100 Million PS2s Shipped Worldwide

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) announced today that cumulative worldwide shipment of PlayStation 2 had reached 100 million units as of November 29th, 2005, breaking the record as the fastest computer entertainment platform to reach this remarkable figure. This achievement comes within 5 years and 9 months since its launch in Japan in March 2000, 3 years and 9 months faster in penetration speed compared to its predecessor, PlayStation. PlayStation was the first computer entertainment platform ever to reach the 100 million mark, achieved in 9 years and 6 months since launch.

PlayStation 2 is strongly supported by a wide range of users as well as from third party developers and publishers, and by maintaining backward compatibility of software titles for its predecessor system for the first time in the history of computer entertainment, PlayStation 2 has become the standard home entertainment system with over 14,000 PlayStation and PlayStation 2 titles playable, of which 6,200 titles are for PlayStation 2 alone. Cumulative software shipment has reached a total of over 1.869 billion units as of September 2005. PlayStation 2 still continues to enjoy great popularity in only the 5th year of its lifecycle, and with steady demand for the slim-line model introduced in November 2004, PlayStation 2 is sure to surpass the shipment of PlayStation, the best selling computer entertainment platform to date.

With an overwhelming shipment of 100 million units worldwide and an exciting line-up of new and attractive titles scheduled for release in the coming year-end/New Year peak selling season, the PlayStation 2 platform is expected to grow even further.

SCEI will continue to expand PlayStation, PlayStation 2 and PSP platforms and will create and develop a new world of computer entertainment for the broadband era through the fusion of game, music, movies, and broadcasting.

PlayStation 2 Cumulative Shipment by Territory (as of Nov 29, 2005)
  • Japan (including Asia (*1)) 22.22 million units (launch date: March 4, 2000)
  • North America 40.65 million units (launch date: October 26, 2000)
  • Europe/PAL 37.14 million units (launch date: November 24, 2000)

Worldwide Shipment: 100.01 million units (*1) Includes shipment to Asian countries and regions including South Korea.

Congratualation Sony, i never thought they would achieve 100 million but they did.. yaiii. Hope they have similar success with ps3.
Does anyone know the total sales of xbox or gamecube?

    Maleficus the Great 11.30.2005 12:30
I am surprised that there were twice as many units sold in Europe and the US each as there was in Japan, where the PS2 was made. I suppose population was a main factor for this.

I thought the PS2 was only released in black, but the one in the picture was silver. Was that a limited edition model?

    Vivicious 11.30.2005 13:42
Since the black version there's been a few PS2 versions. That's the slim version if I'm not mistaken.

Congrats Sony, I have to admit that of the 6,200 titles made for PS2 only 100-200 were any good, but it's still an amazing achievment.

    but one question
how many of those 100 million are replacements for ones that brokedown.??

as it states "shipments" not "sales" in marketing there is a BIG difference between those two words

Havoc thanks for the site showing the PS3 controller, really gives us perspecctive on the size and the comfort. Looks awesome as always. Oh and way to go Sony on the PS2. I have no doubt the Ps3 will be even more successful.

well, that's cool color for PS2. I actually have very first PS2. I wonder if I can trade PS2 with PS3 plus some money too.

@ Havoc, I actually really don't like the way the guy is holding it, it seems too thin for that kind of design. I'm sure you can get used to it, but it def. wouldn't be my first choice in design, and it's far from the nicest looking gamepad I've ever seen. =P

Congratulations on hjitting 100 million sony. To be honest though, I really hope that they come nowhere near that mark with ps3. Not that Iam anxbox fanboy(only a bit) but I am hoping that I will only have to buy one this time. Just out of curiosity are there many others that have bought morethan one ps2( from having one not work right?

    Bill Gates 11.30.2005 19:27
@vivicious. Plain and simple, DON"T BUY IT. You criticize everything. I bet you would judge a book by its cover too huh? It’s a controller that no one has touched, looks comfortable to many of us including myself, and finally, it's not finalized. There was a third party contoller similar to this design for the Playstation, and it got raves for how confortable it was. The only thing that sucked about it was that it had no analogs. I believe this controller will be just as comfortable as the 360's controller.

    17 -
    Fish Man 11.30.2005 21:41
The ps3 controller looks fine to me, the alps controller looks exactly like the ps3 controller and it ensured good comfort, looks can be deceiving and people tend to judge things based on looks and congrats Sony.

I criticize everything? Lol, somebody sure is a drama queen. =P Also, notice how I'm looking at it's playability first, and design second. So your comment is pretty far from the truth.

Well first off the game looks like it could be good. And second the controller might be good, but im still not sure still looks a bit uncomfortable to me. As to those complaining about Vivicious he's actually one of the few ppl that gives constructive feedback about topics w/o bieng totally blind by loyalty or hatred to Sony.

That's true but I'm not convinced that it's ucomfortable I never held the controller before to make a clear judgement.

    26 -
    Maahes 12.01.2005 11:30
Perhaps your not as ignorant as a statement on one of the other threads made you sound. You probably were just fed up with ppl who contribute nothing sorry for calling you out. (contoller thread)

Agreed. Actually the over all design looks good, just the shoulder buttons i question.

