Sony today announced the new controller for PS3, which will become available as standard with the system. The controller for PS3 has been created by refining and improving the world’s most popular PlayStation® controller that has shipped more than several hundred million units worldwide, while inheriting its basic concept and design. The controller for PS3 employs breakthrough technology of high-precision, highly sensitive six-axis sensing system that does not require any devices other than the controller itself for seamless interactive operation, thus eliminating additional settings to TVs. With this technology, ways to enjoy PS3 will be further enhanced by accessing PS3 through the network, while retaining the six-axis sensing capability.In addition to the “3-posture-axis” of roll, pitch and yaw, “3-dimension acceleration information (X, Y, and Z)” can be detected in high-precision and in real-time. In addition to standard key input available in existing controllers, more natural and more intuitive play will become possible as if the controller has become part of your body. Pursuant to the introduction of this new six-axis sensing system, the vibration feature that is currently available on DUALSHOCK and DUALSHOCK2 controllers for PlayStation and PlayStation 2, will be removed from the new PS3 controller as vibration itself interferes with information detected by the sensor. The shape of L2/R2 buttons located on the top of the controller has also been enlarged with increased depth in stroke for more subtle control in games. At the same time, the tilting angle of the analog joy sticks has been slightly broadened to enable more delicate and more dynamic manipulation. Along with these improvements, precision of above information detection (L2/R2, analog joy stick) has been increased from 8 bit to 10 bit. All input information will be immediately transferred to the PS3 system through the Bluetooth wireless technology. By using a USB cable, the PS3 controller can be swapped seamlessly from wireless to wired, and can be charged automatically. The cable can be attached and detached at anytime. By integrating all these features into one standard PlayStation controller, SCEI, together with content creators, expects to further expand and accelerate the world of next generation computer entertainment. If you want to compare, it's the 2000 MS Sidewinder Pro for PC, same tech. Even they screamed copycats, wii ripoffs, Xbox 360 wannabas, you name it. Most preferred the boomerang since it was there own unique idea. There just copying off of the competition now. 4 -

Islandkiwi 05.09.2006 07:48 Some thoughts about the controller. No vibration...Sony is taking the patent infringing feature out of the new controller, which is interesting. I think we've all gotten used to the tactile sensation of vibration in a game, and the Ps3 won't have it. Games will be completely different without it; I know I would miss it. And although it is incredibly similar to the Dualshock, this one somehow feels cobbled together. The boomerang was made fun of, but it was unique. 10 -

They went back to a comfortable style of the controller that has been popular since Playstation was introduced. I will miss the vibration but its not the end of the playibility of a gmae .. cause honestly most games didn't use that feature often enough to warrant having it. It was nice to have it vibrate when playing FFXI so I knew when I caught a fish ... lol. I adjusted to the vibration when i thought it was stupid. I will adjust to this. Anyways to answer the question about the wireless controller. Yes it's rechargeable and if you read any articles about it you also would know that you can plug the usb in while still playing the game to have it charge back up. DUnregistered - D 05.11.2006 22:59 I cant seem to find the artical, but in short, Microsoft paid the company that came up with the dual shock concept, and kept it, Sony Went to court with it and lost. I belive Sony is appealing the decession, but I would not expcte a change, I am used to the dual shock now and it does offer some function, but I think if Sony refines there new controller some more with the "tilt Feature" it will be better then dual shock anyways. I would really love to see the contrller made aware of its location instead of just tilt, but time will tell. D 34 -

Well Sony gave people what the wanted and guess what..they still complain. Yeah they might of had the same controller for 10 years now but that just goea to prove how good the design was in the first place. And Xbox fanboys really don't have anything to say because you're playin with an S controller. If it ain't broke don't fix and just make a few refinements. I think them adding the new gyro function is a good one. Amagine playing Fight Night and dodging punches just by moving the controller. Nintendo's controller uses a different motion sensor for its controller which requires an external sensor that goes under the TV, PS3's motion sensor is built in, no need for external sensors. 41 -

It's depressing to think I'm going to have to buy a xbox 360 now to play racing games. Phil Harrison can go on all he likes about how it's a "it's so last generation". But it's like bring out a new television without speakers and saying that sound is a "last generation feature". I really loved the PS2, I'm gutter with Sonys madness.We had to wait longer for a machine with a HD DVD player that no one wants and to had pay more to the privilege.
