Sony Computer Entertainment has announced its acquisition of developer Guerrilla Games, the company behind Killzone and its much anticipated sequel currently in development for PS3.
Guerrilla signed an exclusive development agreement with SCE in March 2004, and considering the big role their current project (Killzone PS3) plays in Sony’s PS3 strategy this news didn’t come as a big surprise. The Amsterdam-based studio also announced that it is working on a Killzone PSP game. SCE Worldwide Studios president Phil Harrison commented: ”Guerrilla have a great combination of creative, technical and production talent in their team and we have enjoyed a close working relationship with their management and staff for a number of years." "As we prepare for the launch of PlayStation 3 next year, this acquisition strengthens our development portfolio to take full advantage of the exciting entertainment opportunities provided by PSP, PlayStation 3 and beyond.” Guerrilla MD Hermen Hulst added: "Sony Computer Entertainment - with its truly global presence, leading platforms and commitment to innovation - is an ideal partner for Guerrilla and we are delighted to take our existing relationship to the next level." Add Comment Unregistered - Alucard 12.07.2005 13:11 Sony has acquires Guerrilla Games. Sony are doing What M$ did to Bungie for halo. The great part about the news is that killzone 2 is not going to blow, just like halo 2 did. I think it's agreat move on sony's part. what do u guys think? Furious 12.07.2005 15:15 I'm sure Sony made this power move based on all the feedback regarding the Killzone E3 trailer. Since all the MS fanboys claimed the footage could not possibly be realtime footage on the PS3, the title receive a lot of free publicity and hype. Honestly, the Heavenly Sword & Motor Storm demos were visually as impressive, but no title recieve as much hype as the Killzone footage. Now we can officially say this title will be the Halo killer for Sony. Thanks MS fanboys appreciate your help. Peace Unregistered - pshizle360 12.07.2005 16:02 halo2 is amazing and i played it for over 100+ hours on xbox live...killzone2 is not going to be a halo killer...your way off...first off this developer did not make a halo killer from the start and im not expecting anything more...killzone was not good at all...therefore, this game will blow...but if the graphix and all are some what close to the E3 trailer, you ps3 fanboys are in for a treat...i wont count on it until i see real footage! DONT BELIEVE IN THE HYPE! Unregistered - Killzone Rocks!!! 12.07.2005 16:58 Killzone is going to rock....i love the First Killzone. I have to get Killzone PSP and Killzone2! Unregistered - chilli kebab 12.07.2005 16:59 Don't be too sceptical on this. This is a really positive move for Sony I think. They have a lot of killer exclusive apps over Microsoft and securing Killzone developers is a good move. Also,I'd suggest that those who are bias towards Halo (I am a fan myself), don't start to dismiss killzone too quickly, Killzone 1 did not impress in its first outing, but Bungie are not the only developer capable of pulling out a good FPS, and let's not forget for those narrow minded ones out there....Halo may be a huge franchise, but I can't win the battle for Microsoft on its own, Microsoft need to tie up all the popular game genres which is not as easy as it sounds. Unregistered - Akakage 12.07.2005 17:50 Killzone was a decent game on PS2 but it most definitely wasn't a halo-killer as it was lacking serverely in the gameplay department. Visually Killzone 2 will be fantastic..I'm sure...as it's gonna be on a next-gen system but I can't see it being better than Halo or Halo 2. They are really gonna have to step it up in the gameplay department. More than likely they will "borrow" many ideas used in Halo...as the first Killzone attempted to do. Killzone was like more modern version of Call of Duty. Its weapons were okay but it just wasn't as fun as halo. Especially in the Multi=player area where Halo 2 really kicked SOME SERIOUS ANUS. With PDZ's multi-player being fantastic..Killzone 2 and Halo 3 will have to up their game a lil. I never like FPS with the exception of goldeneye but Halo was such a good game..that I not only bought it, but now I play other FPS games. Killzone wasn't as good as I never had a desire to purchase or play it again after my exposure to it. Killzone 2 has alot to live up to..first it has to live up to the HYPE that was created by the "E3 scandal". Secondly it has to surpass the original in gameplay as the first Killzone couldn't touch Halo or Halo 2 with a 10 foot pole. Unregistered - Akakage 12.07.2005 17:58 This isn't a surprising move..as I thought sony already owned guerilla games. I'm not sure of guerilla's history but Bungie has been doing FPS games for a long time...so halo's success wasn't an accident. I'm not putting guerilla down at all, but I do believe they have alot of ground to make up if they want to compare Killzone to Halo. I do find it funny though cuz it does seem like Sony is copying Msoft by purchasing Guerilla similiar to how Msoft purchased Bungie. We'll see how well this new Killzone turns out. If sony doesn't do something with their online structure though...then Killzone is