Recent comments about the price of PS3 from Ken Kutaragi have left many wondering if he has taken leave of his senses - but his statements are part of a delicate balancing act that Sony must get right if PS3 and PS2 are to co-exist in the market, says Rob Fahey Rob Fahey - editor of GamesIndustry.biz.
The answers aren't immediately apparent - but the father of PlayStation is no fool, whatever else he may be. Kutaragi's statements come with an ulterior motive, which could be as simple as leading people to believe the console will be very expensive only to reveal a "surprisingly affordable" price down the line, or could be as complex as a carefully orchestrated push to position PS3 as a premium product in the minds of consumers. One thing is certain; Sony's launch plans for PS3 are far more complex than Microsoft's planning for Xbox 360, which boils down largely to pulling Xbox off shelves and shoving Xbox 360 into its place. Sony has a delicate balancing act to pull off, with millions if not billions of dollars of business still left in the PlayStation 2, a burgeoning handheld business in the PlayStation Portable, and now a high-end console and media centre to bring in at the top of the market. Heck if it werent for Sony you probably be stuck with just the Nintendo and the Games they ALLOW to be made. So show some respect for the company that got you out of kiddie games and continues to do their best to give you more..sure its at a hefty price but you get what you pay for... Tell a person that this should cost more and then spring the real regular cost on them and they will buy it. Best thing about it is they don't have to say: but wait theres more! Think about the so called Shortages. They hold back so you will get frantic about it they when and ebay wins(for a few weeks anyway). I agree there is little point yelling at SONY fr being number 1, however no one in history has ever remained at number 1, they always get pushed aside... not saying that will be the case, but Microsoft have the launch, and amazingly similar spec console, and they know how to make it more of a multimedia centre, whereas SONY has loyalty and.. well.. Japan.. but loyalty can be shifted very quickly indeed, and the japanese want what the rest of us want, quality games.. which lets be straight here both consoles will have!! at the present time i have preordered the Xbox360 and am planning on getting the PS3, although getting that will depend on if SONY get it right, which is by no means guaranteed... lets not forget IBM laughed and pointed at Bill Gates when he took them on X years ago...
