a load of crap just to try and sound smart, besides who the fuck said they were cutscenes it doesnt say that anywhere thats just what you think and it doesnt mean that your right, the pics inset 3 look in-game to me and look at the second pic of the first set that to looks in-game as well, think fight night round 3 that was shown at E3 when kudo tsunoda pan the camera around the fighters or just think about gundam, that was still in its early stage of development(the developers say very early)and its manage to look top notch.so unless your actually on MGS development team and can tell us something about the game dont spin us some bullshit and make sound like you are.

Comment #17... if you're speaking to me then I will proceed to rip you a new orifice. If you're talking to someone that said the graphics where a cutscene, ( which I was saying they weren't if you could read ), then ok, have fun with them.

19 - Thank you
Nodieza 09.15.2005 07:01
Finally legit arguments and such. Well you see almost every developer has said that they are completly backing away from cg because the load times will still exist because it would still take a while to prerender cg at that great of detail, so there solution was to build much better in game engines and use them for cutscences as well examples from THIS generation are Mgs 2 DMC 3 and RE 4, so Kojima specifically is sticking to this because he wants a perfecly flowing game with no pauses between areas or cutscenes so if that's what he wants pre rendered cg wouldn't be the was to go so thank you #9, #13, #16 and for #12, Picasso admires you!

Unregistered - Vivicious 09.15.2005 09:11
How stupid are you guys (16 + 17)? Jeez, maybe instead of saying idiotic remarks you should learn about what normal people are talking about here. I'll explain it to you morons once. First 16, I'm saying that the graphics we are seeing are from cutscenes that are rendered in realtime! So I don't know what you're babbling on about, but you're making yourself look stupid. 17...LOL, are you actually so stupid that you think these screens (zoomed in on people's faces for God's sake) are ingame screens? That while people are playing this game the camera suddenly zooms all the way into somebody's god damn face? Are you such a total moron? Anyway, as I said, I'll explain once: Realtime is not the same as ingame. A movie being rendered in realtime is a movie made using the ingame engine, but because they have alot less to worry about than ingame action, they have the chance to tune up the graphical detail and such. So I said: I want to see ingame action! Not just these realtime movies. Think before you speak.

22 - Wow... just wow.
Unregistered - m0r0n 09.15.2005 11:06
Making assumptions on others age because of personal lack of knowledge
is really pathetic you know that? A sign of immaturity at it's peak. And for the record, I'm 21 ( same guy who posted comment #16 ).

And I find that hard to believe that Kojima would polish a whole bunch of prerendered footage for MGS4 when he hasn't done it for ANY of his previous titles. None. Not one. Zero. Zip. Nada. He's always shown actual game footage running off the consoles engine for all his games and has alm\ways met if not exceeded what he's shown. So again, take your own advice and listen to what the normal people are trying to tell you.

Another thing. How can you make assumptions that the game isn't zooming into their face because it's an in-game cutscene using the game engine? Hmm? Don't be a total moron and not take this into account as it happens frequently in the MGS series. Lots of close ups on main characters. So don't call me a moron for actually playing the game and knowing this is a common occurance and is what's probably happening in these images show in Famitsu magazine. I can't say for sure, but it seems pretty damn likely.

Again. Take your own advice and think before you think/type because as it stands right now we're making educated guesses ( well I am, don't know about you... ) and we won't know for sure untill the actual game trailer comes out sometime later today. So let's just shut up untill then, eh?

23 - PS3 is my only friend... online? what is that?
Unregistered - Ryu Hayabusa 09.15.2005 11:51
Hey assholes can you read nihongo?
All those wonderful pics are concept art... please do not assume they are at all in game play... like kill zone... oh wait that was CGI. Haa Haa!

24 - #21... you are wrong.
Unregistered - just me. 09.15.2005 11:53
Realtime and in game are the same thing. Realtime uses the in-game engine AND TEXTURES etc.

Realtime means... the PS3 is moving and rendering as you see things JUST LIKE when you play. a cut scene using realtime is nothing more than Pre-scripted events using the same models/textures that are in the game... just the CPU contrls the movement/sound and camera movement.

I believe that what someone up there meant is
"I wonder what it will look like when you are actually controlling the character."

It will look like these realtime cutscenes, but you will be looking at the back of Snakes head, (or through his eyes) with probably a H.U.D. and life meter.

25 -
Unregistered - Vivicious 09.15.2005 12:10
No #24, realtime isn't the same. Because the cutscenes are scripted events there is alot less data that needs to be processed, almost every game (including for example MGS 2) that uses realtime cutscenes you can notice the difference between ingame action and the cutscene (Another good example is Halo 2).

