Under Phil Harrison’s GDC keynote speech, entitled "PlayStation 3: Beyond the Box", real-time demos were shown of both WarHawk and MotorStorm. For now we only have the words from a Eurogamer correspondent to go by, but hopefully the videos will be made available on the net soon.
[ ZOMG, a PS3 game! WarHawk is being demoed in real-time, according to our correspondent, with shots of flying through clouds, over the ocean, as hundreds of ships and missiles cluster around capital ships in the sky (WarHawk was one of the games shown in pre-rendered sequences at last year's E3, obviously). Naturally the producer then gets up and says how easy it was to develop for PS3, and that WarHawk will be playable at E3.
….apparently a real-time MotorStorm demo is on display. MotorStorm was one of the most controversial of the E3 videos last year, but early reports from our man (yes, it is a man) suggest that there's plenty of mud flying around and dust going everywhere, HDR effects and highly detailed visuals. Hmm, mud-slinging... Wheels leave wet mud trails which are persistent, says Harrison; as they dry out, they change the contours of the ground and mess with your suspension realistically. Obviously, it will be the gameplay that counts and so I am just waiting until E3 to see what the next set of impressions are. I think that this years E3 will be absolutely AMAZING because on top of Sony showing some playable PS3 games, Microsoft will be announcing a ton of new games and unveiling what are sure to be more than a few killer aps. Excuse me if I'm a bit side tracked, ...I picked up a 360 (my first Xbox product) and I love it! Although, I am interested in the PS3 for obvious reasons - I really think that the 360 will own this years E3! Can't wait. 3 -

Developers have aleready said the PS3 doesn't choke, no matter what the graphics/physics load! The 360 crawls pushing two character models on the 360 fight night (if you don't believe me play both the 360 and Xbox version, the 360 version was slowed down becasue of the graphics load), whereas the PS3 screams pushing 300 on screen enemies in Heavenly Sword. 11 -
DarkLegacy 03.22.2006 19:14 Man o man, has history not taught gamers lessons time after time? Having the most powerful system of the current gen does NOT mean it will be the better system. EVERY SINGLE GEN, it was a system that was noticably weaker that end up being better than the rest. Same goes with the handheld marker seeing how Sonys PSP is just being man handled by the DS. It will be the games that will end up deciding what system is the better system. The PS3 is more on a level of "hoping" things work out for them. They have alot more riding on there system than MS does with there Xbox 360. The Xbox 360 is here & they've gained much more developer support this time around for there system than what the original Xbox system had. I already know it will fail in Japan. There all about RPG's & there Hentai Porn Games =P. The Blu Ray technology will be a huge deciding point for Sony. Aside from players/records & the PS3, a good percentage of there sales will have to come in the form of a PC Drive. MS (if they wanted to) can complety shut the door on them in that area. Well, they can defitnly make it happen with systems running under a Windows OS. MS is much more capable of pulling more strings with HD DVD than Sony can with Blu Ray so that is another thing that has to be looked at. When it is all said & done however, I am sure that Sony will still end up being the top system before a newer gen comes into the picture. Just don't expect the PS3 to dominate the marketshare like the PS2 did. It aint going to happen. The numbers will be much more tighter this time around. 12 -
DarkLegacy 03.22.2006 19:21 At #10, Fight Night for the 360 is an awesome game but I wouldn't put a nickle on anything that has EA involved. If a quality Developer like Ubisoft said something like that, then I would accept it much more. EA blows when it comes to making games on a new system. They'll always blame someone or something else if something doesn't turn out the way it's suppose to. Give them a year before they get it right. Guranteed there first crack at the PS3 will probally be just as bad. 13 -

Xenos, the X360 cpu is able to run physics math like a physics chip (ageia for example) ... running a total of 1 teraflop of calcs (while Cell theoricaly reaches 200gigaflops.. actualy more around 100) being a interagted architecture you can choose which shader cores will be vertex (physics) and wich will be pixel (texture effects) .. you can set aside 5 cores to physics and tops PS3 physics .. RSX is also able to run physics, but with the current videocard limitations .. instead of a custom videocard like Xenos. Dont "excramate" things on the air without data to back it up .. read websites like Anandtech .. or simple shut your fanboy mouth up. 17 -