DOOMED to mediocrity. As halo 2 online is heavenly...especially now that the cheaters have been boooted!! Unregistered - Akakage 12.07.2005 18:16 in case anyone missed this about killzone E3 trailer Arjan Brussee, Development Director of Guerilla Games wrote: Paul, Thank you for you email. I am glad to see that you are looking into the matter at hand rather than making false judgements. The video shown at E3 was not in real time. It was a CGI demo sped up from 5 FPS as you said. The development team did this because we could not make a demo of that calibur at 30-60 FPS on the hardware we had at the time. Now however, the team is working the game on PS3 alpha kits, and it is looking just as impressive as the demo, at 30 FPS. The game is still in the very early stages of development, and I expect that it will release with visuals that are just as impressive as those in the E3 demo. We are planning on showing in game footage before too long, and we can't wait to see the public's reaction to it. Arjan Brussee http://www.gameinsider.com/comments.php?id=1089&catid=1 Unregistered - whatever 12.07.2005 18:21 i realy liked the firt killzone. too bad it felt unfinished. they really should polish it for another 6 months than it could be a great game. i hope they dont do the same mistakes this time around. Unregistered - whatever 12.07.2005 19:20 ok now u just being negative Unregistered - Someperson 12.07.2005 19:44 Actually, KillZone was never meant to be a halo or a halo 2 killer. The media hyped it up as a halo killer. KillZone is a completely differnt game from the Halo series. KillZone focuses on the grittiness and suffer of war and Halo focuses on fast paced actio and the imagination of sci fi. Two completely different games Unregistered - Someperson 12.07.2005 19:44 I meant to say fast paced action The One 12.07.2005 21:22 Damn, some of you people are really negative. Why not wait to see whatthey produce instead of speaking about it like you know what it will be. If they have a whole year, then they have a whole year to make the game into whatever they want it to be. Personally, I didn't like Halo or KillZone. Unregistered - Daniel 12.08.2005 00:07 Killzone 2 just looks good but I doubt it is going to be outstanding, infect it is going down. Truth 12.08.2005 04:11 As of right now, every game developer Sony touches turns into gold. Look no farther than a game like God of War to see what Sony can do for a decent company. I have no doubt that Killzone PS3, with Sony's backing with be a powerhouse of a game. Halo killer? Who cares. I personally liked the first KZ and still play it when I'm in the mood to experience what a real war scenario feels like. Overall. Good move on the part of Sony. Punk Street 12.08.2005 10:10 Halo is Halo and Killzone is Killzone their two different games and all that Halo Killer Stuff was made up by the media, it took two years for guerilla games to learn how to do console gaming. Killzone has potential the only problem the first game had was the controls, it takes time for game developers to fully utilize the things they have at they're disposal and I know the next enstallment will be better. Unregistered - Diablos 12.08.2005 10:17 I think Half life 2, Call of Duty 2, and F.E.A.R are the best FPS out right now. Maleficus the Great 12.08.2005 10:32 Killzone has a gritty, realistic war atmosphere, whereas Halo has a more polished look. I like both settings, and think that both could be improved upon. I think that this is a good move for Sony. Unregistered - MisterNewsMan 12.08.2005 10:48 MGS 4 is also Realtime, look here: http://files.filefront.com/MGS4_PS3_Devkit_Demo_Eng_subs/;4440530;;/fileinfo.html its not the Trailer from TGS! Unregistered - Oblivion 12.08.2005 11:49 Killzone 2 looks amazing visualy but no one talks about the gameplay. It certainly is NOT a HALO killer. Unregistered - pshizle360 12.08.2005 16:14 GET IT THROUGH YOUR HEAD PEOPLES.......KILLZONE 2 E3 VIDEO NOT REAL! PAUL CERULA 12.09.2005 01:11 You guys are incredible. MGS4 and Killzone are not truly running off the ps3 as a game. Now maybe they worked and worked on a 5min bit and ran it off the ps3 but that doesn't mean that's what the game will be. Anyways your going to wait for MGS4 until 2007!!!! And killzone who knows when The fact is that both games are not even close to being done and those trailers where just highly programmed and very detailed....NOT OFF THE FINAL PRODUCT. Gill 12.09.2005 16:26 The flame war comments will continue to be deleted. The topic of the article is Sony acquiring Guerilla Games, try to stick to it. Unregistered - Ben-N1ce 12.09.2005 17:40 -- Deleted by Mod -- Unregistered - Alexander 12.09.2005 19:04 Actually 50% would be a closer figure to the number of ports, many of these other games (mainly sports titles) are not ports but share the same name. The content is different. That is why I request the poster above to shut up. BillGatesSucks 12.11.2005 15:51 I like all the talk about Sony copying what MS did in buying out Bungie by themselves buying out Guerilla. Like no other company has ever made an aquisition like that to secure property before MS did it. It's an old business tactic and one that's very familiar to MS. Ol' Billy would buy up Sony itself to get all the