26 -
Unregistered - Vivicious 09.15.2005 12:16
#22, Are you serious or just acting stupid? I cannot believe anyone could have this much trouble reading plain english, while he does pretend to understand the article. And who in God's name is making assumptions about your or whoever's age? If you're talking about me, you need to get your facts straight moron, because I never once mention your age. I honestly cannot believe you're 21 and cannot understand what I'm trying to tell you. I can't believe I'm even going to say this again....THE CUTSCENE IS NOT INGAME IDIOT! YOU'RE NOT PLAYING WHILE THE CAMERA ZOOMS IN, THAT'S WHY IT'S CALLED A CUTSCENE! Jezus Christ...IT'S RENDERED IN REALTIME WHICH IS (DUH) USING THE GAME ENGINE, BUT IT IS NOT INGAME. REALTIME MEDIA IS NOT THE SAME AS INGAME MEDIA! As I alreay explained, there is a difference. How dense can you be, learn to read.

Unregistered - Truth 09.15.2005 13:58
You all are arguing over a game you know nothing about yet aside from a few screens in a magazine. And to those saying the game screens in Famitsu magazine are cutscenes, please tell me how you could possibly know that? Are you MGS insiders are something? Are you at the TGS right now talking with Hideo Kojima? Didn't think so. So untill later tonight or tomorrow when the actual video is shown why don't we all just shut the hell up because in truth no one knows jack shit at this moment in time. One more thing. I don't know if #26 has ever played either MGS2: Sons of Liberty or MGS3: Snake Eater, but the cutscenes using the in game engine look exactly the same as when you're playing the game. SO on that account sir, you are dead wrong.

28 - whether or not a cutscene
Unregistered - Maleficus the Great 09.15.2005 14:29
Whether this is a cutscene or not, it looks great, even though I don't think Snake should look so old. Sony is better than Microsoft, but fanboys are just retarded.

30 -
Unregistered - Vivicious 09.15.2005 14:42
Yea, I've played it. And I don't understand how you can say that? It's pretty obvious, even more so in games like H2. Why wouldn't these be cutscenes? What else would they be? If you're playing the game, the camera zooms in on somebody's face while your playing, and you get shot...doesn't seem very logical to me. If you stop - the camera pans out - it's a cutscene.

31 - To #30
Unregistered - Truth 09.15.2005 15:28
True however, you're making it out to be that MGS4 isn't going to look this good. That only the cutscenes are going to look this refined and polished. Let me just go on record and during my lunch break I scoured the internet and found only one instance of MGS cutscenes looking better than the actual in game graphics. You want to know what the example was? MGS: The Twin Snakes on Gamecube. And the only way they made the cutscenes look "better" was by dropping the framerate from 60fps to 30fps only to get full scene AA. That in no way means they tinkered with the details to make the textures look better or none of the other nonsenes I've been hearing people state. So that leads me to believe that while these may be cutscenes ( logic would lead me to say yes, however I won't commit untill I see the actual game footage ) it still does nothing to subtract how beautiful MGS4 will look. Let's agree on that much at least as this is by far one of the best looking next-gen titles I've seen... visually, aside from Fight Night PS3. :D

#10 -- Hideo Kojima said it was going to be a PS3 exclusive for 2006. He didn't say it wasn't going to be on another console at all. So its still up in the air.

34 - To numero #33
Unregistered - Truth 09.15.2005 20:11
No, I'm pretty sure he said MGS4 was exclusive to the PS3 because it would take too much effort to port the title to the XBOX 360 or Revolution. He would much rather make a game tailored to each consoles demographic instead of simply porting an existing game. If you can find a link that states conclusively otherwise then I would gladly admit I was wrong. As it stands however, those are his words via IGN's articles on the subject.

35 - A thought again

this is to #30 I was the one who typed up #17 and if you could read I stated that I thought the second pic of the first set looked in-game(the full body shot)and the pics of set 3,and you would also Know if you read it right that I talked about a paning camera(read #17)......maybe the NEW 3D cam their talking about?oh and I picked up on one more thing look at the last set of pics and take a closer look at the one with binocular vision(red)look at top right corner of the shot there seems to be what I think is a radar just like you would see if you were playing.....in-game anyone?

37 -
Unregistered - TUFF CUNT! 09.15.2005 22:19
JEEZ ya guys are pathetic...

The shots revealed in the magazine are images running on actual PS3 hardware, and as impressive as they are, they will get better, according to Kojima's comments. While the images in the magazine are pulled from a demonstration clip, the world of MGS4 that you'll control when playing the game on the PS3 will look as good. And we assume the same can be said about the TGS trailer as a whole. from IGN.

HIDEO never uses CGI or prerendered shit...and u should know that by now.

Ok I just want to make a few thing's clear!what many of you dont understand or know is that the developers are using a NEW CAM,so far it is only known as the NEW 3D cam.my guess is they have done away with the fixed cam that we have seen in previous MGS and gone with a fully controllable third person cam where the player can pan the camera around(think prince of persia),which why I say I think the SECOND PIC of the first set of screens could be in-game(the one where the camera's looking up at the unknown man)...to read more on what I had to say read #17 and #36.
