If Sony wants the PS3 to succeed not only as a game machine but as a multimedia/super-computer the OS (operation system) will play a major part in their success or failure. A recent article on an official Sony website confirms that the OS for PS3 is yet to be clarified and that they are still looking into the possibility of running Linux or Tiger.Read about Tiger Read about Linux Here is the full article PLAYSTATION 3 featuring Cell processor Ever since PLAYSTATION 3 (PS3) was presented to the public at the Los Angeles Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in May 2005, PlayStation fanatics have been eagerly awaiting the launch of the next generation computer entertainment system. The new games console is due for release in Spring 2006. Thanks to full backwards capability, gamers will still be able to enjoy their PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games on the new model. With its enormous processing power, the next generation PlayStation is more reminiscent of a super computer than a typical games console. The PS3's piece de resistance is its new multi-core 3.2 GHz Cell processor. The Cell was developed jointly by IBM, Sony Group and Toshiba and is supported by a 256 megabyte XDR memory. The Cell enables an astonishing two teraflops of computing power which will help give future games the visual quality you expect from a movie. Sneak previews of the highly anticipated PS3 games Motorstorm™, Killzone™ and FORMULA ONE™ promise spectacular graphics. Technological innovations mark a new era in entertainment The PS3 features a Blu-ray Disc ROM (BD-ROM), capable of storing up to 54 GB of storage on a single dual layer disc, futuristic cable-free control pads and a detachable hard drive. The gamer enjoys unprecedented connectivity with wireless Internet access, HDTV support, and wireless LAN and Bluetooth compatibility. The high definition RSX graphics chip, which was developed in collaboration with NVIDIA, runs at 550 MHz and can process two full high definition streams (1080p) simultaneously. The graphics processor is supported by 256 Mbyte GDDR3-VRAM (700 MHZ). Up to as many as seven control pads can be hooked up to the console at any one time. Connection to PSP™ will be possible via WLAN so fans can expect games which support this function. The PS3 offers excellent connectivity with other machines. Three Gigabit ethernet ports and two HDMI interfaces (with up to 1080p definition), an optical digital output as well as a full six USB 2.0 ports (4x front, 2x back) are available. The PS3 also includes slots for Memory Stick, SD card and Compact Flash media (Type I,II). The games machine turned super computer "Empowered by the Cell processor with super computer like performance, a new age of PLAYSTATION 3 is about to begin," declared Ken Kutaragi, President and CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. The PS3 should serve not only as a games machine but as a computer with a multitude of possible applications. For example, photo and video editing are standard PC applications which the PS3 will feature, according to a recent interview which the PlayStation boss gave to Japanese PC magazine Impress PC Watch. Sony is expected to offer optional hard drives for the PS3 with potential memory capacity of 80 or 120 GB. It remains to be decided whether the standard version of the PS3 will come complete with a hard drive. The operating system has also yet to be clarified. But then again Linux is a serious treat to Microsoft! oh the humanity!!! Oh wait what if the throw us a curve ball with OS2 from IBM? Oh wait I think that is Sony's point keep Microsoft quessing. This is Huge stuff people this is where the gamesmanship is going on not the graphic chips, anc CPU debate. The true battle for the living room. Oh yeah and for the record there WILL be a hard drive included in the PS3, (required for the OS, as they have MANY files that need to be store initially, and changed constantly!).
