Sony is evil, Bill Gates is Lucifer and we are all going to die! Oh look, the headless horseman...
This is a rant by your host Dusty, which is lightly inspired by a comment made by one of our readers in response to the “chaos” following Sony’s recent announcement of a November launch, which went somewhat along the same lines as my intro. Not that I necessarily agree with everything this member wrote, but that one comment nailed the situation right on the head, and not just this situation but the current state of the gaming industry/community. I said this was a rant, but it will be more like a friendly reminder to all our readers, I pledge guilty myself, and so are most of you, that being game industry professionals and gamers alike. By now you are probably thinking who is this Dusty anyway. To give a short answer to that, I am the owner of this site as well as Xbox 360 News, along with several other game related sites. I wouldn’t call myself a game journalist though, my writing is too sloppy, and I don’t do that much writing anyway. Basically I am just some dude who is trying to make a living in the game industry, in the big picture am probably quite insignificant but here are my two cents anyway, and if you don’t care then you can stop reading now. Now where was I… the current state of the game industry/community. I am not sure if it has always been like this as I am only 25, but I have a feeling the problem is worse now than ever. There are tons of things I could point my finger at regarding people’s reaction to Sony’s November announcement and the whole PS3 vs Xbox 360 situation in general, but I will not as it will do no good. So what are we guilty of? Most of us are guilty of taking gaming and the game industry way too seriously. It is not about war and peace or world hunger. Have we all forgotten why we started to play games to begin with? The game industry should be about putting a smile on peoples faces, sometimes maybe even a tear (Aris death anyone?). So why do I see so many angry faces around me, game reviews that could have been published in "Scientific American", and developers talking like they were working on the cure to cancer? I am not disrespecting anybody, I just think it is about time we all sit back in our seats, take a deep breath and ask ourselves the question - “why do we play games?” Add Comment  1 -

Because the 360 has come to pass, it will only make the PS3 better. Why do you have to side with one or the other? Each system will have KILLER exclusive games, and the multisystem games will be identical. If you're a true racing fan, why not buy PGR3 AND GT4. If you're a FPS fan, pick up Killzone AND Halo 3. The lame excuse about "have pity, I can only afford one system" is a bunch of crap. Most of you have money right now saved up for one or the other. Pick up a 360, and you'll have close to a year to save up for a PS3. Be a gamer, not a whinny, pathetic excuse for a decent human being. Good times can be had by all. 5 -

Personally, I have an Xbox 360 because it was first out and I never took part in the previous generation of consoles (never had PS2, GC or Xbox). If it all possible, I'd like to get a PS3 as well. Some games i enjoy on the xbox and some games on ps2 i enjoy. it you are a true gamer you would want both regardless of specs. Both will deliver awesome games one way or the other as the past generation did. Like Resident Evil 4 for Gamecube. I know more people bought that console for that game becuase of the mind blowing gameplay. All i have to say is that I am glad that I am a live to see these systems come out and enjoy what the human mind is capable of creating and the entertainment that comes with these consoles. Too much money...Unregistered - Bflow 03.17.2006 16:22 #9. Sorry i don't have that much money but i plan on having both systems(i have a 360). I just love games...on any system. You have the right to your opinion but i have an option for you a well as others. With those of you who buy systems i taking it that most of you have jobs. If you want more than one system the simple solution is to save early. I personally have a jar where i put all my spare change. Every chance i get i usually give bills out so i can get change because i really doubt most people will miss 50 cents here and there especially if your buying $400 systems. Plus i usually put $5 bucks a week in there as well. Systems come out every 4 to 5 years...well you guys do the math. You'll be suprised of how much you'll have in that time period. Just try different #'s per week to best suite you but anything will help when your spending $400 bucks. 12 -

ON POINT - GOOD READJoe 03.17.2006 17:30 I love the tech industry. It's nice to share opinions about technology and where it's going, as well as, making my own predictions. As long as we keep an open-mind about it, there's shouldn't be any flaming. I've been pretty involved with techology since I was 15. I basically built a PC for the fact of playing video games, i.e. Betrayal at Krondor(RPG). Back then, games came on floppies. That game was both entertaing graphically and gameplay. I'm 34 now and work for a great technology company. In my opinion, video games are moving away from the PC platform and onto consoles because of the simple fact of piracy. The only thing that PC games have over consoles today are strategy games. I enjoy talking about XBOX360 and PS3 stuff. It's interesting to hear both sides of the issue. I own an XBOX360 and loving it. I have no issues with getting a PS3. I will probably get it sometime later(few years) when the games get better of they have an exclusive title for it, or if the blu-ray becomes standard. I'll pick it up as a player. In any case, as long as the discussion is healthy, I don't think we need to flame. PEOPLE TEND TO FORGET THAT IT'S COMPETITION THAT CAUSES TECHNOLOGY TO LEAP FORWARD. The other thing that people tend to forget is that it's the games that we are looking forward to play, not the console. PEOPLE NEED TO START THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX, AND LOOK AT THE BIGGER PICTURE. The console without the games is just a huge paper weight in your entertainment center; look at the Dreamcast. My prediction is that the console with the most games available will be victorious. Better hardware doesn't neccessarily mean that it's the best. That's my five dollars and some change... 16 -