Compared to the E3 presentation, the game is close in presentation and functionality and look to its promise, with detail not reaching the level of the astounding E3 demo but still running with some very cool technology to provide a new way of playing in the mud. Developed by Evolution Studios, the game's presentation featured buggies and motorcycles running through a rugged desert. The game's advanced new mud physics were incredible, leaving ruts behind in the mud using real physics. For example, a motorcycle was seen cutting a deep groove in the mud while kicking up muck at a white truck following it, the trailing vehicle buckily wildly as it battled off the streaming mud while also trying to find a line to drive in the groove-etched bog. The particle effects, however, were not nearly at that level of quality, looking a little temporary at this stage of early development. Hopefully, the unfinished details will be sweetened up as the game goes on, and the gameplay already showed signs of achieving the frantic nature of the E3 2005 teaser video. The game was unfortunately not confirmed to be playable at E3 in May yet, although the game will be there in some form. We'll have more on MotorStorm soon. 29 -

However bad off Xenon will be in that department, the PS3's Cell will probably be worse. The Cell has only one PPE to the Xenon's three, which means that developers will have to cram all their game control, AI, and physics code into at most two threads that are sharing a very narrow execution core with no instruction window. (Don't bother suggesting that the PS3 can use its SPEs for branch-intensive code, because the SPEs lack branch prediction entirely.) Furthermore, the PS3's L2 is only 512K, which is half the size of the Xenon's L2. So the PS3 doesn't get much help with branches in the cache department. In short, the PS3 may fare a bit worse than the Xenon on non-graphics code, but on the upside it will probably fare a bit better on graphics code because of the seven SPEs. 35 -
real-time PS3 graphicsUnregistered - Akakage 03.22.2006 22:57 I'm not quite sure I understand why PS3 having "x360 quality" graphics is viewed in the negative. Both Consoles are similiar in design. We all know the stats...3.2 ghz cpus (cell and xenon) 500+mhz gpu (xenos and RSX). Really the only difference in the specs is the "theoretical power of the Cell". Alot of the cells capabilities are still unproven, while its obvious its a cpu with monstrous power its doesn't mean that power will be used to its full potential nor does it mean that it will be good at game code. The power difference between X360 and PS3 isn't any bigger than the power difference between Gamecube and Xbox. Actually its smaller. X360's biggest limitation is its DVD drive a limitation that may prove to be an asset later on. One thing I will give Msoft going into this next-generation their main focus has been trying to get more titles for their X360. That's a great attitude for a company to have...especially from a consumer standpoint. Sony seems to be more interested in selling Blu-ray and HDTV's (so much so they have raped nearly everyone who already has an HDTV by making blu-ray not compatible with them). Never the less, I'm sure there will be great games for PS3 as 3rd parties always seem to deliver. The recent trend does seem to point to alot of multi-platform 3rd party games...this could force a "battle of first party games"...a Battle Nintendo would win...HAHAHAH!!! The only place they can possibly come close to doing that is in Japan & that is it. North America, Europe, Australia, it aint happening =). Im sure people will want an opinion as to why I would say that. You have to look at it in a certain way. Xbox Live is a total experience with Music, Movies, etc as downloadable content. They have a much easier task of getting support from various Artist, Actors/Actresses & so forth cus there like in a neutral position. Sony on the other hand has its rivals everywhere. They have a Movie Bizz, A Music Studio, etc. So they will have to work maybe twice as hard to gain as much support in other countries other than Japan than MS would. With the gaming, there just cloning exactly what MS did with Xbox Live, so theres nothing original or unique there. They'll both surve there purpose, but MS will have a much easier time gaining more content towards there service than Sony will. 85 -

You say MotorStorm like physics can't be done on the PS3, please check out Shadow of the Colossus on the PS2, how the ground creates ditches and rubble, where one foot of a colossus touches the ground, over which the player encounters terrain undulation in real time. Or just wait for Seiken Densetsu 4 on the PS2 and see what level of physics is done. MotorStorm is just a startup on the PS3 and the hottest thing is that Sony is gonna have 'Procedural Synthesis' techniques done in games right from the start on the PS3. Warhawk and MotorStorm are just two of 'em. 119 -

to 118Unregistered - ? 03.26.2006 01:50 your point is valid, but at least pick a comparable game. might just be me, but i think you would look for stronger graphics in a game like untold legends than you would in a japanese party game. neither of the systems will probably ever be maxed to their potential. they still haven't maxed ps2 or xbox yet. think what games will look like when developers have had a full year + with the final hardware. should be some nice stuff on the horizon. i think it just comes down to your tastes. gta is one of the biggest sellers of all time, and graphically, it's pretty weak compared to alot of other games. the difference will be exclusives. a lot of games will be on both and it will come down to personal taste. 122 -