good titles if he could. Chronocom 12.11.2005 16:26 I just can not wait for Killzone 2 I don't care if X flop 360 owners think the graphics are pre-rendered, the game looks awsome!!!!! Unregistered - GEV1L 12.11.2005 19:54 Yeah the graphics for killzone 2 lok pretty sweet, but Guerilla games better start making their games actually fun to play. The first killzone has pretty bad controls and was otherwise alright but that Shellshock:'Nam 67 was just horrible. The better put for effort into making sure Killzone 2 is an all around solid game, not just real purty graphics. Unregistered - Jimbob307 12.11.2005 21:40 I remember a while back when I read from the used to be Guerilla Games website that Killzone, the second one, was already being worked on a little after the release ot Killzone 1 Unregistered - TJ 12.11.2005 21:53 Well their gurilla is new, I mean when Bungie was unknown they made two games called Marathon and myth in the days they weren't that great. Unregistered - TJ 12.11.2005 21:56 My mistake guerilla games is new. Unregistered - Huxley 12.11.2005 22:00 Well now that they don't have crap tools anymore they shouldn't have any problems. Unregistered - Chris 12.12.2005 07:41 Halo is a really great game, but the thing is killzone 2 is gonna step the ber above Halo 2 and alot of xbox owners were impressed too with the footage seen and thought well if that looks that good on ps3 imagine how it'll Halo 3 will look on the 360, but to 360s owners horror the 360 is inferrior in games and in power so now all it can be said is it's not real footage. Unregistered - Oblivion 12.12.2005 11:57 I dont trust these developers. They're based in Ansterdam!! And everyone knows that Ansterdam is famous for legalised marijuana. They're probably smoking joints when they should be developing a highley anticipated game. Unregistered - Huxley 12.12.2005 12:45 That's one of the most ignorant posts I've ever heard on this forum. Unregistered - Roach 12.12.2005 12:50 its funny to hear people still debating this topic when the developer already addmitted that it was not in game footage . But all you have to do is look at the video to know thats its not in game footage how could it be when the game was still in production and their was know ps3 present at the time when the video was made. Unregistered - Sig 12.12.2005 13:03 Nice try but do you have any links or proof for what your saying because alot of fanboys who come here don't seem to give significant details or information for their claims on the net, I checked wikipedia and it seems your way off. Unregistered - Sig 12.12.2005 13:05 Fanboys will be fanboys they're too lazy to check for relevent information I won't be here anymore. Chronocom 12.12.2005 17:09 Yes it's true that is not in game footage bt the developers stated it was running on ps3 kits or something like that. Maahes 12.13.2005 13:09 anyone know sony's next show and tell of PS3 Dev1032 12.13.2005 14:46 "The development team did this because we could not make a demo of that calibur at 30-60 FPS on the hardware we had at the time. Now however, the team is working the game on PS3 alpha kits," They should be working the game on beta kits by now and soon to be released (supposed to be this month) final dev kits. Launch games will be written on beta kits which is roughly 75% the overal power of the final dev kit. Unregistered - dabbbbiiiiiddd!! 12.13.2005 18:52 Halo 3 on Xbox 360 is going to be better than any game that will ever be released on PS3 including Killzone even though it's on Xbox 360. I am not being hypocritical of PS3 and their game designers, but look at the general trend. Halo was game of the year in 2001, and Halo 2 sold more copies than any other game in the industry's history with over 25,000,000 on the first day alone. I think I will pick Halo 3, enhanced online play is a significant element in the era of next generation gaming, and Halo 3 online will be amazing! Dev1032 12.13.2005 20:50 Wow, halo 2 sold 25,000,000 copies on day 1, are you sure about that figure, seems a little high to me, unless the game sold for $5 per unit. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6456214/ $125 million in first-day sales Unregistered - Oblivion 12.14.2005 12:17 im 34 and i was joking!!!!!! can u take a joke? Chronocom 12.14.2005 17:11 I didn't think Halo 2 was a good game anyway, I liked killzone 1 way better. Chronocom 12.14.2005 17:12 And I don't think TO 35 is joking, that is the reality. Unregistered - c 12.16.2005 00:14 i hate halo.. its so lame, aliens, fake guns, im mean come on you got to be like 10 to like it. :/ mindgrinder 12.17.2005 18:15 HALO was good and fun there is no doubts about it. BUT it's killzone time now and halo 3 will be just another game....by the way 25,000,000 IT'S THE NUMBER OF PS3 SOLD IN THE FIRST 6 MONTHS......... Unregistered - Someperson 12.19.2005 22:03 But I thought of something, KillZone is now first party meaning Sony funds and they have more acces to Sony and are also exclusive developers. Meaning they could ask other developers for tips and now has a much clearer view on how to unleash the power of the Cell Processor. I think it is possible for KillZone 2 to be a launch title. They have been working on KillZone 2 since 2004 on high end PCs .
