Spring is drawing closer, and we are yet to see any real indications that Sony will launch the PS3 this spring. A new Merrill Lynch report published late last week suggest an autumn launch in Japan is most likely, with a US launch possibly being delayed to early 2007. Spokeswoman for Sony Sakaguchi responded to the allegations made by Merrill Lynch stating that Sony is still aiming for a spring launch. "There is no change in our original plan to release the console in spring 2006," Sakaguchi told the press in Tokyo. However Sony’s definition of spring is a bit unclear as an April/May launch is now looking more and more unlikely. The main reason for a delay according to the latest Merrill Lynch report is the high manufacturing costs of the IBM Cell processor and the Blu-Ray drive, sending the total manufacturing cost per unit as high as $900. Sony's shares fell as much as 4.4 percent on Monday in response to the report. The shares closed down 3.6 percent at 5,300 yen, underperforming the Tokyo stock market's electrical machinery index IELEC, which fell 1.85 percent. If Sony delays the launch by 6 - 12 months manufacturing costs can be dramatically reduced, while also giving developers extra time to explore the power of the new hardware. While they are not videogame developers or console manufacturers, they know money. While I doubt that they're estimates are 100% accurate I think they probably aren't that far off. They have inside information on the cost of cell and blu-ray (I'm sure many of their board members and management officials own stock in IBM and Sony..among others) so their estimates should be fairly accurate. Merrill Lynch has been in business for many years so I'm sure they have some idea of what they are talkin about. $800/$900 per console..I dunno about that..but its probably close..meaning $599-$699 could be a possibility..doubtful though...who would spend that much on a ps3? But considering that stand alone blu-ray players are starting at $1500.00 with no "cell" under the hood...how far off can this actually be? If PS3 really does cost $800-$900 per unit...then $399 and $499 are unrealistic price points. Sony would stand to lose (at $499) $300-$400 dollars per unit sold. If sony sells 1 million units that's over $300 million dollar loss. That would take years to make back up. Software and accessories won't recoup that..even with a high tie-in rate. One thing I could see sony doing is initial ps3 games on DVD but charging $69-$79 per game or perhaps $70 dollar controllers for ps3. Again..both scenarios highly unlikely, who would pay those prices? Personally I think Ps3 will be $499. Why $499..because more expensive means better in most consumer minds. People will be willing to pay $499 because its "only" $100 more than the X360 premium..fanboys will view it as a "bargain". I do think though at $499 the tie-in ratio with games and accessories will suffer a little. Either way it won't hit America until around christmas...so if your american like me...you'd better start saving now..if you want a ps3..because I know it will be a very expensive purchase..no hard-drive = required memory card and at least 1 game...meaning your spending roughly a llil over $600 for the console and 1 mem card and game (at $499, $59 for game, $39.99 for memcard) 14 -

The games that will fully utilize the hardware will be out in a few years suppossingly, right??? Then, I think I'll buy the PS3 when the games that I expect to see such as Killzone and MGS4 will come out. There is no sense in buying the PS3, which is obviously going to be more pricier than the XBOX360 only to have the same type of gameplay and graphics. The only benefit to buying the PS3 now is for the Blu-Ray player... But even then, it is still a gamble because the HD-DVD/Blu-Ray Standard hasn't even been widely accepted. If the HD-DVD standard is more widely accepted by the consumer, then I'm screwed. Sony should have just used a standard DVD-drive, and left the Blu-ray drive as an add-on. Doing it this way, they could just build the PS3 without any issue. Man, Sony is really bugging the crap out of me!!! It doesn't make any sense to buy the PS3 until Killzone and MGS4 is out. Sony says that they will support the PS3 for 10 years. There is no rush to buy the system when it comes out. I'd say hold out when the better games come out. By that time, the PS3 will be a lot cheaper. 34 -

Didn't Sony's E3 demos and trailers look far more complete and more impressive than the 360's. So why haven't we seen anything even close to a game during gameplay? This is just stupid. Why can't Sony just admit that the PS3 is not even close to ready? And what's with all the rush now that the 360 is on the market. I am not going to pay 500 dollars or more for a console that gives me the same thing as it's competitors. If this thing comes out too pricey how can it fly off the shelves. But they still have lots of time to work on this. When the next generation systems come out and I mean the consoles after these we speak of then we'll truly see new and huge inovations. many people arent ready for these yet as many are still using dial up internet. by about 2010 we'll officially all be more than ready and then we'll start to truly see whats up. I know many of us are already there but alot arent. So while these newest consoles will be truly exciting it's still held back by people just not being ready yet for more.