    29 -
    Unregistered - Huxley 12.01.2005 11:43
Ignorant I'm just telling it how it is buddy, Sony is going to target the Japanese Consumer market first and it's irrational to think that they would make a controller that didn't give absolute comfort.

To be more precise I don't like to be misinformed by people just because something doesn't look a certain way, I want concrete information by people who held the controller in their own hands then go on speculaiton.

    30 -
    Unregistered - Huxley 12.01.2005 11:48
Well until January we have to wait and see what the finalized controller looks like because they'll probably let people try it out at CES in Las Vegas.

If making a big deal of someone's posts involves asking them to back up their comments, starting a discussion (whether we agree on the topic or not.) or maybe even putting a fanboy in his/her place now and then, I'd understand. Otherwise, I don't quite follow you.

How can I make this clear for you Vivicious, I don't like to misinformed by people If you think the ps3 controller is uncomfortable thats just you and everyone else but that's not enough to convince me otherwise that it has problems.

Alright first off Huxley, Vivicious is entitled to his own opinions whether you like it or not, and Vivicious he does have a point though no one has held the controller yet to prove if the buttons or the controller has problems.

I found this on the last discussion about the ps3 controller but it's about the alps controller if you guys want to debate, even if you guys read this and still diagree it's not my problem.

I understand where he's coming from, but like I said in the other thread:

"I doubt there are that many people that have been able to use the PS3's controller in action, so speculating about it is just about the only thing we can do at the moment."

    40 - Correct?
    Unregistered - Alexander 12.01.2005 17:43
To the person who said that 1 million out of the 100 million sold had to be return. The figure is closer to 10 millions returns, and its actually 100 million shipped, not sales. 9/10 of the people I know with playstations have broke and have either been sent back or left faulty (ie console that has to be shaken so that it releases the tray), i dunno if the people I know just dont care for their consoles atall or if there just built to be faulty.

Welldone to Sony, but it would probably be closer to the actual amount of sales if the figure was 90 million.

Quit running your mouth stupid. Let’s see you create an electronic product, and push it in such a way that it ships out over 100 million. And than senn if you can do it twice in a row. Like Sony or not, this is still a remarkable achievement. I'm sure that even Sony's competitors are very impressed by this achievement. Quit being such a hater.

    42 - Congrats Sony
    BillGatesSucks 12.04.2005 16:05
2 consoles selling one hundred million each, that's quite an achievement. I've only needed to buy one PS2 and it hasn't given me one second of trouble, not even a hiccup. All my games run perfect. I also use it as a full time DVD player and it runs my movies perfect as well. And with games like GT3, before they added the save feature during tournament mode I have left the game on pause for up to 10 hours more than once and come back to play without a hitch. Still, I'm glad they added the in tournament save in GT4. So, ya, I'm very happy with my PS2 as I'm sure I will be with my PS3.

I think the main problem with buyers of Playstation products, is the modifications they make to the consoles, I will admit, I've modded 2 PS1's which died in roughly a year of modding the consoles, yet my moms PS1 still lives today without a modchip, the same applies to PS2.

    To All:
If you purchase PS3 I would advise not to get a modchip fitted, that way the system will last you until next gen and beyond.

    44 - Mods
    BillGatesSucks 12.06.2005 02:55
The mod thing makes sense. I have a Dreamcast and although I didn't mod it, I've used a mod type program on it that allows me to run imported games. And after I started using it, my Dreamcast was never the same. I guess I should have noticed when I saw the little disclaimer written in small print at the bottom of the cover of the mod program that said the company could not be held responsible for the damage using the product could cause. Bastards.

I modded 2 of my ps2 and both broke down in a year
and i know it was because of the modding
i will tell you not to mod because my not modded 1998 PS1 works fine

Oh yeah well done SONY 100mil units give credit where credits due

sony, please do not rush ps3. don't be idiots like ms. see what they have created. they don't care about the gamers. release in q2006. take the extra time to win the format war. and unleash the cell. people are buying 360s off ebay for stupid money. and some do not work. make it right the first time. and good. make madden look the way it was target rendered. make mgs4 look the way you have presented. do it right.

And just want to say I have both ps and ps2 never had any prob with the consoles. And this is to u guys saying only 90million unites were sold if u do the math thats 10%.Sonys return/faulty system rate was less then 5%.And belive
me sony has sold over 100million PS2 units by now.But if u still belive that 90-95 million units were sold.Think of this Xbox has sold less then 20 million.
Oh yeah and then there was XBox360 listen good it will NEVER EVER sell even close to the PS2 even if MC considers it the next gen console.it will NOT sell
more then 50 million XB360 units world wide and thats 10 years from now.And by
that time the PlayStation3 WILL Have sold from 150-200 million units worldwide.
One last thing PS3 please please Make a HALO killer. KILLZONE Might be one of those Games. If you make a HALO killer Xbox360 won't have anything. Not that it has something now. PS3333333333 FOREVERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