For M$ and $ony this is no game, its a matter of survival. As for us the gamers, I think that we should support the system we like because of the games it has. The fact of the matter is that most gamers probably dont support both systems and sony and microsoft know this.As for me ,so far i dont like the ps3 because I havent seen any actual ingame screens that make me say its better than the 360, plus i think that even though ps3 has a slick high-tech look about it the 360 is a masterpiece of symetry and beauty, then there is that akward ps3 controller clearly the 360 is the more well thought-out system. And last the games, the only games that I like from the playstation happen to be made by sega: virtua fighter(best fighting game), phantasy star(super addictive). On the 360 forza motorsport is better that gran turismo (but actually the funnest driving games ive ever played are the original PGR on dreamcast its called metropolis street racer and 24 hours of lemans also dreamcast)and metal gear has nothing on splinter cell. Now listen closely: OBLIVION IS NEAR AND HALO 3 AND GEARS OF WAR ARE LOOMING so pay no attention to biased sites like gamespot and others when they omit to say that games like black and toca race driver3 are also on xbox. and Dusty thanks for these 2 nice sites, that is xbox360news and ps3today. 27 -
to 22Unregistered - ? 03.17.2006 21:50 how is it stupid to not make a format which isn't standard and may never be standard, an included item in your system? if hd-dvd fails, but they incorporated it, then it's worthless. if it becomes the standard, you can get the add-on still for less than a stand alone. if blu-ray fails, you're stuck with it. people have the choice to get it if they want to, and aren't stuck with something that might not even be used in the near future. look at how many people are still using vcrs now and just barely converting to dvd. what's wrong with dvd quality? people wouldn't even care if sony hadn't brought it up. if you buy a ps2 or xbox for $300 and they come out with a new model 6 months later for $500 or $600, are you going to buy it right then? most people probably wouldn't because then you've basically wasted the $300 you spent in the first place. at this point nobody knows which, if either format will survive. i for one would rather have a choice. I'm an american citizen aswell as canadian (dual citizenship)and have lived in both countries an equal amount, and I've gotta that I'd rather live in Canada. Alot more open minded people here who tend to question things before believing everything they see on the news or that comes out of a politicians mouth. That's what mainly happens to us gamers, Sony and Microsoft tell us something great about their new upcoming system and we all freak: sony shows us trailers and says they are in game graphics when most are all demos and trailers, and Microsoft says the graphics are only running on 1/5 the box's power when later the graphics hardly improve at all. Every console has its fare share of crap that flies around, with both companies talking smack about one another to gain the popular vote; its alot like politics. Any canadians remember the recent election? Every commercial was part of a slander compaign, it was disgusting. With this new generation, I'm pleased to see Nintendo staying out of the middle ground. Microsoft and Sony are the 2 big punk kids in the centre of the school yard, beating the hell outta each other while Nintendo is preparing to an artilerry barrage of rocks from a distance. They've thrown little slander out at all, and have so far been very clean and mature this generation. Microsoft has also recently toned down a bit, but they are still throwing the odd sucker punch now and then. The point is, we all take what these reps of the companies tell us and blow it way out of perspective, choosing sides based of one or two statements these guys make, developing an opinion on half of the information when we should be researching all of it to make an opinion based on the whole picture. Dusty 03.20.2006 09:27 Just to make it clear, I do agree with what many of you have said about the importance of discussing the industry. I do of course welcome discussions that challenge or criticize Sony/MS or the PS3/360 as long as people are able to keep things calm and leave out the emotional outbursts and name-calling. I can assure you guys that both people from MS and Sony are surfing these sites regularly and are reading your comments (they show up in our server log). So keep that in mind next time you voice your opinion. I do take some of the blame for the constant flame wars that have been preventing many from leading any constructive discussions by allowing unregistered visitors to post. However, many of the most informative comments have come from unregistered users and I know many also appreciate that the forum is open. After talking to our programmer we have come up with a solution that should get rid of most of the spam and bad posts. This will be done by giving all members authority over unregistered users, so that if two or more members vote a comment made by an unregistered user as spam, it will automatically be deactivated. This way most of the bad posts will instantly be removed from the site. Hopefully we can get this in place maybe next week. I will let you guys know as soon as this update is done. 41 -

Re: HmmDusty 03.20.2006 11:53 We already do IP blocking but too many people have dynamic IPs and too often a whole school or workplace have one IP for all their users, so by blocking one user we also risk blocking other users. Blu-Ray...Unregistered - Bflow 03.20.2006 20:01 I really trying to figure out how blu-ray is going to fail compared to hd dvd.It's impossible because every PS3 sold is also a player. There is no possible way hd players can keep up with PS3s sold. Plus i have an hdtv so i'm going to buy stuff that takes advantage of it plain and simple. And i know hdtv's are still in minority but that will change in the future. I believe the PS3 & 360 will be good for the hdtv industry. 54 -

Do you realise how much of a loss (for the first couple years) MS and Sony are taking per each console sold to bring us the best technology in gaming strictly due to competitive standards?
